By Patricia Reaney (Reuters) -American actress Diane Ladd, a triple Academy Award nominee for her supporting roles in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," "Wild at Heart" and "Rambling Rose," has died at the age of 89, her daughter said on Monday. Ladd died at her home in California, said Laura Dern, Ladd's daughter with ex-husband Bruce Dern. Both Bruce and Laura are also actors. Ladd was known for playing strong, intelligent and complex women in roles including a sassy waitress, a domineering, mentally ill mother and an eccentric 1930s housewife during a seven-decade career that began on stage in the 1950s. The tall blonde starred in films such as "White Lightning" (1973), David Lynch's 1990 crime drama "Wild at Heart" (1990), the black comedy "Citizen Ruth" (1996), "Daddy and Them" (2001) and HBO's "Enlightened" (2011), with her daughter. The two often played mother and daughter. Ladd and Dern were both nominated for an Academy Award for the 1991 drama "Rambling Rose." They were the first, and only, mother-daughter duo to receive Oscar nominations for the same film in the same year. "She is just the greatest actress, ever. You don't even use the word brave because she just shows up like that in life. She doesn't care what anybody thinks," Dern said of her mother. "She leads with a boundarylessness," she added in a 2019 interview with "Inside the Actors Studio." The mother-daughter duo's talents extended beyond acting. In 2023, they published a joint memoir, "Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love." The book was based on their conversations during daily walks together after Ladd was diagnosed with a lung disease and given only months to live. Her doctor recommended the walks to strengthen her lungs. "The more we talked and the deeper and more complicated of subjects we shared, my mother got better and better and better," Dern said in an interview with National Public Radio in 2023. "It's been a great gift." SOUTHERN BELLE Diane Ladd was born Rose Diane Lanier on November 29, 1935, in the small town of Meridian, Mississippi. She was the only child of a country veterinarian and an actress and housewife. From a young age, the precocious child who finished school at 16 knew she wanted to act. "Somehow in my soul, even as a child, I felt I was going to be an actress," Ladd said with a southern lilt in a 2022 talk at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. She was offered a college scholarship but instead opted to try her luck in New York where she worked as a model and Copacabana dancer. She joined the Actor's Studio, which is known for method acting. Ladd made her New York stage debut in 1952 in the off-Broadway production of "Orpheus Descending" by Tennessee Williams, who was her third cousin. It was also where she met her first husband, Bruce Dern. The actress worked in classic 1960s TV dramas such as "Perry Mason," "77 Sunset Strip" and "The Fugitive" before being cast in Roger Corman's 1966 motorcycle saga "The Wild Angels" with her husband Dern, Peter Fonda and Nancy Sinatra. Two years later, Ladd made her Broadway debut in "Carry Me Back to Morningside Heights." She had more than 120 TV and film credits, including Roman Polansky's "Chinatown" (1974) and David O. Russell's 2015 comedy/drama "Joy," and she earned three Emmy nominations in the 1990s for guest roles in "Touched by an Angel," "Grace Under Fire" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman." Ladd also wrote short stories and screenplays, and directed and starred in the 1995 comedy "Mrs. Munck" with Bruce Dern. Ladd, Dern and their daughter Laura were each awarded side-by-side stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a triple ceremony in 2010. "Diane is a Renaissance woman," film producer Barbara Boyle said during the ceremony. "She has uncanny perception and insight into people that informs her acting and directing." In her 2006 memoir "Spiraling Through the School of Life," Ladd wrote about the high and low points of her life, including the death of her first daughter in a tragic accident in 1962 when she was a toddler. Deeply spiritual, Ladd was a proponent of complementary and alternative medicine. After being told she would never be able to have another child, her second daughter, Laura, was born five years later. Ladd was married three times and continued to work into her 80s. "Art is just a mirror, and that's why we go see movies: to learn who we are," she told the New York Times in 2023. (Reuters) -Paramount Skydance said on Monday that comedian Jon Stewart will continue hosting Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" every Monday and serve as executive producer for the series until December next year. The political comedian returned to "The Daily Show" as executive producer and host in February last year. He stepped down in 2015 and was replaced by comedian Trevor Noah. Stewart will continue to host alongside "The Daily Show's" news team, including Ronny Chieng, Josh Johnson and Desi Lydic, who will share hosting from Tuesdays through Thursdays, Paramount said in a statement. The show, which has won 28 Emmy Awards in total since it started airing in 1996, recorded its highest quarterly rating in four years in the third quarter, according to data from Nielsen. Stewart was among the many comedians and celebrities that had rallied to support CBS' "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert after the network canceled his show, with Stewart lashing out at Paramount Global for the decision to end the long-running TV program. By Rich McKay (Reuters) -In a testament to Kim Kardashian's power to grab the spotlight, the head of NASA felt compelled this week to set the record straight when the reality TV queen said she believed a well-worn conspiracy theory that the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing was a fake. In a new episode of Hulu's long-running family saga "The Kardashians," the show's star said she thinks the lunar landing by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin was a fiction.  What convinced her, she said during the segment, was a video she saw online of an Aldrin interview. She said she interpreted his comments in that interview to mean the moon landing never occurred. Since the 1970s, skeptics have floated the notion that the mission – viewed live by tens of millions of people around the world – was actually staged.  That theory has waxed and waned over the years, but Sean Duffy, U.S. Transportation Secretary and NASA's acting administrator, wasted no time in shooting it down after Kardashian told her 4 million viewers that she was embracing the idea.     "Yes, @KimKardashian, we've been to the Moon before … 6 times!" Duffy wrote on Thursday on the X social media platform. In fact, he said, the U.S. was going back to the moon under the leadership of President Donald Trump. In 2026, the Artemis II mission is scheduled to send astronauts on a 10-day trip around the moon, ahead of a planned moon landing in 2027. "We won the last space race and we will win this one too," Duffy wrote. Kardashian referenced a video in which Aldrin, now 95, was asked what was the "scariest moment" during the Apollo mission. Reading from her phone, Kardashian quoted Aldrin as saying: "There was no scary moment, because it didn't happen." The reality star then said: "So I think it didn't happen." Aldrin's remarks appear to have been taken out of context from a 2015 onstage appearance at Britain's Oxford Union debating society. During the event, Aldrin was asked by someone in the audience, "What was the scariest moment of the journey?" He hesitated and said, "The scariest?" throwing up his hands as if to dismiss the notion. "It didn't happen. It could have been scary," he said, suggesting that nothing frightening happened.  Then someone in the audience asked him about a faulty circuit breaker, and he proceeded to describe a technical problem that arose during the mission. A spokesperson for NASA could not immediately be reached to elaborate on the story. A spokesperson for Kardashian did not immediately respond. A spokesperson for Aldrin was not immediately available. By Hanna Rantala LUCCA, Italy (Reuters) -Fans can expect more action and plenty of emotion in the highly-anticipated fifth and final season of "Stranger Things," which will wrap up the Netflix phenomenon after nine years, its creators said on Friday. Speaking at the first global promotional event for season five in the Italian city of Lucca, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer said they were anxious and excited for fans to see the final instalment after working on it for three years. "Bringing it out in the world is nerve-wracking, but we're ready to finally show it," Ross Duffer told Reuters. "The scale of it is bigger … it's more action and more special effects, but it's also by far the most emotional season because it's the end of the story for all of these characters," Matt Duffer added. SHOW BECAME MASSIVE HIT IN 2016 The Duffer brothers were attending the Lucca Comics & Games convention, taking part in a press conference as well as fan Q&A. The first-ever "Stranger Things" episode was also scheduled to screen on the convention's movie section programme. Set in the 1980s in the fictional Indiana town of Hawkins, "Stranger Things" follows a group of young friends battling supernatural horrors from the Upside Down alternate dimension. The Emmy Award-winning show became a massive hit upon its release in 2016, gaining a loyal following around the world and spawning video games, merchandise, cosplay, immersive experiences and a Tony Award-winning play. Starring Winona Ryder and David Harbour, the show catapulted its young cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown who plays a girl called Eleven with psychokinetic powers, into the global spotlight. "You work on something for a decade and we become a family and saying goodbye to it, it's full of emotions, it's not just sad it's just overwhelming in general," actor Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, said. "That last day (on set) was certainly a big one. Certainly lots of tears and giggles and hugs."Season five will be split into three parts, with the first four episodes airing on November 26, the next three on December 25 and the finale on December 31. The last episode will also screen in select cinemas in the United States and Canada. (Reporting by Hanna RantalaEditing by Rod Nickel)

By Dawn Kopecki, Dawn Chmielewski and Amy-Jo Crowley (Reuters) -Netflix is actively exploring a bid for Warner Bros Discovery's studio and streaming business, retaining a financial advisor and gaining access to financial information, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The video streaming service has hired Moelis & Co, the investment bank that advised Skydance Media on its successful bid for Paramount Global, to evaluate a prospective offer, two of the sources said. Netflix also has been granted access to the data room, which contains the financial details needed to make a bid, according to two of the sources familiar with the matter. Warner Bros Discovery and Moelis declined to comment. Netflix could not be reached for comment. Owning Warner Bros' studio business would give Netflix control over some of Hollywood's most successful stories and characters, including the Harry Potter and DC Comics franchises. Warner Bros' prolific television studio also produces many of Netflix's hits, including original series like "Running Point," "You" and "Maid." HBO and its companion streaming service would add more prestige dramas, and subscribers. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos told investors last week that while the company is traditionally "more builders than buyers," it does evaluate acquisitions based on criteria such as the size of the opportunity and whether it would strengthen the company's entertainment offerings. Sarandos indicated Netflix would not be interested in acquiring Warner Bros Discovery's cable television networks, which include CNN, TNT, Food Network and Animal Planet. "We've been very clear in the past that we have no interest in owning legacy media networks," Sarandos said in the company's third-quarter investor video. "There is no change there." Warner Bros Discovery announced last week that it would begin evaluating options, after receiving a trio of unsolicited offers from Paramount Skydance to acquire the entire company. The company said its board would consider whether to move forward with its planned split, which would separate the Warner Bros film and television studios, HBO and the companion HBO Max streaming service from its television business, or pursue a sale of all or parts of the company. Comcast President Mike Cavanagh told investors on Thursday the company is evaluating media assets that would be "complementary" to its existing business. He also appeared to dismiss those who are skeptical of Comcast winning regulatory approval, saying "more things are viable than maybe some of the public commentary that's out there."
