HONG KONG (Reuters) -U.S. semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm admitted that it had not informed Chinese authorities when it completed its acquisition of Israel's Autotalks in June, China's market regulator said on Sunday. The disclosure was made two days after China launched an antitrust investigation into Qualcomm examining whether the U.S. firm violated China's antitrust law by not declaring some details of its acquisition of the Israeli chip designer. Qualcomm didn't immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on Sunday.  (Reporting by Selena Li)

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia's Qantas Airways said on Sunday that it was one of the companies whose customer data had been published by cybercriminals after it was stolen by a hacker in a July breach of a database containing the personal information of the airline's customers. The airline said in July that more than a million customers had sensitive details such as phone numbers, birth dates or home addresses accessed in one of Australia's biggest cyber breaches in years. Another four million customers had just their name and email address taken during the hack, it said at the time. The July breach represented Australia's most high-profile cyberattack since telecommunications giant Optus and health insurer Medibank were hit in 2022, incidents that prompted mandatory cyber resilience laws. On Sunday, Qantas said in a statement that it was "one of a number of companies globally that has had data released by cyber criminals following the airline’s cyber incident in early July, where customer data was stolen via a third party platform". "With the help of specialist cyber security experts, we are investigating what data was part of the release," it said. "We have an ongoing injunction in place to prevent the stolen data being accessed, viewed, released, used, transmitted or published by anyone, including third parties," the airline added. Hacker collective Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters is behind the Qantas data release, which occurred after a ransom deadline set by the group passed, the Guardian Australia news site reported. Qantas declined to comment on the report. (Reporting by Sam McKeith in Sydney)

