PLAYERS SHAKING HANDS WITH UMPIRE, PAOLINI ACKNOWLEDGING CROWD STORY: Iga Swiatek booked her spot in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open on Thursday (October 9) with a 7-6(2) 6-4 win over 13th seed Belinda Bencic. The six-time Grand Slam winner did not have it all her way though against former world number four Bencic who has been steadily rising back up the WTA rankings. Since giving birth in 2024, Bencic has lifted silverware in Abu Dhabi this season and reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon before losing to Swiatek. At the WTA 1000 event in Wuhan, the Polish world number two saw her serve broken twice in the first as Bencic bounced back from a 0-3 deficit to put herself in a position to serve for the set at 5-4. Swiatek then forced a tiebreak which she comfortably won 7-2 before breaking the Swiss 28-year-old twice in the second set to lock up a last eight tie against Jasmine Paolini. For her part, the seventh seed Italian advanced after her opponent, 10th Dane Clara Tauson, retired with a leg injury trailing 3-6 6-1 3-1. Third seed Coco Gauff, meanwhile, raced past home hopeful Zhang Shuai in just an hour to become the fifth former champion at the WTA 1000 level in the Wuhan quarters. Despite seeing her serve broken once in each set by the Chinese wild card 15 years her senior, Gauff won 60% of all points to maintain her perfect record against Zhang. The reigning French Open winner faces Germany's Laura Siegemund next. (Production: Suramya Kaushik, Conal Quinn)
