ANKARA (Reuters) -Turkey's 5G spectrum tender drew a total of $2.95 billion in winning bids on Thursday, with the country's major operators Turkcell, Vodafone and Turk Telekom securing key blocks across the 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz frequency ranges. Turkcell placed the highest bid of $429 million for the A1 package in the 700 MHz band and won four blocks in the 3.5 GHz range. Its winning bids totalled $1.22 billion. Turk Telekom secured the A3 package for $425 million and two blocks in the 3.5 GHz range. Its winning bids amounted to $1.1 billion. Vodafone won the A2 package for $426 million and won a single 3.5 GHz block. Its winning bids totalled $627 million. The rollout of 5G services is expected to start in April next year, primarily in major cities. The tender distributed not only 5G frequencies but also extended the usage rights of previous-generation network frequencies until the end of 2042. Turk Telekom, Turkcell and Vodafone were participating in the tender for 5G frequencies with the minimum fee for all packages set at $2.13 billion, excluding VAT. The tender was selling frequencies in the 700 MHz band in three blocks and in the 3.5 GHz band in eight blocks. The operators did not release estimates on network investment ahead of the tender, but analysts expect them to embark on a multi-year, multi-billion dollar process to upgrade their networks to 5G. The previous mobile frequency auction before 5G was held in 2015. Three operators paid 4 billion euros ($4.66 billion), including VAT, for the 4.5G for approximately 15 years. Thursday’s tender also extended the authorisation period for 2G and 3G services, which were to expire in 2029, until the end of 2042. Companies will pay 5% of their annual sales from these services to the Treasury. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said on Wednesday that the first 5G signal will be launched on April 1 and that it will gradually expand nationwide, starting with densely populated cities. He said it could take a little over a year for coverage to expand nationwide. ($1 = 0.8581 euros) (Reporting by Can Sezer; Writing by Daren Butler and Ezgi Erkoyun; Editing by Susan Fenton)

(Reuters) -A breach at U.S.-based cybersecurity company F5 has been blamed on state-backed hackers from China, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Earlier in the day, U.S. government officials said federal networks are being targeted by an unidentified "nation-state cyber threat actor" that's trying to exploit vulnerabilities in products made by F5. F5 and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), when contacted by Reuters, did not confirm whether the breach was carried out by Chinese state-backed hackers. "These same risks extend to any organization using this technology, potentially leading to a catastrophic compromise of critical information systems," CISA Acting Director Madhu Gottumukkala said in a statement, without specifying who was behind the hack. F5, which provides cybersecurity and multi-cloud application services, said on Wednesday it had detected unauthorized access to certain company systems by a threat actor, but the breach did not affect its operations. Representatives for F5 told customers the hackers were in its network for at least 12 months, according to the Bloomberg News report. F5 also sent customers a threat-hunting guide for malware called Brickstorm, which Bloomberg attributed to a Chinese state-backed hacking group, the report said. The report added F5 chief executive officer Francois Locoh-Donou is personally briefing customers about the timeline and the alleged China-linked hackers. British authorities issued an alert urging F5 users to update software. Berlin (dpa) – Everything felt fine at home, but a few minutes into your run, your nose starts to run too? You're not alone – and it's especially common as the weather turns colder. "Most of the time, your nose runs when there has been a large temperature difference to the cold," says Axel Klein, a sports physician. When the body warms up during exercise, the sensitive and well-supplied mucous membranes in the nose swell slightly, producing more fluid – and out it comes. Runners don't need to worry, though. "A runny nose while jogging is nothing serious – you can just let it run," Klein says. "It doesn’t affect your performance." In the winter, athletes can wear a multifunctional scarf over the mouth and nose to reduce the sudden chill. If your nose keeps running even in the spring or summer, Klein recommends getting tested for allergies. Pollen could be to blame for the sneezing and sniffles. (Reuters) -Consumer finance fintech Upgrade said on Thursday it raised $165 million in its latest funding round, nearly four years after its last external financing during the height of the 2021 fintech boom. The round valued Upgrade at $7.3 billion pre-money, according to a source familiar with the matter, a 21.7% premium to its previous valuation. "We're probably 12 to 18 months away from an IPO, so we wanted to give the team members some liquidity before IPO," Upgrade CEO Renaud Laplanche told Reuters in an interview. Fintech startup investment surged in 2021 on low rates and abundant capital, but cooled in subsequent years as inflation soared and the Fed hiked interest rates. A rebound in equities and easing macro concerns