By Heekyong Yang SEOUL (Reuters) -Samsung Electronics is expected to post its highest third-quarter profit since 2022, driven by higher memory chip prices supported by server demand as customers rebuild inventories, analysts' estimates showed. The world's biggest maker of memory chips is projected to report an operating profit of 10.1 trillion won ($7.11 billion) for the July-September period, according to LSEG SmartEstimate from 31 analysts, which is weighted toward those who are more consistently accurate. This would be up 10% from a year earlier. Analysts attributed the recovery mainly to better conventional memory chip pricing, which would offset weaker sales volumes of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips as Samsung has yet to supply its latest HBM products to Nvidia. HBM chips, critical for artificial intelligence (AI) development, are designed to reduce power consumption and process large datasets by stacking chips vertically. Analysts said demand for memory chips, particularly from hyperscalers and AI-related investments for services such as ChatGPT, have put more workload on general servers, thus boosting conventional memory chip prices. Prices of some DRAM chips, widely used in servers, smartphones and PCs, jumped 171.8% in the third quarter from a year earlier, according to TrendForce data. While Samsung's conventional memory business performed well, analysts said delays in supplying its latest 12-layer HBM3E chips to Nvidia have hurt its profit and share price. Rivals SK Hynix and Micron have gained more from AI-driven demand, while Samsung's exposure to China, where advanced chip sales are restricted by the United States, has constrained its growth. Analysts said market sentiment toward Samsung's shares and chip business, including both memory and contract chip manufacturing, is expected to improve as it secures supply deals with major customers such as OpenAI and Tesla. Samsung shares have risen more than 43% following its announcement of a chip supply deal with Tesla in July. During OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's visit to South Korea earlier this month, Samsung, SK Hynix and OpenAI announced partnerships to supply advanced memory chips to the Stargate project. The AI chip deal between OpenAI and AMD, one of Samsung's major HBM customers, would also benefit Samsung, said Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities. Ryu added that Samsung's $16.5 billion foundry deal with Tesla has lifted expectations that Samsung's struggling contract chip manufacturing business could win more orders from major tech firms if the company delivers the project as planned. While recent AI-driven supply deals signal a positive outlook for Samsung, analysts cautioned that uncertainties remain, including potential U.S. tariffs on chips and China's tightened export controls on rare earth materials used in advanced chips and manufacturing equipment. In September, Micron said it expects to sell out all of its HBM chips for calendar year 2026 in the coming months due to strong demand. Berlin (dpa) – Terrible are the days spent largely on – and bent over – the toilet. If you're afflicted with diarrhoea and vomiting, you fervently want your body to stop promptly expelling whatever you eat or drink. There are many possible culprits for these nasty gastrointestinal infections, frequently rota- or noroviruses. Bacteria can also be behind them, including Salmonella, Campylobacter and enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). Whatever's responsible for the diarrhoea and vomiting, the infection causes the body to lose a lot of fluids and electrolytes – minerals key to many bodily functions. Groups at particular risk of severe illness – in part because of greater sensitivity to the effects of dehydration – are the elderly, infants and young children, and people with a weakened immune systems. They should be medically examined soon after the onset of the diarrhoea and vomiting. Others should see a doctor if they experience symptoms such as serious circulatory problems, muscle cramps, drowsiness or confusion, high fever, blood in their stool or diarrhoea and vomiting lasting longer than three days. A warning sign of critical fluid loss is "when the tongue is extremely dry, looks very barky and deeply grooved, and the patient themself says, 'My mouth is so dry!" says Dr Birgit Terjung, spokeswoman for the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS). Another sign is a severe headache. A skin turgor test can provide the crucial clue: Gently pinch the skin on your forearm for a few seconds, then let go. If the skin remains raised instead of snapping back to its original position, "it's a sure sign of dehydration," Terjung says. Severe dehydration is an emergency requiring prompt treatment. Fluids and electrolytes are then replenished intravenously. To help your body get through an episode of diarrhoea and vomiting, it's essential to replace lost fluids and salts – electrolytes when dissolved in water. Savoury biscuits with sweet tea can do the trick, some health experts advise. Or you could sip broth. In severe cases of diarrhoea, and when children or the elderly are affected, special electrolyte solutions are advisable. They're available in powder form in chemists and pharmacies. Alternatively, you can drink an oral rehydration solution recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO): Mix 1 litre of mineral water, 4 teaspoons of sugar, a 3/4 teaspoon of salt and 250 millilitres of orange juice. Germany's Federal Institute of Public Health (BIÖG) advises against taking anti-diarrhoeal medications, since the body flushes out pathogens and toxins via the diarrhoea. Governments and tech firms around the world are closely watching Australia, which in December will become the first country to block the use of social media by people younger than 16. Social media platforms will not be required to conduct age verification procedures; instead, they will be asked to use artificial intelligence and behavioural data to reliably infer age. In a parliamentary hearing on online safety rules on Monday, YouTube's senior manager of government affairs in Australia, Rachel Lord, said the government's programme was well-intentioned, but it could have "unintended consequences." "The legislation will not only be extremely difficult to enforce, it also does not fulfil its promise of making kids safer online," Lord said. When asked if Google was lobbying officials in Washington to raise the issue when Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese meets U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington next week, Google Australia's government affairs director Stef Lovett said her U.S. colleagues were aware of the issues that the company faces in Australia. California-based Cerebras makes high-performance AI chips and systems designed to speed up the training and deployment of large AI models, competing with industry leader Nvidia NVDA.O in the rapidly expanding AI chip market. Among its largest clients is Abu Dhabi-backed cloud and AI firm G42, which signed a deal in 2023 to acquire supercomputers from the startup. G42's past ties to China have attracted scrutiny in Washington, due to concerns around Beijing's access to advanced semiconductors including via third parties such as the UAE, which has been spending billions of dollars on its AI push, looking to leverage its strong relations with the U.S. to secure access to the technology. Technology giants, including Nvidia and OpenAI, are working with G42 to build the first phase of Stargate UAE, but the deal has not been finalised amid these security concerns, Reuters reported, citing sources. Cerebras-built computers for G42 have so far remained in the U.S., with Middle East deals requiring export licences from the Trump administration.
