By Sinéad Carew and Dhara Ranasinghe NEW YORK/ LONDON (Reuters) -MSCI's global equities gauge regained some ground on Monday after Friday's steep sell-off as U.S. President Donald Trump softened his tone on the U.S.-China trade war, but safe-haven gold hit fresh record highs in a sign that uncertainty remained high. On Friday Trump had threatened 100% tariffs on China from November 1 in response to China's curbs on exports of rare earth elements. During the weekend, Beijing defended its move as a response to U.S. aggression, but stopped short of imposing new levies on U.S. products. So by Sunday, the U.S. President sounded more conciliatory posting on social media that the U.S. did not want to "hurt" China.  "Friday was a big sell off and today it's a big rally. The Friday sell off was all about Trump threatening 100% tariffs on China. Today Trump is backing away from that," said Tim Ghriskey,  senior portfolio strategist at Ingalls & Snyder in New York. "It was a fear trade on Friday and an elation trade today." On Wall Street at 10:45 a.m. (1445 GMT) the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 480.23 points, or 1.06%, to 45,960.52, the S&P 500 rose 86.35 points, or 1.31%, to 6,638.49 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 397.43 points, or 1.78%, to 22,599.34.  MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe  rose 7.15 points, or 0.74%, to 979.40. Ghriskey noted that there were still some signs of skepticism in the market as equity indexes have not erased all of Friday's losses and investors were still buying gold. "Gold is the fear trade. Even with Trump backing away from the 100% tariffs on China there is fear out there and gold is traditionally the place to hide," he said. Also, BofA commodities analysts said in a note on Monday that they had raised their forecast for gold to $5,000 an ounce for next year from $4,400.  Spot gold rose 2% to $4,097.57 an ounce. U.S. gold futures rose 2.89% to $4,090.80 an ounce. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.33% although France remained in the spotlight with reappointed prime minister Sebastien Lecornu facing pressure to get a budget deal across the line. In currencies, the dollar index , which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, rose 0.26% to 99.31. The euro was down 0.47% at $1.1563  while against the Japanese yen , the dollar strengthened 0.85% to 152.43. Japanese markets have had their own problems with the ascension of new LDP leader Sanae Takaichi to prime minister now in doubt, contributing to a sharp rebound in the yen and a 5% dive in Nikkei futures on Friday. Japan's Nikkei was closed on Monday for a holiday. For Monday's Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday, U.S. bond markets are closed.  Oil prices rose on Monday after hitting five-month lows on Friday, as investors focused on potential talks between the US and Chinese presidents that could ease a trade war between the world's two largest economies. [O/R] U.S. crude rose 1.77% to $59.92 a barrel and Brent rose to $63.71 per barrel, up 1.56% on the day. In the week ahead, investors will be monitoring the earnings season kick-off with major U.S. banks reporting, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup. S&P 500 companies overall are expected to have increased earnings by 8.8% in the third quarter from a year earlier, according to LSEG IBES, and strong results will be needed to justify the market's high valuations. By Saeed Azhar NEW YORK (Reuters) -Goldman Sachs has lost more than a dozen senior investment bankers this year, a higher number than normal, after internal shake-ups and a sluggish start to 2025 drove them to seek new opportunities, according to three sources familiar with the situation. Some bankers left because they expected to be passed over for promotions this year, including to Goldman's elite partner class, while others exited because they expected meager bonuses after dealmaking stalled in the first half, according to two of the sources familiar with the situation who declined to be identified while discussing personnel matters. The scale of departures is being reported by Reuters for the first time. Despite the departures, Goldman still tops Wall Street's league tables for mergers and acquisitions, and its fee volumes have also surged close to levels seen in 2021. Its broader investment banking net revenue in the nine months of the year rose to the highest level since 2021, according to data from Dealogic. The bankers who departed this year joined rivals including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup, while others joined boutiques like Evercore. "We always look to run our firm in service of our clients and shareholders," a bank spokesperson said in a statement. "Goldman Sachs succeeds because of our exceptional teams and strength of our franchise." The bank will announce new partners in 2026. In 2024, it appointed 95 new partners, including 26 women, which became effective earlier this year. It advised Electronic Arts on its $55 billion sale to a consortium of private equity firms and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund this year, and also advised Holcim on the spinoff of its North American business Amrize, now valued at $26 billion. "There have been fewer deals overall, but larger in size, requiring less headcount," said Stephen Biggar, a banking analyst at Argus