SEOUL (Reuters) -Samsung Electronics on Tuesday projected a 32% rise in third-quarter operating profit from a year earlier, beating analysts' estimates as demand for conventional memory chips helped offset the company's weaker high bandwidth memory chip sales. The world's largest memory chipmaker estimated an operating profit of 12.1 trillion won for the July-September period, versus a 10.1 trillion won LSEG SmartEstimate. Revenue would likely rise 8.7% to 86 trillion won from a year earlier, the filing showed. Samsung is expected to release detailed results including a breakdown of earnings for each of its businesses later this month. (Reuters) -Rio Tinto reported a 6% sequential rise in third-quarter iron ore shipments on Tuesday, despite planned major maintenance activities and infrastructure works which will continue in the fourth quarter.  The world's biggest iron ore producer shipped 84.3 million tonnes (Mt) of the steel-making commodity from its Pilbara operations in the three months ended September 30, compared with 79.9 Mt shipped in the previous quarter. (Reuters) -Oil tanker operator DHT Holdings said on Monday that its fleet does not fall under the scope of China's new special port fees targeting U.S.-linked vessels. China has imposed fees on U.S. ships that visit its ports, effective October 14, as a countermeasure to U.S. port fees on China-linked ships. China's move targets U.S. built, flagged and operated ships, as well as companies with 25% or more of their shares or board seats held by U.S.-domiciled investment funds. DHT said "each vessel in the company's fleet is directly owned by a non-U.S. entity, was built in a non-U.S. jurisdiction, does not fly the U.S. flag and is operated from management companies in Monaco, Norway, Singapore and India." Additionally, U.S. nationals only represent 20% of the composition of the company's board, it said. DHT added that it was not aware of U.S. shareholders or reporting groups that control over 25% or more of DHT's shares or voting rights. (Corrects name spelling in sixth paragraph) By Francesco Canepa and Howard Schneider FRANKFURT/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. companies and consumers are bearing the brunt of the country's new import tariffs, early indications show, contradicting assertions by President Donald Trump and complicating the Federal Reserve's fight against inflation. Trump famously predicted that foreign countries would pay the price of his protectionist policies, wagering that exporters would absorb that cost just to keep a foothold in the world's largest consumer market. But academic studies, surveys and comments from businesses show that through the first months of Trump's new trade regime it is U.S. companies that are footing the bill and passing on some of it to the consumer – with more price hikes likely. "Most of the cost seems to be borne by U.S. firms," Harvard University professor Alberto Cavallo said in an interview to discuss his findings. "We have seen a gradual pass-through to consumer prices and there's a clear upward pressure." A White House spokesperson said "Americans may face a transition period from tariffs" but the cost would "ultimately be borne by foreign exporters." Companies were diversifying supply chains and bringing production to the United States, the spokesperson added. WHO IS EATING THE TARIFFS? Cavallo and researchers Paola Llamas and Franco Vazquez have been tracking the price of 359,148 goods, from carpets to coffee, at major online and brick-and-mortar retailers in the United States. They found that imported goods have become 4% more expensive since Trump started imposing tariffs in early March, while the price of domestic products rose by 2%. The biggest increases for imports were seen in goods that the United States cannot produce domestically, such as coffee, or that come from highly penalised countries, like Turkey. These price hikes, while material, have been generally far smaller than the tariff rate on the products in question – implying that sellers were absorbing some of the cost as well. Yet U.S. import prices, which don't include tariffs, showed foreign exporters have been raising their prices in dollars and passing on to their U.S. buyers part of the greenback's depreciation against their currencies. "This suggests foreign producers are not absorbing much if any of the U.S. tariffs, consistent with prior economic research," researchers at Yale University's Budget Lab think-tank said in a blog post. National indices of export prices paint the same picture. The cost of goods exported by China, Germany, Mexico, Turkey and India have all risen, with Japan the only exception.   