FIRE IN STREET STORY: Pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with riot police in the northern Italian city of Udine on Tuesday (October 14) during a World Cup qualifier against Israel in which Italy won 3-0. Organisers, Committee for Palestine-Udine, called on soccer's global governing body FIFA to ban Israel from all competitions, saying the team supported "occupation policies" in the Palestinian territories. Demonstrators set up makeshift barricades in the streets and threw metal bars and stones, police deployed water cannons to disperse the crowds. As tear gas canisters were fired, protesters tried to hold their ground behind barricades while waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans. Thick tear gas smoke filled the streets as police in riot gear with reinforced shields advanced to disperse the crowd. Earlier in the day more than 5,000 protesters marched in a demonstration under the slogan "Show Israel the red card". Organisers pressed ahead with the protest even after Israel and militant group Hamas agreed a ceasefire deal that included the release of the remaining living Israeli hostages and the return of Palestinian prisoners. The rally had been mostly peaceful before tensions escalated around kickoff time. Italian media reported at least one journalist was injured during the clashes.
