By Rishika Sadam (Reuters) -Eli Lilly will invest more than $1 billion in India in the coming years to boost manufacturing and supply through local drugmakers, the company said on Monday, as it seeks to tap into skilled workforce to bolster its global manufacturing expansion. The collaborations aim to increase the availability of Lilly's key drugs, including those for obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer's, cancer and autoimmune conditions, the company said. "We are making significant investments to increase manufacturing and medicine supply capacity around the world," Patrik Jonsson, president of Lilly International, said, adding, India is a hub for capability building within its global network. The company, which launched its blockbuster weight-loss drug Mounjaro in India this year, currently does not operate its own manufacturing facility in the country, which hosts several firms that develop and manufacture complex drugs, vials, injectables for larger pharmaceuticals on a contract basis. "Lilly is actively engaging with contract manufacturers in India," the company told Reuters, but did not divulge any further details. Lilly's investment plans in India come at a time when global drugmakers are rushing to bolster U.S. manufacturing capacity after the Trump administration imposed a 100% tariff on imported branded and patented drugs from October 1. Last month, Lilly announced a $5 billion investment in a new facility in Virginia, part of a $27 billion expansion plan to build four new U.S. plants over the next five years. Meanwhile, the India launch of Mounjaro, alongside Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, has increased patient awareness of obesity treatments in a country projected to have the world's second-largest obese population by 2050. Sales of both drugs doubled within months of their launch. Lilly is also preparing for increased competition from India's generic drugmakers, who are racing to launch cheaper versions of Wegovy once its main chemical ingredient, semaglutide, goes off patent next year. Separately, Lilly is setting up a manufacturing and quality facility in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad to expand its presence beyond the city's global capability center. The new hub will oversee the firm's contract manufacturing network across India and provide technical capabilities. Recruitment for the new site "will begin immediately", Lilly said, with plans to hire engineers, chemists, analytical scientists, quality control and assurance experts and managers. TOKYO (Reuters) -Toyota Motor said on Monday that its tender offer for forklift maker Toyota Industries was now likely to begin in February or later, pushing back a launch that had been expected in early December. The Toyota group said in June that Toyota Industries would be taken private through a holding company into which Toyota Motor, Toyota Fudosan and Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda would invest, and that the tender offer would start after receiving regulatory approval. The value of the tender offer for the shares of Toyota Industries is expected to be around 3.7 trillion yen ($24.65 billion) based on an acquisition price of 16,300 yen a share. The deal marks a landmark unwinding of cross-shareholdings that is expected to boost the influence of the founding Toyoda family. Japanese businesses have come under growing pressure in recent years to reduce such shareholdings amid a government push for improved corporate governance. As part of the deal, Toyota Motor and group companies Denso, Toyota Tsusho and Aisin will all sell their shares in Toyota Industries and acquire their own shares now held by it, with the purchase of Toyota Motor's holdings expected to come to one trillion yen. PARIS (Reuters) -Talks between Airbus, Thales and Leonardo to create a major new European satellite manufacturer have hit a roadblock after existing partners Thales and Leonardo asked for more time, French daily La Tribune reported. Airbus and the other two companies, which own Airbus' main competitor in satellite production, Thales Alenia Space, have been in talks for months to create a new European venture to compete more effectively with Elon Musk's SpaceX. La Tribune reported that talks accelerated last week but hit a last-minute hurdle over the relative workshare to be granted to the three companies. A spokesperson for Airbus said: "Talks with our partners continue and are confidential in nature; it is too early to comment further." By Rocky Swift and Junko Fujita TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese shares surged to a record high on Monday, while the yen and long-term bonds tumbled as Sanae Takaichi was all but confirmed to become the country's next premier, stoking bets on a revival in big spending and loose monetary policy. The Nikkei 225 Index soared 4.75% to close at 47,944.76. It traded as high as 48,150.04, breaking through three psychologically key thousand-point barriers for the first time ever. The broader Topix gauge jumped 3.1%. The 30-year Japanese government bond (JGB) plunged, sending the yield to a record high. Meanwhile, the yield on the two-year note slid, reflecting expectations of later rate hikes by the Bank of Japan. The yen tumbled nearly 2% against the dollar and traded at an all-time low versus the euro. Takaichi was considered to have the most expansionist fiscal and monetary agenda among five candidates in the Liberal Democratic Party race to replace hawkish Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. "The Nikkei was on course to reach as high as 48,000 by year-end, but because Takaichi was chosen as the LDP leader, it shot up toward that level already," said Hitoshi Asaoka, the