The British former US Open winner lost to 219th ranked Zhu 3-6 6-4 6-1, and took two medical timeouts during the match, following a retirement in her last outing in the Wuhan Open earlier this month. Zhu will face 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the Round of 16 on Wednesday (October 15), after the tournament's top seed was given a bye in the first round. Elsewhere, Czech Karolina Muchova eased to victory against compatriot Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets, 6-4 6-3, to set up a Round of 16 tie with seventh seed Diana Shnaider. 29-year-old Muchova made the semi-final stage in this competition last year.