Research. Megadeals across the industry jumped to $1.26 trillion in global mergers and acquisitions during the third quarter, up 40% year over year, according to Dealogic data. But 8,912 deals were signed, down 16% from last year, the worst third-quarter performance for deal volume in 20 years, according to the data. The surge in investment banking has also boosted Goldman's shares, which are up nearly 38% this year, outperforming the S&P 500 Financials index's 11% rise. LEADERSHIP CHANGES Goldman made major leadership changes this year, introducing co-heads across its major divisions and adding six new members to its management committee. The firm also created a new financing division. The Wall Street giant also pulled forward annual staffing cuts to the second quarter this year from September. The exercise typically targets a headcount reduction of 3% to 5% based on performance. Headcount fell 2% to 45,900 employees in the second quarter versus the first, according to a company filing. "The expectation for the bigger M&A environment has been in place for some time," said Macrae Sykes, a portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds. "As such, I believe that Goldman Sachs is well prepared to take advantage of the tailwinds given their franchise and broad-based banking capabilities. Headcount may fluctuate, but not, in my opinion, the productiveness of the firm's banking culture." By Maggie Fick LONDON (Reuters) -AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot looked relaxed standing in the Oval Office on Friday as U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a medicine deal that will lower drug prices for millions of Americans. The hard work had paid off, allowing Soriot to clinch the first agreement for a non-U.S. drugmaker and shield his Anglo-Swedish company from threatened steep tariffs on imports to the U.S. – the world's largest pharmaceuticals market. That moment at the White House was the culmination of public and private meetings between Soriot and Trump officials, stretching back to November last year when Trump won election, three sources close to the negotiations told Reuters. And it went down to the wire with a last-minute push from AstraZeneca to seal the agreement. "You've kept me up at night and my team as well. But it's been really worth it," Soriot joked to Trump.  ASTRAZENECA CEO MET TRUMP AT ROYAL BANQUET The agreement will likely bolster the 66-year-old French-born Australian's reputation as something of a Trump whisperer, even as many CEOs globally grapple with the president's whipsaw tariff changes. Trump argues Americans pay far too much – often three times more, studies show – for prescription medicines than in other wealthy nations and set a September 29 deadline for drugmakers to cut prices, using threats of tariffs up to 100% as leverage.  Soriot's charm offensive started the week after Trump won the U.S. election. On November 12, AstraZeneca announced a $3.5 billion plan to expand manufacturing and research in the United States. Soriot, who arrived in the U.S. early last week, most recently met Trump at a September 18 royal banquet dinner at Windsor Castle in Britain, the first source said.  Over the summer he met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick at least three times in Britain and the United States, that source added. All three sources asked not to be named as the talks were confidential. Soriot also developed a close relationship with vocal Trump ally and Republican high-flier, Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, all three sources said. That led to a rapidly-assembled deal for a $4.5 billion plant in the state, which took just over a month to go from initial talks to an agreement. On Thursday, a day before the Oval Office signing, Soriot and Youngkin stood shoulder-to-shoulder, shovels in hand, to break ground at the site. "Youngkin has a lot of ambition and his connections with the administration were clearly helpful," a second source said. "The Virginia facility deal showed the two sides were on the same page." ASTRAZENECA: A 'VERY AMERICAN COMPANY' Following the agreement and a deal a week earlier by U.S. peer Pfizer that boosted global healthcare stocks, Wall Street now expects more companies to reach similar agreements with the Trump administration in the coming weeks.  Shore Capital analyst Sean Conroy said that Soriot, who publicly backed Trump on drug pricing and called AstraZeneca a "very American company", secured a seat at the table in Washington with smart strategic announcements.  "That rhetoric has clearly resonated with the Trump administration and its agenda around Most Favored Nation drug pricing," Conroy said, referring to the lowest price paid in other wealthy countries after fees and rebates. SOME CONCESSIONS, BUT A WIN FOR ASTRAZENECA Analysts had estimated that AstraZeneca was less exposed to U.S. tariffs than many other major drugmakers, having already established substantial manufacturing capacity in the United States. But tougher regulation and more price pressure in the UK, where many drugmakers have criticised the government for not doing enough to support the sector, gave AstraZeneca a strong business argument for the U.S. deal.  