chief strategist at Asset Management One. "The market welcomes her spending policy, but whether she can achieve that goal is not certain, as the LDP is still a minority party. The Nikkei may retreat once before year-end." NEW POLICY DYNAMICS Takaichi began eyeing cabinet posts on Monday, with media reporting she planned to install former defence minister Minoru Kihara as chief cabinet secretary and bring back ex-foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi as the country's top diplomat. Her pick for finance minister, which will be closely watched by investors, was unclear. In the lead-up to the LDP race, a "Takaichi trade" emerged – long on stocks and bearish on Japanese government bonds, particularly longer maturities – positioning for a win by the veteran lawmaker who is a devotee of the "Abenomics" stimulus policies of the late Shinzo Abe. Yields on two-, five-, and 10-year JGBs had all reached levels not seen since the financial crisis in 2008 in the run up to the LDP election on bets the BOJ could raise rates as early as this month's meeting. Long-term JGB yields had fallen, flattening the so-called yield curve. In a run-off vote on Saturday, Takaichi beat farm minister Shinjiro Koizumi, who was seen as more laissez-faire on monetary policy. "The market had bet that Koizumi would win, and they were positioned for curve flattening," said Miki Den, the senior Japan rate strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities. "But because the bet on Koizumi was so strong, it will take time to unwind the flattening positions." The yen sank 1.8% to 150.13 yen versus the dollar and weakened to 176.22 against the euro, an all-time low. The yen swaps market on Monday indicated a 41% likelihood of a rate hike by December, down from 68% on Friday. As a candidate, Takaichi proposed boosting investment in strategic business sectors, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, nuclear fusion and defence. Shares in those sectors were among the biggest gainers in Tokyo trading. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a major military contractor, jumped 11%, and Japan Steel Works, a supplier of nuclear energy machinery, soared more than 15%.  Yields on long-term debt face upward pressure on expectations Takaichi will push for more deficit spending, adding to concerns about Japan's creditworthiness. The yield on the 40-year JGB, the longest tenor, soared 12.5 basis points to 3.505%. The 30-year yield briefly reached 3.29%, an all-time high. An auction of 30-year JGBs on Tuesday will be closely watched for signs of concerns about Japan's finances and debt management under Takaichi. Despite a modest issuance amount, the debt sale "is expected to be weak because investors —wary of higher term-premia after Ms. Takaichi's ascent and possible fiscal stimulus— are reluctant to add long-duration risk," Shoki Omori, the chief desk strategist at Mizuho Securities, wrote in a note. After her LDP victory, Takaichi told a press conference the government and central bank must work closely to ensure Japan's economy achieves demand-driven inflation backed by rising wages and corporate profits. By Gianluca Lo Nostro (Reuters) -Shares of Tefal pan manufacturer SEB plunged more than 22% on Monday after it cut its annual profit and sales forecast, saying business has been slower than expected in Europe and a "wait and see" attitude among U.S. consumers and business clients has significantly impacted the company. SEB, which also makes Rowenta irons and Krups coffee machines, slashed its annual operating profit forecast to between 550 million euros and 600 million euros ($702.90 million), from 700 million to 750 million euros ($878.63 million) previously. Consumers in the euro zone have reduced their spending on non-essentials, according to a European Central Bank survey published in September. Consumer confidence in France has also dropped to its lowest level in nearly two years. SEB said sales growth in 2025 will be stable to slightly positive, having previously forecast growth of between 2% and 4%.  Better sales in Asia and South America and successful recent product launches are not sufficient to offset the negative trends in Europe and the U.S., the company said in a statement. Western Europe accounted for 35% of SEB's consumer sales in 2024. SEB's shares were down 22.7% in early Paris trading. The stock gained during the pandemic as lockdowns drove a surge in home cooking but has since fallen back. It has lost around 25% of its value since the start of this year. The French group expects a "slight" decline in third-quarter sales, set to be reported on October 23. The company had already lowered its annual sales growth forecast in July, but said at the time that it expected a rebound in the second half of the year despite U.S. tariffs on imports creating uncertainty over consumer demand. In a nine-second video posted on social media platform X, the Elon Musk-led automaker showed a vehicle with its headlights illuminated in a dark setting. The company hinted at an event scheduled for Tuesday in a separate video that had "10/7" at the end. Tesla has previously delayed rolling out a lower-cost version of the Model Y in the United States. (Reuters) -Luxury carmaker Aston Martin warned on Monday of a full-year loss that would be bigger than market consensus, citing softer volumes and economic pressures stemming from tariffs and a newly implemented quota system. The British carmaker now expects its 2025 total wholesale volumes to fall by mid-high single digit percentage from last year's 6,030 units. At the low end, analysts had expected Aston Martin to log an operating loss of 110 million pounds ($147.83 million), according to estimates compiled by the company.
