WINNERS BEING CROWNED STORY: The world's top conker players battled it out on Sunday (October 14) for the title of King and Queen of the World Conker Championships in the English village of Southwick. More than 250 competitors from across the UK gathered for the competition, which attracted attention last year after a rogue “metal conker” scandal briefly rocked the event. This year saw the tournament introduce airport security style checks with metal detectors to prevent any metal conkers from entering the competition. Matt Cross a civil servant from Kettering was crowned this year’s men’s champion. Speaking after his win, Cross said his technique was to “give it everything”. “You’ve got to give it some welly, the bruises on the hand have really shown that," he added. The women’s winner was Margaret Blake from Corby, wo said she couldn’t believe she had won. “Never thought I would get this far. It’s like crazy,” she said.
