* Russell wins from pole for Mercedes * Verstappen second to cut gap to Piastri in title race * McLarens clash on first corner but win constructors' title (Adds more detail, quotes) By Nick Mulvenney SINGAPORE, Oct 5 (Reuters) – George Russell drove a flawless race from pole position to win the Singapore Grand Prix for Mercedes on Sunday, leaving Red Bull's world champion Max Verstappen and the two McLarens to fight it out for the other podium spots. Briton Russell took the chequered flag under the lights of the Marina Bay street circuit 5.4 seconds clear of Verstappen to claim his second victory of the season. "It feels amazing," said Russell. "We don't really know where this performance came from, but really, really happy. "I was really nervous at the beginning when I saw Max on the soft (tyres), but that first stint was great from us." Lando Norris put pressure on Verstappen towards the end of the race but had to settle for third ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, the pair earning enough points to seal a second consecutive constructors' title for McLaren. "It was a tough race," said Norris. "Max didn't make any mistakes. I gave it my all today, and got close. "I'm happy with today. I got forward two positions. We won as a team, the constructors' once again." Piastri's lead over Briton Norris in the drivers' standings was cut to 22 points, while Verstappen is 63 points behind the Australian with six races remaining in the season. "I think second was the maximum result today," said Verstappen. "I think the whole race was quite difficult, more difficult than I hope for, for a lot of different reasons." The celebrations for the constructors' title in the McLaren garage might be muted, however, with Piastri fuming at the way Norris forced his way past his teammate on the opening corner. Kimi Antonelli was a distant fifth in the other Mercedes with Charles Leclerc sixth ahead of his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso was eighth for Aston Martin, while Haas driver Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz, who started at the back of the grid after the Williams cars were disqualified from qualifying, took the final points in ninth and 10th. "IT'S RACING" Russell got away to a clean start from pole with Verstappen behind him but Norris, who started fifth, clipped the back of the Dutchman's Red Bull as he forced his way up the inside of Piastri on the first corner. Norris sustained some damage to the front end of his car and Piastri expressed his discontent on the team radio at his teammate's manoeuvre, accusing the Briton of "barging him out of the way". "It's racing, I put it on the inside, I had a small correction, but nothing more than that, it was good racing," Norris said. The stewards gave the incident the all clear and McLaren said they would look at it after the race with Piastri again railing at what he said was the unfairness of the decision. "I thought that in the moment, obviously first lap, tensions are high," said Piastri. "We're obviously encouraged to share our views on what happened, and I did that, and I'm sure we'll discuss it more." Verstappen was the first of the leaders to pit and tore around the track to ensure Norris would not be able to undercut him when the Briton changed his tyres seven laps later. Norris asserted his right as McLaren's lead driver to pit ahead of Piastri, whose discontent with the team would not have been improved by a notably slower stop than his teammate. Verstappen was 3.5 seconds behind Russell at the halfway stage and ended the race clinging on to keep second place from Norris rather than chasing a third straight race win. By Olesya Astakhova, Ahmad Ghaddar and Alex Lawler LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) -OPEC+ will raise oil output from November by 137,000 barrels per day (bpd), it said on Sunday, opting for the same fairly modest monthly increase as in October amid persistent worries over a looming supply glut. The group comprising the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus Russia and some smaller producers has increased its oil output targets by more than 2.7 million bpd this year, equating to about 2.5% of global demand. The shift in policy after years of cuts is designed to regain market share from rivals such as U.S. shale producers. SUPPLY GLUT SEEN IN FOURTH QUARTER Brent prices fell below $65 per barrel on Friday, as most analysts predict a supply glut in the fourth quarter and in 2026 due to slower demand and rising U.S. supply. Prices are trading below this year's peaks of $82 per barrel but above $60 per barrel seen in May. In the run-up to the meeting, Russia and Saudi Arabia, the two biggest producers in the OPEC+ group, had different views, sources have said. Russia was advocating for a modest output increase, the same as in October, to avoid pressuring oil prices and because it would struggle to raise output owing to sanctions over its war in Ukraine, two sources said this week. Saudi Arabia would have preferred double, triple or even quadruple that figure – 274,000 bpd, 411,000 bpd or 548,000 bpd respectively – because it has spare capacity and wants to regain