Britain accounts for a small percentage of the company's revenues but is where it is headquartered and primarily listed. AstraZeneca is the largest listed firm on London's FTSE 100 Index. In contrast to Britain, U.S. officials are in the midst of an aggressive push to spur investment from firms like AstraZeneca and put in ample energy and effort to assist them, the first source said. In July, AstraZeneca announced a sprawling $50 billion investment plan for the U.S. market and in late September said it would do a full U.S. listing of its shares alongside its current London listing. By the time Pfizer signed its deal on September 30, AstraZeneca was already nearing its own finalised agreement, the three sources said.  Soriot headed to the U.S. early last week even as the last details were being ironed out. Each day a deal looked close but didn't arrive. The Virginia plant agreement solidified goodwill between the company and the Trump administration, which ultimately helped push the deal over the line, the third source said.  In the end, while AstraZeneca made concessions on some drug prices for Medicaid and pledged to produce more medicines locally, its U.S. arrangement marks a win for the company.  It gives more clarity, analysts say, without significantly denting expected revenues, which AstraZeneca is aggressively forecasting at $80 billion by 2030, with half of that coming from increased sales in the United States.  "Friday's deal is the last piece in the puzzle," the third source added. (Reuters) -Salesforce said on Monday it would invest $15 billion in San Francisco over the next five years to accelerate AI adoption, as the cloud software provider looks to sharpen its competitive edge against tech giants. Founded in San Francisco in 1999 and still headquartered there, Salesforce has been integrating AI into its products, including workplace messaging platform Slack, as it jostles with companies such as ServiceNow, Oracle and Microsoft to win businesses eager to adopt the booming technology. Salesforce said the latest investment would support a new AI incubator hub on its San Francisco campus and help companies adopt AI agents, which can perform tasks on behalf of the users. "This $15 billion investment reflects our deep commitment to our hometown — advancing AI innovation, creating jobs and helping companies and our communities thrive," CEO Marc Benioff said in a statement. The announcement comes ahead of the company's Dreamforce conference, scheduled to take place between October 14 and October 16 in San Francisco. The annual conference is expected to draw nearly 50,000 attendees and generate $130 million in local revenue, Salesforce said. The company, which has more than 76,000 employees globally, last week announced plans to spend $1 billion in Mexico over the next five years. It began operating in Mexico in 2006. Salesforce shares were up nearly 1% in morning trading. They have fallen around 28% so far this year. Earlier in the day, the company also launched its "Agentforce 360" AI platform globally. The company forecast third-quarter revenue below Wall Street estimates in September. It had also announced a $20 billion increase to its existing share buyback program at the time. Aiding sentiment, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business Network on Monday that Trump was on track to meet his Chinese counterpart in South Korea as the two sides de-escalate tensions over trade disputes. Tensions flared up last week after China expanded its rare earth export controls. In response, Trump on Friday said he would impose an additional 100% tariff on China's U.S.-bound exports, along with new export controls on critical U.S.-made software. The revived trade tensions sent the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq to suffer their steepest weekly declines in months. However, in a more conciliatory tone over the weekend, Trump posted that "it will all be fine" and the U.S. did not want to "hurt" China. China on Sunday blamed the U.S. for the escalation but did not roll out further countermeasures. "The combination of earnings, Israel and the peace and that some sort of deal will be eventually ironed out with China in terms of trade should be a cushion for the market," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities. In the Middle East, Hamas handed over the first group of the last surviving Israeli hostages, a key step in ending two years of devastating conflict in Gaza as part of a ceasefire deal pushed by Trump. At 10:00 a.m. the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 517.17 points, or 1.14%, to 45,996.77, the S&P 500 gained 99.81 points, or 1.52%, to 6,652.32 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 455.47 points, or 2.05%, to 22,659.90 The S&P 500 tech sector added 2.5%. Nvidia rose 3%, while Broadcom gained 9.1%. Broadcom rose to top the benchmark index after partnering with OpenAI to produce the startup's first in-house artificial intelligence processors. The gains helped the broader semiconductor index rise 4.4% and also boosted the tech-heavy Nasdaq. Financials rose 0.9% on the benchmark index. Consumer staples declined 0.4%. Consumer discretionary stocks added 1.4%, with Tesla up 2.6%. Among other stocks, JPMorgan advanced 2.5% after unveiling a $1.5 trillion strategic investment plan. By David Lawder WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Finance chiefs gathering in Washington this week were ready to discuss the global economy's surprising resilience in the face of Donald Trump's tariff assaults – until U.S.