By Nicole Jao NEW YORK (Reuters) -Oil prices gained about 1% on Monday after the OPEC+ production increase planned for November was more modest than expected, tempering some concerns about supply additions, though a soft outlook for demand is likely to cap near-term gains. Brent crude futures settled 94 cents, or 1.46%, higher at $65.47 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $61.69, up 81 cents, or 1.33%. "The market feel that the actual amount of oil that is going to hit the market is far less than what they announced, given that some of the OPEC+ members are already producing at capacity," said Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates. On Sunday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, plus Russia and some smaller producers, said it would raise production from November by 137,000 barrels per day, matching October's figure, amid persistent concern over a looming supply glut. In the run-up to the meeting, sources said although Russia was advocating for an increase of 137,000 bpd to avoid pressuring prices, Saudi Arabia would have preferred double, triple or even four times that to quickly regain market share. The modest production update also comes at a time of rising Venezuelan exports, the resumption of Kurdish oil flows via Turkey, and the presence of unsold Middle Eastern barrels for November loading, PVM Oil Associates analyst Tamas Varga said. Saudi Arabia kept unchanged the official selling price for the Arab Light crude it sells to Asia. While refining sources in Asia surveyed by Reuters had expected a slight increase, those expectations diminished as concerns about rising Middle Eastern crude supply felled the premium to a 22-month low last week. [CRU/M] In the near term, some analysts expect the refinery maintenance season starting soon in the Middle East will help to cap prices. [REF/OUT] The Kirishi oil refinery, one of Russia's largest, halted its most productive crude unit following a drone attack and subsequent fire on October 4, with its recovery expected to take about a month, two industry sources said on Monday. Expectations of weak demand fundamentals in the fourth quarter are another factor limiting the market's upside. U.S. crude oil, gasoline and distillate inventories rose more than expected in the week ended September 26 as refining activity and demand softened, the Energy Information Administration said last week. "If we see a steadier rise in production then the downside in oil prices may be contained. Much now depends on whether the U.S. economy can reaccelerate over the rest of 2025 and into 2026, which would help demand immensely," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG Group. By Dawn Chmielewski and Helen Coster LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has named Bari Weiss editor-in-chief of CBS News, the news division of U.S. broadcaster CBS, as part of a deal to acquire the online news site she founded, The Free Press. The appointment is seen as Ellison's bet that Weiss, a successful entrepreneur and outsider with billionaire connections, can modernize and turn around the powerful but third-placed broadcast news network. The companies did not disclose the deal value in Monday's announcement. A source familiar with the matter said it was for $150 million. In an essay announcing the transaction on Monday, Weiss, 41, said the deal provides "a chance to help reshape a storied media organization—to help guide CBS News into a future that honors those great values that underpin The Free Press and the best of American journalism." Ellison, the son of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, took over the CBS network and other Paramount properties earlier this year when his company Skydance Media merged with Paramount Global in a $8.4 billion deal. He helped secure regulatory approval for the deal with the promise that the CBS network would reflect "a diversity of viewpoints from across the political and ideological spectrum." Monday's announcement capped months of talks between Ellison and Weiss. The newly minted media baron first floated the idea at July's Allen & Co conference in Sun Valley, a frequent staging ground for major media mergers, according to media reports. Weiss previously worked in the opinion sections of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, describing herself as the most right-wing person at the Times and the most politically progressive at the Journal. Defying easy characterization, she has been critical of diversity initiatives, defended gay marriage, supported reproductive rights, and described herself as proudly pro-Israel. She resigned as opinion writer for the Times in July 2020, in a 1,500-word open letter in which she said she had been the subject of "constant bullying" by colleagues who disagreed with her views. She went on to launch an independent media company, The