(Reuters) -Huntington Bancshares reported a rise in its third-quarter profit on Friday, as the regional U.S. lender benefited from increased interest income and fees across all divisions. Shares of the Columbus, Ohio-based bank rose 1.8% in premarket trading. The results come amid renewed scrutiny of U.S. banks' credit quality after two auto-industry bankruptcies and revelations of credit fraud, which have dragged lender stocks lower in recent weeks. Provision for credit losses was $122 million for the three months ended September 30, up from $106 million a year earlier. Its net interest income – the difference between what a bank earns as interest on loans and pays out on deposits – jumped 11% to $1.51 billion during the period, reflecting lower funding costs. The Federal Reserve cut interest rates last month for the first time this year, providing lenders and borrowers relief on the cost of capital. Huntington's results mirror those of peers Citizens and PNC Financial, whose profits also jumped on higher interest income. Noninterest income climbed 20% from a year ago, led by a 21% jump in capital markets and advisory fees as dealmaking made a triumphant comeback during the quarter that saw markets achieve multiple record highs. Customer deposit and loan fees rose 19% to $102 million, benefiting from higher loan commitment fees. Net income attributable to the bank rose to $629 million, or 41 cents per share, from $517 million, or 33 cents per share, a year earlier. Europe's automakers, who employ millions across the continent, are struggling to keep up with foreign technology development, particularly by China and the United States. "There's so much on EVs but we've lost the plot on autonomous driving," Markus Villig, CEO of the European rival of U.S.-based Uber, told a small group of journalists. "It will be the core technology." Autonomous driving is dominated by U.S. companies such as Alphabet subsidiary Waymo and Tesla, and Chinese competitors Baidu, WeRide and Pony.ai. Waymo plans to launch autonomous ride-hailing in London next year. Bolt stands to gain from the launch of "robotaxis", but Villig said the European Union should recognise this as a strategic technology, with security implications, and not just rely on imports. Villig, who was due to meet EU technology chief Henna Virkkunen on Friday, said the EU was spending tens of billions of euros on various parts of the EV supply chain, but nothing comparable on self-driving software. Traditional carmakers might provide some investment, but did not look set to build their own self-driving systems. The EU is keen to enhance its digital sovereignty, by reducing Europe's reliance on U.S. Big Tech in cloud and network services and artificial intelligence. By Svea Herbst-Bayliss NEW YORK (Reuters) -Six Flags Entertainment is adding an executive from activist hedge fund Sachem Head Capital Management to its board at a time the theme park operator is facing pressure from several investors to perform better. The company said on Friday that it appointed Sachem Head partner Jonathan Brudnick to the board, expanding the board size by one to 13. At the end of the year, when two directors retire, the board will have 11 members. He will also join the nominating and corporate governance committee. Six Flags, which has a market capitalization of roughly $2.1 billion, saw its shares lose half of their value this year when rainy weather at the start of the summer kept visitors away from its parks. The stock price closed at $21.26 on Thursday and has lost 55.5% since January. Sachem Head owns nearly 10% of the company and began establishing its position in the second quarter. The sagging share price has also attracted other investors who have been pushing the company to make changes to lift its stock price. Last month activist investor Land & Buildings, which owns a 2% stake in the company, again urged the company to spin out its real estate into a real estate investment trust that its fund manager, Jonathan Litt, thinks could trade at higher multiples. The hedge fund first floated the idea of selling off the real estate in late 2022. Six Flags Entertainment was created last year when Six Flags merged with Cedar Fair. For Sachem Head this is the second board seat the firm has scored in the last four weeks after Performance Food Group invited Sachem Head founder Scott Ferguson onto its board shortly after the firm had said it wanted four seats, including one for Ferguson. (Reuters) -Meta said on Friday it will let parents disable their teens' private chats with AI characters, adding another measure to make its social media platforms safe for minors after fierce criticism over the behavior of its flirty chatbots. Earlier this week, the company said its AI experiences for teens will be guided by the PG-13 movie rating system, as it looks to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content. U.S. regulators have stepped up scrutiny of AI companies over the potential negative impacts of chatbots. In August, Reuters reported how Meta's AI rules allowed provocative conversations with minors. The new tools, detailed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, will debut on Instagram early next year, in the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, according to a blog post. Meta said parents will also be able to block specific AI characters and see broad topics their teens discuss with chatbots and Meta's AI assistant, without turning off AI access entirely. Its AI assistant will remain available with age-appropriate defaults even if parents disable teens' one‑on‑one chats with AI characters, Meta said. The supervision features are built on protections already applied to teen accounts, the company said, adding that it uses AI signals to place suspected teens into protection even if they say they are adults. A report in September showed that many safety features Meta has implemented on Instagram over the years do not work well or exist. Meta said its AI characters are designed not to engage in age-inappropriate discussions about self-harm, suicide or disordered eating with teens. Last month, OpenAI rolled out parental controls for ChatGPT on the web and mobile, following a lawsuit by the parents of a teen who died by suicide after the startup's chatbot allegedly coached him on methods of self-harm. (Reuters) -Indian engineering firm Tata Technologies reported a 5% rise in second-quarter profit on Friday, as growth in its non-automotive business cushioned weakness in its key auto-focused segment. The firm, which provides engineering, product design and manufacturing digitalisation services to automotive clients, as well as to aerospace and industrial machinery firms, warned about near-term demand being tepid. Engineering research and development firms like Tata Technologies, which depend heavily on outsourcing work from U.S. and European clients, have been under pressure as automotive clients cut back on investments and R&D spending reeling from the impact of U.S. tariffs, according to analysts. Revenue from its bigger services segment, which makes up 77% of overall revenue, remained flat. Revenue in its smaller technology solutions segment — which provides digital engineering, upskilling solutions, and enterprise IT services — rose 6.6% during the quarter. Their overall revenue rose 2% to 13.23 billion rupees ($150.3 million) in the three months to September end. The company, which counts Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors among its largest clients, said its consolidated net profit rose to 1.66 billion rupees from 1.57 billion rupees a year earlier. "While we may see some short-term, tactical challenges in Q3, we remain confident in a solid rebound in Q4, supported by a robust pipeline, improving demand trends, and continued operational excellence," CEO Warren Harris said in a statement.