-China trade war rhetoric reignited with the U.S. president threatening 100% duties on Chinese imports and whipsawing financial markets. The annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank are now certain to be dominated by questions over whether Trump's vow to retaliate against China's dramatically expanded export controls on rare earths will plunge the world's two largest economies back into a full-blown trade war. Trump's said his new tariffs and export curbs would take effect on November 1 and threatened to cancel a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month in South Korea. The duties would shatter a delicate truce crafted by Washington and Beijing over five months that brought tariffs down from triple-digit levels and prompted improved IMF global growth forecasts. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday sought to walk back the threat, telling Fox Business Network that he believed the Trump-Xi meeting would proceed and that there would be U.S.-China staff-level meetings this week on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank gathering. "The 100% tariff does not have to happen," Bessent said. "The relationship, despite this announcement last week, is good. Lines of communication have reopened, so we'll see where it goes." Bessent added that the U.S. would "stand firm" against the new global Chinese rare earths export controls, while Trump said on the Truth Social media site on Sunday: "Don't worry about China, it will all be fine!" VOLATILE MARKETS The softer tone sparked a strong rebound in U.S. stocks at the start of trading in New York on Monday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index up more than 2% and other major indexes up more than 1%. Trump's threat on Friday sparked a big sell-off at a time when investors and top policymakers were already growing anxious about a frothy stock market fueled by an investment boom in artificial intelligence that some officials fear could hurt future employment. The IMF and World Bank meetings will bring more than 10,000 people to Washington, including finance ministers and central bank governors from more than 190 countries. Martin Muehleisen, a former IMF strategy chief who is now with the Atlantic Council, said Trump's threats may be posturing for negotiating leverage, but said they will inject volatility into the week's proceedings. "Let's hope that sanity prevails. If Trump goes back to 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, there's going to be a lot of pain in the markets for him," Muehleisen said. While China has some leverage over Trump due to its global dominance in rare earths, which are essential for tech manufacturing, Muehleisen said it is not in Beijing's interest to plunge back into an environment of triple-digit tariffs. GROWTH FORECASTS HOLD UP Prior to the escalation on Friday, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva had touted the global economy's ability to withstand multiple shocks, from tariff costs and uncertainty to a slowing U.S. job market, rising debt levels and rapid shifts brought on by AI's rapid adoption. In a preview of the IMF's World Economic Outlook forecasts due on Tuesday, Georgieva said last week that the global GDP growth rate for 2025 would be only slightly less than the 3.3% for 2024. Based on tariff rates that were lower than initially feared – including the U.S.-China duties – the IMF in July raised its 2025 GDP growth forecast by two-tenths of a percentage point to 3.0%. "What we are seeing is demonstrable resilience in the world," Georgieva told Reuters in an interview. "But we are also saying it is a time of exceptional uncertainty, and downside risks are still dominating the forecast. So watch it, don't get too comfortable." G7 FOCUS ON RUSSIA  Finance ministers from the Group of Seven industrial democracies are expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss efforts to step up sanctions pressure on Russia that is aimed at ending Moscow's war against Ukraine. A British government source said that finance minister Rachel Reeves wanted to ensure joint action with G7 and European Union countries to cut Russia's energy revenues and access to overseas assets that comply with international law.    Among these options that G7 ministers will discuss is a European Union plan to use Russian frozen sovereign assets to back a loan of 140 billion euros ($162 billion) to Ukraine. BESSENT'S AGENDA FOR INSTITUTIONS The U.S. footprint at the meetings will be large, extending from tariff discussions to Bessent's calls for the IMF and World Bank to pull back from climate and gender issues to focus on their core missions of financial stability and development. The meetings will be the public debut for Dan Katz, the IMF's new No. 2 official. Member countries will be watching to see how Katz, a former investment banker who was Bessent's chief of staff, carries out the U.S. Treasury chief's agenda, which also calls for stronger IMF criticism of China's state-led economic policies. The U.S. Treasury's market intervention on behalf of Argentina, the IMF's largest borrower, also will take prominence at the meetings as Argentina's right-wing libertarian President Javier Milei will join his ally Trump two blocks away at the White House on Tuesday. The move was welcomed by Georgieva to keep Argentina's market-based reforms on track. But