EXTERIOR OF FIFA HEADQUARTERS STORY: FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the most senior officials of world soccer's governing body held a meeting in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday (October 2). Among items up for discussion at FIFA Council was a proposal by South American football federation Conmebol to expand the 2030 tournament to 64 teams, although no formal decision is expected on that for some time. Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will co-host the tournament with Spain, Portugal and Morocco, but will only hold three games between them as a nod to the 100th anniversary of the initial tournament, which took place in Uruguay. Next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico will have 48 teams for the first time. There are concerns that increasing the number of teams to 64 will dilute the quality of what is on offer. Logistics for 2026 were also under discussion on Thursday. Meanwhile, there has been media speculation in the last week that UEFA , Europe's governing body, could hold a vote to expel Israel. However UEFA have not confirmed such a vote was ever proposed. On Wednesday (October 1) FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani said soccer's governing would leave any such decision to UEFA. (Production: Iain Axon)