have revived initial public offerings, with fintechs returning to market after a years-long slump. Swedish fintech Klarna and neobank Chime have debuted in New York in recent months. The round was led by investment firm Neuberger, which also buys loans from Upgrade. By John Revill ZURICH (Reuters) -Swiss engineering company ABB said it is seeing strong customer demand, particularly from a surge in new data centres being built in the U.S. to process artificial intelligence. ABB, which makes factory robots, as well as motors and drives for factory production lines, also said on Thursday it was seeing little impact on customers from U.S. import tariffs as it reported its third quarter results. The results give an insight into the health of the broader industrial economy, with ABB's products used to electrify and control buildings, mines and factories. New orders in the U.S. jumped 27% during the third quarter. "It's not related to tariffs," said Chief Executive Morten Wierod. "It's the normal standard business where there is strong demand." GROWING DEMAND FOR DATA CENTRES, UNINTERRUPTED POWER ABB generates around 7% of group revenues from data centres, up from 6% a year ago. It provides electrification products, for example uninterruptable power supplies, to keep server rooms online. "The build-out of data centres, of course, is one key driver, but it's also the electrification trends of industries that also puts more pressure on the utility side, so they need to invest, and even in power generation," Wierod told reporters. Data centre-related orders increased by a double digit percentage rate in the third quarter. Earlier this week ABB announced a partnership with chip maker Nvidia to develop the next generation of data centres. ABB said its operating earnings before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITA) rose 12% to $1.74 billion, slightly above analysts forecasts. Revenue rose 11% to $9.08 billion, beating forecasts for $8.88 billion, while orders rose 12%. Its shares rose 2.5% in early trading before paring gains later in the morning. Chief Financial Officer Timo Ihamuotila, who is stepping down next year, said the impact of U.S. import tariffs had been limited to the tens of millions of dollars on operating profit, which ABB was countering with small price increases and efficiency gains. The company currently produces locally around 75-80% of the products it sells in the U.S. and is aiming to reach 90% by investing more in U.S. factories. Berlin (dpa) – Unusual for animals from a biological point of view, female mountain gorillas often live many years after last giving birth – just like people. This may be to care for their young, according to scientists from the University of Turku in Finland and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. They weighed three decades of life history and behavioural data from 25 wild mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, for a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Seven of the females examined lived more than 10 years after their last birth – more than twice as long as the average interval between two births, the researchers found. Six of the animals were older than 35, the highest reproductive age observed in mountain gorillas to date. Wild female gorillas rarely reach the age of 50, so these post-reproductive years, meaning years after fertility, account for at least a quarter of their adult life, the researchers say. How is this possible? There are several possible explanations for why female gorillas continue to live so long without reproducing, even though this does not seem to offer any evolutionary advantage for the species. The grandmother hypothesis assumes that females live longer to help their grandchildren by protecting them or passing on knowledge – a theory also applied to whales and humans. The grandmother effect in humans is probably due to the fact that grandmothers took care of their grandchildren early on in human history, scientists say. Childhood lasts relatively long in humans because the nervous system needs a long time to mature. Under these conditions, the theory is that the chances of survival for offspring were better if grandmothers could care for their grandchildren for as long as possible, relieving their daughters. Grandmother or mother theory? But such intergenerational assistance is unlikely among gorillas, as both females and males often leave their birth groups before they reproduce and thus live with relatives less frequently, according to the researchers. The mother hypothesis seems more likely – in which older females stop reproducing in order to save energy and other resources and instead invest in their existing offspring. Observations show that mothers also play an important role for adult animals and that females that no longer reproduce are often in better physical condition than older, reproducing females. But the scientists also say the long lifespan after reproduction in gorillas may not be a targeted evolutionary trait, but a by-product of longer life expectancy. In the wild, many animals die early, meaning there is no selection against genes that only cause problems in old age. But with animals living longer, thanks to fewer predators or better conditions, such effects become apparent, such as continuing to live long after the end of reproduction.
