Udine ramps up security ahead of Italy-Israel World Cup qualifier

SECURITY MEASURES AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE STADIUM STORY: Security measures were tightened in Northern Italy's Udine on Tuesday (October 14) ahead of the national team's World Cup qualifier match against Israel. Security forces including bomb disposal units were deployed outside the Blue Energy stadium as well as near the hotels where the Israeli team and officials are staying. Italy's ANSA news agency reported that only 9200 fans will attend the match and the stadium will not be full to capacity due to security measures.  A pro-Palestinian march will go ahead later on Tuesday in the city centre against the Israeli team playing in the World Cup qualifiers. The event takes place a day after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan came into effect. Israel are third in Group 1 on nine points, Italy are second on 12, meaning a win would be crucial to keep Israel's hope of reaching next year's tournament hosted in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
