Both players held serve throughout the first set without either getting a look at a break point opportunity. The subsequent tiebreak was equally contested with both saving two set points before Cilic finally wrapped it up on his third chance at the set to win 7-6(9). Cilic ultimately created the only break point opportunity at 5-5, which he converted to go up 6-5 before serving out the match to win in an hour and 50 minutes.
