MEDVEDEV WALKING BACK TO THE PLAYER’S SEAT AND SITTING DOWN STORY: Daniil Medvedev overcame severe cramps and a determined Learner Tien to secure a gruelling 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 6-4 victory in the ATP Shanghai Masters on Wednesday (October 8), marking his first career win over the left-handed American. A moment during his medical timeout caught everyone's attention when the Russian was heard asking for a ball girl to help remove his shirt while he was being attended to by the ATP physio. Struggling with cramps, the 29-year-old failed in his attempt to remove his sweaty shirt on his own. The ATP supervisor Gerry Armstrong helped him out of his shirt. While he was being treated for the cramps, he engaged in a rant with the chair umpire on the time violations imposed on him during the match. Medvedev went on to win 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals. In a week marred by retirements due to heat and exhaustion the 29-year-old refused to join the list of casualties despite visibly struggling during the latter stages of the second set. Limping in the 12th game of the second set, the Russian was forced to take a medical time-out, with the ATP physio attending to him courtside. The tie-breaker decided the fate of the second set, which Tien claimed 7-1 after Medvedev had earlier won the opening set in a closely contested breaker. Despite the physical toll and spirited resistance from the 19-year-old Tien, Medvedev rallied to take the decider, sealing the match after nearly three hours on court. Speaking after the match, Medvedev acknowledged the challenge posed by both his opponent and his own physical condition, saying he was lucky to come through such a crazy match. The victory sets up a quarterfinal clash between Medvedev and Australia's Alex de Minaur, as the world number 18 continues his pursuit of the Shanghai title. (Production: Bhagya Ayyavoo)