Free Press, which she began as a newsletter in 2021. FROM NEW YORK TIMES TO START-UP, AND BACK TO LEGACY MEDIA In 2022, she wrote that The Free Press was founded on a credo of "honesty, doggedness, and fierce independence." In a letter to Paramount employees on Monday, Ellison wrote that the company is a steward of one of the world's most iconic news organizations. “We are challenging ourselves to do better – recognizing that we have the ability to reach a broad audience and demonstrate constructive, respectful, and bipartisan dialogue in our own work,” he wrote. Weiss “brings a passion for reaching broad audiences through rigorous, fact-based reporting and a relentless commitment to amplifying voices from all corners of the spectrum,” he wrote. In a letter to CBS News employees, Weiss said that CBS was part of her family tradition. "Whenever I hear that tick, tick, tick or that trumpet fanfare, it sends me right back to our den in Pittsburgh," Weiss wrote in the letter seen by Reuters. "The opportunity to build on that legacy with you — and to renew it in an era that so desperately needs it — is an extraordinary privilege." Weiss said she wanted to hear from the staff at CBS News about what was working and what was not, with the goal of making CBS News the most-trusted news organization in America. She promised to listen with "an open mind, a fresh notebook and an urgent deadline." The clock is ticking for the traditional nightly newscast, whose audience is dwindling in an era of instant access to information online and on social media. The "CBS Evening News" show attracts an average of nearly 3.8 million viewers, fewer than its broadcast rivals, according to the most recent Nielsen data. "Bari Weiss runs a small passionate team that truly understands how to build a brand and engage their followers," said LightShed Partners media analyst Richard Greenfield. "CBS News outside of '60 Minutes' does not mean much to the average consumer in 2025. (It) will be fascinating to see if and how Bari can change that." FREE PRESS CHALLENGES CONVENTIONAL NARRATIVES The Free Press has earned a reputation for challenging conventional narratives. Notable articles include a first-person essay from a then-senior editor at NPR, who accused the public radio network of liberal bias that cost it listeners' trust. Another offered a whistleblower account of the Washington University Transgender Center at the St. Louis Children's Hospital, which reported vulnerable teenagers with mental health problems rushed into life-altering treatments. In a 2023 essay in Tablet magazine, Weiss argued for the dismantling of institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, writing that the movement "threatens not just Jews— but America itself." The reaction to her hiring has been mixed. Judy Marie Muller, a former correspondent for CBS and ABC News, and a professor emerita of journalism at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, called Weiss’ appointment a “sad shift.” "We can say what we want coming in — yes, let's stick to these high standards — and then we'll just see what happens," said Muller. "I think we have to watch what she does, not what she says." Weiss had never been a reporter and had "zero news experience," said Nikole Hannah-Jones, a reporter covering racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine. Weiss will report directly to David Ellison and help set an editorial course for CBS News. The Free Press, which has about 1.5 million subscribers including 170,000 paying members, will remain independent, retaining its brand and operations, and will continue to publish, the companies said. Prior to the Paramount-Skydance deal being cleared, Paramount paid $16 million to settle a 2024 lawsuit filed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The Federal Communications Commission has said the settlement and regulatory review were unrelated. International dollar bonds rose between 0.7 and 2.5 cents each across maturities, continuing the volatile trend of the past few weeks, and remain far from historic highs set in January and revisited in late June. Sovereign bonds in the local market rose an average of 1.2%, driven by portfolio restructuring in the face of speculative buying, traders said. The interbank peso fell 0.35% to 1,429.5 per dollar and the S&P Merval stock index ticked up 0.3%. Economy Minister Luis Caputo has been in Washington for several days, according to his office, to negotiate with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent a multimillion-dollar currency swap to boost investor confidence. So far, no developments have been announced and it is unclear whether he has met with Bessent or with International Monetary Fund officials. U.S. President Donald Trump will also meet with Milei on October 14, during the week that the World Bank and the IMF will convene in Washington. "The