market share more quickly, sources said ahead of the meeting. OPEC views the global economic outlook as steady and market fundamentals as healthy because of low oil inventories, it said in a statement on Sunday. WALKING A TIGHTROPE Scott Shelton at TP ICAP Group said oil prices may rise on Monday by up to $1 per barrel as the November production increase turned out to be modest. Jorge Leon at Rystad Energy said: "OPEC+ stepped carefully after witnessing how nervous the market had become … The group is walking a tightrope between maintaining stability and clawing back market share in a surplus environmen." OPEC+ output cuts had peaked in March, amounting to 5.85 million bpd in total. The cuts were made up of three elements: voluntary cuts of 2.2 million bpd, 1.65 million bpd by eight members and a further 2 million bpd by the whole group. The eight producers plan to fully unwind one element of those cuts – 2.2 million bpd – by the end of September. For October, they started removing the second layer of 1.65 million bpd with the increase of 137,000 bpd. The eight producers will meet again on Nov. 2. * McLaren secure their 10th constructors' title * Won with six rounds to spare * Second in a row for Woking-based team * Now ahead of Williams on all-time list, second only to Ferrari By Alan Baldwin Oct 5 (Reuters) – McLaren's 10th Formula One constructors' title, secured under the Singapore floodlights on Sunday with a record-equalling six rounds to spare, looked very different to last year's triumph even if success tasted as sweet as ever. The 2024 title was a breakthrough, the team back on top for the first time since 1998 after a battle with Ferrari down to the wire in Abu Dhabi, and then partying with the delighted owners in Bahrain. In the end only 14 points separated the top two and there was every expectation Ferrari would be back with a real challenge in 2025. That did not happen. McLaren have enjoyed a dominant season, even if their supremacy has tailed off more recently with development focused on 2026, with their title defence boosted by 12 wins in the first 15 races and seven one-two finishes. It was the first time McLaren had defended a constructors' title since 1991. A FOREGONE CONCLUSION FROM EARLY ON "Last year, the championship came as a surprise, much earlier than expected in terms of the trajectory of the team," commented principal Andrea Stella of champions who have climbed back from ninth place in 2017. "Only in Miami (round six in May) we could take the first victory… and at the end, it was a great surprise and a great joy. "This year, we realized relatively soon that the car was very competitive, that we were in condition to win races. So it was more about keeping the concentration, keeping the focus, maximising the potential available." Going into Singapore McLaren were 333 points clear of closest rivals Mercedes, needing only 13 points to win a title that has looked a foregone conclusion from very early on. "Their car is definitely capable of winning every race, and their car should win every race," Mercedes' George Russell had declared back in March with the season barely started. The crown could have been secured in Azerbaijan with seven rounds to go, one earlier than Red Bull's dominant 2023 season in which they won 21 times in 22 races, but Oscar Piastri crashed and Lando Norris finished seventh. That rare setback merely delayed the inevitable, and Sunday's floodlit race around Marina Bay ended the last shred of a doubt with Norris finishing third and Piastri fourth. Unlike last year, when Red Bull's Max Verstappen won a fourth drivers' title in a row, McLaren now look set to go on and win both crowns for the first time since 1998 when Mika Hakkinen was champion. They last won a drivers' title with Lewis Hamilton in 2008, but Ferrari — who now have the Briton racing for them — took the constructors' crown then. "You obviously need the best car. I think we've had that for 95% of the races," said Norris before the Singapore action started. "I think there are plenty of other teams with two great drivers, but I kind of hate saying it, not ones who have delivered every weekend as often as Oscar and myself have done. "It's also easier for us to deliver because we're ahead of the field a lot of the time. So in some ways, we have an easier job than some others. "But as a constructor, you need two drivers who deliver every weekend, who finish most races. And that's what we've been able to do." McLaren hit the ground running with their 2025 car looking even quicker than last year's, Norris chalking up the team's 200th F1 win in Hungary in August. Stability has helped too, with Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari all having to adjust to changed lineups — and a new boss at Verstappen's team — while McLaren stayed the same. Had Piastri not run wide in the opening race in Melbourne, won by Norris after a one-two in qualifying, McLaren might have wrapped up the title already. As it is, they move clear of Williams as the second most successful constructor of all time — behind only Ferrari with their 16 team titles — and still the team to beat as the sport enters a new engine era in 2026.