FULL IMPACT OF TARIFFS YET TO BE FELT Adapting to Trump's tariffs – a still-incomplete set of levies that pushed import taxes from an average of around 2% to an estimated 17% – is still underway. It is seen taking months longer as exporters, importers and consumers jostle over who pays duties worth round $30 billion per month. "We shouldn't expect this to be a one-time jump but rather firms are trying to find ways to soften the blow," and stretch price increases out over time, Cavallo added. European carmakers have looked – so far – to absorb more of the price impact, but consumer firms including Tide detergent-maker Procter & Gamble, Ray Ban-maker EssilorLuxottica and Swiss watchmaker Swatch have hiked prices. Around 72% of companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa tracked by Reuters flagged price hikes since Trump's trade salvoes started, a Reuters tracker shows. Only 18 companies have warned on profit margins. Separate Reuters analyses of e-commerce websites Shein and Amazon were already showing robust price increases for Chinese products sold in the United States, ranging from clothing to electronics. China's so-called "anti-involution" policy, under which producers are encouraged to scale back competition and even cut capacity in key sectors, could add fuel to the fire by curbing the supply of goods such as solar-power equipment. That has all set the scene for higher inflation in the United States. The Fed cut its benchmark rate last month on concerns the job market was weakening but policymakers are split over whether or not tariff-driven inflation will likely fade. The Fed's newest governor, Stephen Miran, on leave from the Trump administration, argues the tariffs are not inflationary and has brushed off concerns about what he called "relatively small changes in some goods prices." A Boston Fed "back of the envelope" calculation projected tariffs would push up core inflation by 75 basis points. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said tariffs accounted for perhaps 30-40 basis points of the latest core inflation reading of 2.9% but the effect should be "relatively short-lived." The Peterson Institute for International Economics estimated that inflation over the next year would be 1 percentage point higher than if tariffs hadn't been raised but would then fall back. GLOBAL TRADE SEEN SUFFERING AS TARIFFS BITE The rest of the world, however, has no reason to celebrate. As U.S. consumers struggle to keep up with rising prices, demand for exports is likely to slow. An S&P Global survey of purchasing managers at companies all over the world showed new export orders contracting at an increasing pace since June. European Union exports to the United States fell by 4.4% from the prior year in July, the latest month for which data was available, and in the bloc's former powerhouse Germany they were down 20.1% in August. The World Trade Organization, too, slashed its forecast for global merchandise trade volume growth next year to just 0.5%, citing a delayed impact from U.S. tariffs. U.S. shipment data tracked by German think tank the Kiel Institute also showed a clear downtrend. While that all may partly reflect strong front-loading of orders earlier in the year in anticipation of tariffs, it is also prompting caution about the trade outlook. Dutch bank ING expected a 17% reduction in EU goods exports to the U.S. over the next two years, costing the bloc 30 basis points of GDP growth. "The expected impact of U.S. tariffs hasn’t materialized yet," Ruben Dewitte, an economist at ING, said. "We anticipate these effects will become more visible in the coming months." Market participants said the crypto sector on Friday saw more than $19 billion in liquidations across leveraged positions as panic selling and low liquidity triggered sharp swings. The plunge came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced late on Friday a 100% tariff on Chinese imports and threatened export controls on critical software.  Crypto analysts said this was the largest wipeout in a 24-hour period in the market's history, nine times larger than the February 2025 crash and 19 times bigger than the March 2020 meltdown and the FTX collapse in November 2022. Bitcoin fell as low as $104,782.88 during the October 10-11 period, down more than 14% from its high of $122,574.46 on Friday. It was last up 0.6% at $115,718.13. The world's largest cryptocurrency hit a record high above $126,000 on October 6. Ether, the second biggest digital currency, dropped 12.2% to a low of $3,436.29 on Friday. It last changed hands at $4,254, up 2.4% on the day.  Altcoins took an even bigger hit as HYPE (-54%), DOGE (-62%), and AVAX (-70%) all experienced steep drawdowns before recovering to post more modest losses. Trump over the weekend softened his rhetoric on China, however, noting that "it will all be fine" and the U.S. did not want to "hurt" China. That helped the crypto recovery. China on Sunday blamed the U.S. for the escalation, but did not roll out further countermeasures. "Last Friday, you saw volatility just jump across the board, not only for short-dated, but also for long-dated maturities. The sentiment around short-dated volatility is that more people are worried about downward turns," said Sean Dawson, head of research at Derive.xyz in Canberra. Data from Derive.xyz, a crypto options trading platform, showed heavy "put" buying from traders in bitcoin and ether, which suggested hedging against potential downside risks. In bitcoin, there were hefty purchases of puts conferring the right to sell bitcoin at strike prices of $115,000 and $95,000 for the October 31 expiry, according to Dawson. There was also a sharp reversal from call buying to call selling at the $125,000 strike for the October 17 expiry, suggesting a bearish short-term view.  