market is waiting for more than just signals; more details about the loan or program are needed to calm tensions and guarantee the financial program regardless of the election outcome," said economist Roberto Geretto of AdCap, a consulting group in Buenos Aires. On Sunday, the leading candidate on the midterms ticket for Milei's party in the Buenos Aires province resigned, after facing public scrutiny for ties to a businessman under investigation in the U.S. for drug trafficking. Milei has been in political hot water for weeks, with his popularity falling amid a corruption scandal that ensnared his sister and confidante, and a public tired of the government's austerity measures. In another setback last week, Argentina's opposition-controlled Senate voted to override Milei's vetoes of bills boosting funding for public universities and pediatric healthcare. Spot gold was up 1.8% at $3,956.19 per ounce as of 02:41 pm ET (1841 GMT), after hitting a high of $3,969.91 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures for December delivery settled 1.7% higher at $3,976.3 per ounce. Political developments in France, rising Japanese yields amid inflation concerns and the ongoing U.S. government shutdown are all contributing to gold's rally, said Marex analyst Edward Meir. France's new Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu and his government resigned on Monday, hours after taking office, deepening the country’s political crisis. Meanwhile, the U.S. government shutdown entered its sixth day, with the White House threatening mass federal worker layoffs. Gold has climbed 50% so far this year in a record run underpinned by expectations of Fed rate cuts, sustained central bank purchases, resilient safe-haven demand and broad dollar weakness. Spot gold prices broke the $3,000/oz level for the first time in March and $3,800 in late September. "The fact that we're so close to $4,000/oz also suggests that some of the funds might be trying to push it up to get to that mark," Meir added. NEW YORK (Reuters) -Bitcoin hit a new record high on Monday as the world's largest cryptocurrency by market value continued to benefit from strong investor demand. The rally since the start of the year has been fueled by institutional investors, friendlier policies under U.S. President Donald Trump, and a bitcoin's increasing connection with global financial systems. Bitcoin rose as high as $125,835.92 after climbing above $125,000 for the first time on Sunday. It was last up 2.02% at $125,253.63, on course for the second straight session of gains. It has risen more than 33% this year. "Bitcoin is the hurdle rate. If you can't beat it, you have to buy it. And I think the next 12 weeks are going to be very fun for bitcoin holders," wrote Anthony Pompliano, founder and CEO of Professional Capital Management, in a letter to investors on Monday. Bitcoin's ascent has coincided with the weakness of the U.S. dollar against major peers as Trump's tariffs on U.S. trade partners and uncertainty about their impact have prompted investors to diversify away from U.S. assets. Patients receiving the drug, nimacimab, lost 1.26% of their body weight, when adjusted for placebo rates, lower than the company's expectations of a 5% to 8% reduction. Skye has been banking on nimacimab, a weekly subcutaneous injection, to fuel growth after the company stopped developing its eye disease drug candidate following its failure in a mid-stage study last year. Nimacimab is designed to block the CB1 protein that aids in breaking down stored fat and regulating appetite-related hormones, which can help in sustained weight reduction without loss of muscle. "While we are still intrigued by Skye's targeting approach of CB1, the bottom line is we aren't convinced yet from the data reported today," Cantor analyst Kristen Kluska said, adding that it will remain a "show me story" if higher doses can lead to enough weight loss to be competitive. Skye said no neuropsychiatric issues historically associated with this class of drugs were observed with nimacimab in the study. "We have a solution on addressing the safety concern that's kind of plagued the mechanism up until now," CEO Punit Dhillon told Reuters. The 136-patient study also tested nimacimab in combination with Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, which showed that patients who took the combination lost 13.2% of their body weight on average, compared with 10.25% for those on Wegovy alone after 26 weeks. The combination also helped patients preserve more lean mass compared with semaglutide alone, it said. Roughly a dozen companies, including Eli Lilly and smaller rival Scholar Rock are testing treatments that target proteins tied to muscle preservation or growth. These treatments, being tested in combination with Novo and Lilly's drugs, could generate more than $30 billion in sales by 2035.
