In a week marred by retirements due to heat and exhaustion the 29-year-old refused to join the list of casualties despite visibly struggling during the latter stages of the second set. Limping in the 12th game of the second set, the Russian was forced to take a medical time-out, with the ATP physio attending to him courtside. The tie-breaker decided the fate of the second set, which Tien claimed 7-1 after Medvedev had earlier won the opening set in a closely contested breaker. Despite the physical toll and spirited resistance from the 19-year-old Tien, Medvedev rallied to take the decider, sealing the match after nearly three hours on court. Speaking after the match, Medvedev acknowledged the challenge posed by both his opponent and his own physical condition, saying he was lucky to come through such a crazy match.
