ZHANG ACKNOWLEDGING CROWD  STORY: Naomi Osaka rallied to defeat Leylah Fernandez 4-6 7-5 6-3 on Tuesday (October 7), advancing to the second round of the Wuhan Open after her first return to the Chinese city since 2017. Fernandez, who famously ousted Osaka at the 2021 U.S. Open, converted a breakpoint in the opening set and showcased consistent serving. However, Osaka intensified her service return pressure in a second set marked by five breaks and ultimately overcame the 2021 finalist in the deciding set. Earlier, Emma Raducanu retired from her first-round match against Ann Li while trailing 6-1 4-1, citing dizziness. The British world No. 30 appeared affected by temperatures exceeding 30°C.  In other action, Zhang Shuai delivered a home-crowd victory, upsetting 13th seed Emma Navarro of the United States in a tightly contested 6-2 2-6 6-3 match.
