FIREWORKS OVER STADIUM (SLOW-MOTION) STORY: Inter Miami paid tribute to Jordi Alba on Saturday (October 11) after their final home match of the regular season, as the defender plans to retire once the season comes to a close. Stepping out with his wife, Romarey Ventura, and their three kids, Alba thanked the fans, the club and his teammates for welcoming him to South Florida, where he has played since 2023. “(To) my wife, and my three kids. Thank you for the support you’ve given me throughout my career. Usually, us players are the protagonists, but we have amazing people behind us, and in my case, I could not be prouder of the four of you. “And I want to thank all the Inter Miami fans for the support you’ve given me from the first day I got here. Especially my teammates, everyone who works at the club, and those who are behind the scenes, who are just as important as the players,” Alba said to fans at Chase Stadium following their 4-0 win over Atlanta in which Alba scored a goal and assisted Lionel Messi for another. Miami will play their final match of the regular season away to Nashville next Saturday (October 18). The playoffs will begin with wild-card matches on October 22. Alba had signed a contract extension in May to stay at the South Florida club through the end of the 2027 season, but he said after thinking on it, he thought the time was right to pack things up. The former Spain defender began his youth career at Barcelona, who released him for being too small, but was re-signed in 2012 from Valencia for 14 million euros ($16.34 million) and went on to spend 11 seasons at the Catalan club. He joined Inter Miami in 2023, linking up with former teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez, while another former Barca colleague, Javier Mascherano, is the current head coach. The 36-year-old retired from international football in 2023 after making 93 appearances for Spain and was part of the Euro 2012 winning team where he scored in the 4-0 victory over Italy in the final. Alba won six LaLiga titles at Barcelona, and the Champions League along with the Club World Cup and five Copa del Rey. In the U.S. he won the Leagues Cup and Supporters' Shield, and will bow out in November after the MLS playoffs. (Production: Kurt Michael Hall)