Calls in the options market reflect expectations that the price will increase. For ether, Nick Forster, Derive.xyz co-founder, said traders focused on the $4,000 strike for the October 31 expiry and $3,600 strike for the October 17 expiry. He also noted substantial buying of $2,600 puts for the December 26 expiry. Those strikes, he said, are indicative of growing bearish sentiment through year-end. Despite the meltdown, Willy Woo, a leading onchain crypto analyst with more than a million followers on X, noted that bitcoin investor flows have been holding up well and may be the reason it fared better than expected against a sharp decline in stocks. In contrast, Woo said he saw a large drop in ether flows while Solana continued a decline. He believes that capital in altcoins is likely rotating into bitcoin rather than leaving the system. Altcoins, also known as alternative coins, refer to cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin, which are often treated as high-risk, high-reward investments. Some altcoins deliver massive returns, but many fail or lose liquidity. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is widely viewed as a "blue-chip" crypto asset, widely-held by institutions. NEW YORK (Reuters) -Goldman Sachs has agreed to buy Industry Ventures, a leading venture capital firm that manages $7 billion of assets, in a bid to expand its services to technology entrepreneurs, it said on Monday. Industry Ventures has one of the largest portfolios of venture capital partnerships from the seed stage to late-stage growth stage in the United States. Goldman Sachs will pay $665 million in cash and equity at closing, plus an additional $300 million based on Industry Ventures' performance through 2030, it said in a statement. "Industry Ventures pioneered venture secondary investing and early-stage hybrid funds, areas that are rapidly expanding as companies stay private longer and investors seek new forms of liquidity," said Goldman's CEO David Solomon in a statement. All 45 employees of the firm will join Goldman Sachs. Industry Ventures' founder and CEO Hans Swildens, along with senior managing directors Justin Burden and Roland Reynolds, will become partners within Goldman Sachs Asset Management, it said. By Georgina McCartney HOUSTON (Reuters) -Front-month U.S. crude oil futures ended Monday's trading at their smallest premium since January 2024 over the seventh-month contract, as OPEC+ ramps up supply while seasonal refinery maintenance in the U.S. pressures demand for prompt barrels.  Narrowing backwardation, the market term for immediate deliveries fetching a premium over later deliveries, suggests investors are making less money selling their oil in the spot market because near-term supply is perceived to be ample. A reversal of the spread from a premium to a discount would put U.S. oil futures in a contango for the first time since last January. WTI crude futures for November delivery settled at $59.49 per barrel on Monday, while the May 2026 contract settled at $59.02 per barrel, creating a 47 cent premium for prompt barrels, the narrowest since January 16 last year.  "This narrowing is indicative of excess supplies in the near term, and then concerns that when demand increases in the future, supplies will get tighter again," said Andrew Lipow, president of consultancy Lipow Oil Associates.  "We are seeing increased supply from OPEC+, which combined with reports of more oil in floating storage is putting pressure on the front end of the curve, as well as seasonal refinery maintenance in the U.S.," Lipow added. OPEC+, made up of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, has increased its oil output targets by more than 2.7 million barrels per day this year, equating to about 2.5% of global demand, stoking supply glut concerns.  This is flattening the WTI curve as the market is now pricing in less tightness in early 2026 balances, Shohruh Zukhritdinov, a Dubai-based oil trader said.  Meanwhile, U.S. refinery utilization on a four-week average fell for the fourth straight week to 92.5% in the week to October 3, to its lowest since the first week of June, considered the start of the U.S. summer driving season, according to the Energy Information Administration.  "Physical builds and refinery slowdowns equate to less need to pay up for prompt barrels," Zukhritdinov said.