(Reuters) -Andrew Tulloch, co-founder of Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab, has left the AI company to join Meta Platforms, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.   A Thinking Machines Lab spokesperson confirmed the departure to the WSJ, saying that "Andrew has decided to pursue a different path for personal reasons". Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Thinking Machines Lab could not immediately be reached for comment. Meta did not respond to a request for comment. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously reached out to OpenAI’s former chief technology officer, Mira Murati, and offered to buy her fledgling startup, Thinking Machines Lab, WSJ had earlier reported, stating that upon refusal, Zuckerberg had approached more than a dozen of the startup's employees, including Tulloch, to jump ship. Tulloch had been offered a package that could have been worth $1.5 billion over at least six years, with top bonuses and extraordinary stock performance, according to the WSJ. Zuckerberg has been aggressively hiring from rivals in order to close the gap in advanced AI, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman saying that Meta offered its employees bonuses of $100 million to recruit them, as the tech giant seeks to ramp up its artificial intelligence strategy. Meta has been offering some of Silicon Valley's most lucrative pay packages and striking startup deals to attract top researchers, a strategy that follows the underwhelming performance of its Llama 4 model. BERLIN (Reuters) -Europe needs to build up its own digital infrastructure to reduce dependence on U.S. providers, but that does not mean turning away from them completely, Germany's digital minister Karsten Wildberger told Reuters. Some Europeans, unsettled by U.S. President Donald Trump's trade wars to promote U.S. interests, have begun seeking alternatives to the digital services sphere dominated by U.S. tech firms.  To achieve digital sovereignty, Germany and the European Union need to "actively participate in this (sector) as players," not as customers, as is the case now, he said in an interview this week.  "There is a huge growth market for technology, innovation, software, data and artificial intelligence," he said.  Germany and Europe have produced global leaders in their fields, such as Mistral AI, DeepL and Aleph Alpha, he said.  But Wildberger said U.S. companies are still far ahead in sectors such as artificial intelligence and will be needed as partners on Germany's path to its own business models.  "Digital sovereignty doesn't mean protectionism. We want to and must be accessible for the global market," Wildberger said.  "U.S. companies of course also continue to be interested in doing business abroad," he said when asked about concerns that Trump could bring about a sudden end to transatlantic cooperation. But he said that German companies needed to be able to choose between alternatives, for example by choosing where data is stored and who operates the infrastructure. Digital sovereignty also entailed rethinking an entire long and complex supply chain, which stretches from rare earths and chip design to servers and cables, Wildberger added.  (Reporting by Andreas Rinke. By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The chair of the Federal Communications Commission said on Friday that major U.S. online retail websites have removed several million listings for prohibited Chinese electronics as part of a crackdown by the agency. FCC Chair Brendan Carr said in an interview that the items removed are either on a U.S. list of barred equipment or were not authorized by the agency, including items like home security cameras and smart watches from companies including Huawei, Hangzhou Hikvision, ZTE and Dahua Technology Company. Carr said companies are putting new processes in place to prevent future prohibited items as a result of FCC oversight. "We're going to keep our efforts up," Carr said. The FCC issued a new national security notice reminding companies of prohibited items including video surveillance equipment. Carr said the items could allow China to "surveil Americans, disrupt communications networks and otherwise threaten U.S. national security." U.S. agencies in recent years have taken a series of actions against Chinese tech companies, including telecom, semiconductors, vehicles and others raising national security concerns. This is the latest push to prevent unapproved Chinese electronics from getting to the U.S. market. Earlier this week, the FCC said it plans to vote this month to tighten restrictions on telecommunications equipment made by Chinese companies deemed national security risks, the latest in a series of U.S. actions targeting Beijing. The U.S. telecom regulator previously named companies including Huawei, ZTE, China Mobile and China Telecom to the so-called "Covered List," which bars the FCC from authorizing the import or sale of new equipment from those companies. The agency will vote on October 28 to prohibit authorization of devices containing component parts that are on the Covered List and authorize the agency to prohibit the sale of previously authorized Covered List equipment in specific cases. In March, the FCC said it was investigating nine Chinese companies on the Covered List including Huawei, ZTE as well as Hytera Communications, Dahua Technology Company, Pacifica Networks/ComNet and China Unicom (Americas). The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately comment. The FCC previously barred some Chinese companies from providing telecommunications services in the United States, citing national security concerns. Last month, the FCC began proceedings to withdraw recognition from seven test labs owned or controlled by the Chinese government, citing U.S. national security concerns. By Prakhar Srivastava (Reuters) -Corporate travel and expense company Navan said on Friday it is targeting a valuation of up to $6.45 billion in its U.S. initial public offering, below the level it reached in a 2022 funding round, as it pushes ahead with listing plans despite the U.S. government shutdown. The Palo Alto, California-based firm plans to raise about $960 million by offering 36.92 million shares priced between $24 and $26 apiece. Its shares are expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq under the "NAVN" ticker symbol. The offering comes amid a rebound in U.S. IPO activity, driven by easing market volatility, which is lifting investor sentiment after a period of trade policy uncertainty. The strong market debuts of Alliance Laundry and Phoenix Education Partners on Thursday underscored renewed appetite for risk among investors. Still, the U.S. government shutdown threatens to stall the recovery, with the Securities and Exchange Commission suspending IPO reviews and other regulatory approvals as it is operating with limited staff. "The IPO comes amid heightened volatility in equities in general and big weakness in some of this year's U.S. IPO vintage," said Josef Schuster, CEO of IPO research firm IPOX. "While IPO sentiment remains positive overall, we expect this to weigh on IPO demand going forward," Schuster added. "We therefore believe that issuers need to be flexible to potentially accommodate this changing market environment with more attractive offering terms." Navan was valued at $9.2 billion in 2022 after raising $300 million in a Series G funding round. Founded in 2015 as TripActions by Ariel Cohen and Ilan Twig, Navan initially focused on corporate travel management, aiming to modernize services traditionally provided by companies such as American Express and SAP Concur. Over the years, Navan has expanded into corporate payments and expense management, and spread its tentacles across the world, serving global clients including Zoom Communications and Lyft, according to its website. Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Jefferies, Mizuho and Morgan Stanley are among the underwriters for the offering. (Reporting by Prakhar Srivastava in Bengaluru; Editing by Alan Barona)

By Blake Brittain (Reuters) -A federal jury in Marshall, Texas found on Friday that Samsung Electronics owes patent owner Collision Communications nearly $445.5 million in damages for infringing on patents related to 4G, 5G and Wi-Fi communications standards. The jury said that Samsung's laptops, Galaxy smartphones and other wireless-enabled devices infringe four Collision patents. The verdict is one of several nine-figure patent infringement verdicts that Samsung has been hit with in the same Marshall, Texas court in recent years. Spokespeople and attorneys for the companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Peterborough, New Hampshire-based Collision sued Samsung in 2023 for infringing patents related to improving wireless network efficiency. Collision said in the lawsuit that the patents stemmed from research conducted by defense contractor BAE Systems, which is not involved in the case. Samsung denied the allegations and argued that the patents were invalid. (Reporting by Blake Brittain in Washington, Editing by Alexia Garamfalvi and Diane Craft)