Muehleisen, the former IMF official, said the Fund risks being pushed by its largest shareholder to enforce Trump's geopolitical goals – ratcheting up pressure on China and potentially extending more aid to U.S. allies like Argentina without adequate reforms. "Is it really still a global, multilateral organization, or is it becoming a bit more of an appendage of the U.S. Treasury?" he said. BEIJING (Reuters) -Apple's iPhone Air would be available for pre-order in China later this week, as major Chinese telecom operators obtained regulatory approvals for eSIM services, the company said on Monday. The iPhone Air, priced from 7,999 yuan ($1,121.56), will be the only model in China to have service providers' support for an eSIM – a digital SIM embedded in the device. The country's three major telecom companies – China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom – have all been cleared by regulators to provide trial eSIM services, a website affiliated with the industry ministry said on Monday. (Reuters) -Amazon said it plans to hire 250,000 workers for the holiday season across its fulfillment and transportation networks in the U.S., the same number as the last two years, as the e-commerce behemoth prepares for a surge in orders. The announcement on Monday, however, comes amid concerns that U.S. shoppers will be cautious about spending in this holiday season as they brace from the impact of President Donald Trump's tariff policies. Data firm Adobe Analytics last week projected U.S. holiday online sales to grow at a slower pace this year, but e-commerce are still expected to outshine overall sales growth. Trump's latest tariffs on Chinese imports will have limited impact on holiday sales as most of the inventory is already in the country. Amazon will hire full-time and part-time employees at $23 per hour with benefits, while seasonal workers will earn an average wage of over $19 per hour, it said. The company had last month said it is investing more than $1 billion to raise pay and lower healthcare costs for U.S. fulfillment and transportation employees. (Reuters) -The U.S. government shut down much of its operations on October 1 after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach an agreement to extend funding past the end of the federal fiscal year on September 30. The closure has shut off the flow of key economic data at a moment of uncertainty among policymakers and investors about the health of the U.S. job market, the trajectory of inflation and the strength of consumer spending and business investment. The federal agencies responsible for indicators of U.S. economic activity, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis and Census Bureau, have suspended the collection and distribution of nearly all data for the duration the shutdown, although the BLS on Friday said it would publish the Consumer Price Index for September on October 24. The report had been originally scheduled for October 15. Much of the data from private-sector sources, however, will continue to be issued, although some of those series rely in part on earlier government reports and will also cease publication during the shutdown. Following is the forward calendar of economic reports that had been scheduled to be issued in the coming days, noting which releases will be suspended should the shutdown still be in effect and which will continue to be issued. By Rashika Singh (Reuters) -StubHub shares rose nearly 6% in early trading on Monday after a raft of upbeat ratings from brokerages lifted investor sentiment in the ticketing platform following a shaky market debut last month. J.P. Morgan, BofA Global Research and others highlighted the company's leadership in secondary ticketing and its expansion into direct issuance and advertising, as they started coverage after the industry-mandated quiet period ended. "We believe through its well-established, dominant position in the secondary ticketing market, StubHub will be able to establish a formidable entry into the materially larger primary ticketing market," Evercore ISI analysts said. At $20, the shares were trading below its IPO price of $23.50 apiece, indicating investors are not fully convinced about StubHub's ability to grow quickly or better compete with bigger players. Its industry rivals have also struggled in the public market, except Live Nation. StubHub's stock performance contrasts sharply with recent tech IPOs such as Klarna and Figma.  "We believe STUB shares, trading at a discount to peers, offer compelling risk/reward as we expect strong execution in core resale and ads, while direct issuance expectations seem muted," J.P. Morgan analysts said.  Analysts at BMO viewed StubHub as "a secondary ticketing market leader and primary ticketing market disruptor", setting a Street high price target of $30. None of the brokerages that initiated coverage issued a neutral or bearish rating, according to the latest data. StubHub raised nearly $800 million in its U.S. IPO, with proceeds earmarked for reducing its $2.4 billion debt. The listing marked StubHub's return to public markets after multiple delays, following its $4.05 billion acquisition by Viagogo in 2020 and earlier ownership under eBay.  Founded in 2000, StubHub operates a ticketing marketplace in more than 200 countries, enabling buyers to purchase tickets for live events, including sports and music performances.
