(Reuters) -Universal Music and Warner Music are nearing landmark artificial intelligence licensing deals, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. Universal and Warner could each strike deals with AI companies within weeks, the newspaper said. Talks involved start-ups such as ElevenLabs, Stability AI, Suno, Udio and Klay Vision, the report said, adding that the music companies are also in talks with large technology groups, including Alphabet's Google and Spotify. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. Universal, Warner, Google and Spotify did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment. The growing use of generative AI in creative industries has triggered a wave of lawsuits, with artists, authors and rights holders accusing AI firms of using copyrighted material without consent or compensation to train their models. The deal talks have centred on how the labels license their songs for creating AI-generated tracks and for training large language models, the report said. The music companies are seeking a payment structure similar to that for streaming, whereby playing a song triggers a micropayment, the report added. SEOUL (Reuters) -Shares of South Korea's Samsung Electronics jumped 4.7% and SK Hynix soared 12% on Thursday, bolstered by a deal with OpenAI to support the ChatGPT maker's expansive Stargate artificial intelligence data centre project. The partnership, announced late on Wednesday, sent Samsung shares to their highest in more than four years and SK Hynix to an all-time high, adding $37 billion to their combined market capitalisation. Their rally also propelled the benchmark KOSPI index more than 3% to a record. "There have been worries about high bandwidth memory (HBM) chip prices falling next year on intensifying competition, but such worries will be easily resolved by the strategic partnership," Jeff Kim, an analyst at KB Securities, said in a note, expecting a surge in demand from the project. "Since Stargate is a key project led by President Trump, there also is a possibility the partnership will have a positive impact on South Korea's trade negotiations with the U.S.," Kim said. OpenAI, participating in President Donald Trump's $500 billion Stargate private-sector initiative to build AI infrastructure in the U.S., agreed on Wednesday to join forces with the two chipmakers in semiconductor procurement and work on building two data centres in South Korea, a Korean-style Stargate. With the new data centres, which will have an initial capacity of 20 megawatts, Seoul is hoping to become an AI hub in Asia, while OpenAI is looking to cement its position in the country which has the second-largest number of paying ChatGPT users after the United States. Samsung Electronics' affiliates Samsung SDI, Samsung C&T and Samsung SDS also rose sharply on partnerships with the U.S. firm. The global AI boom has been driving strong demand for semiconductors, helping South Korea's exports rise in September at the fastest pace in 14 months despite a hit from U.S. tariffs, blowing past market expectations. South Korea hopes to formalise by late October a preliminary trade deal reached with Trump in July, lowering U.S. tariffs on South Korean imports in return for a $350 billion investment in the U.S. However, follow-up negotiations have stalled due to Seoul's concerns over the foreign exchange implications and structure of the investment package. By Jonathan Stempel (Reuters) -A federal judge said Coinbase shareholders may pursue a narrowed lawsuit accusing the largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange operator of concealing business risks, including whether it would be sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission. In a Tuesday night decision, U.S. District Judge Brian Martinotti in Newark, New Jersey rejected requests by Coinbase, top executives and directors for a full dismissal of claims based on dozens of statements made over two years in regulatory filings, earnings calls, blog posts and tweets. Shareholders said Coinbase defrauded them into believing it was improbable the SEC would accuse it in court of operating an unregistered securities exchange, and misrepresented the risk they could lose assets if Coinbase filed for bankruptcy. Martinotti said shareholders cannot pursue claims based solely on "group pleading," where statements in group-published documents such as press releases do not suggest any particular defendant intended to commit fraud. "Where plaintiffs have appropriately provided defendant-by-defendant particularity, the claims must remain," he added. Martinotti's 59-page decision does not say which statements were dismissed, because the parties did not identify which may constitute group pleading. "Judges are not like pigs, hunting for truffles buried in briefs," the judge said in a footnote.      A spokeswoman for Coinbase had no immediate comment. Lawyers for the shareholders did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Coinbase's share price fell 12% on June 6, 2023 after the SEC sued the company for allowing trading in tokens that the regulator said should have been registered as securities. Shares also fell more than 26% on May 11, 2022 after Coinbase added disclosures and reported a larger-than-expected revenue decline. The proposed class action led by Swedish pension fund Sjunde AP-Fonden covers Coinbase shareholders from April 14, 2021 to June 5, 2023. In February, the SEC ended its lawsuit against Coinbase, as the Trump administration eases regulatory oversight of the cryptocurrency industry. The case is In re Coinbase Global Inc Securities Litigation, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, No. 22-04915. (Reporting by Jonathan Stempel in New York, Editing by Franklin Paul)

By Nick Carey and Jesus Calero LONDON (Reuters) -Tesla's sales rose in several European markets in September, including France and Denmark, driven by its updated Model Y, but analysts say the automaker risks losing ground as competition intensifies and its ageing lineup remains unchanged. The U.S. electric vehicle maker showed continued growth in Norway and Spain, local industry data showed on Wednesday, with the revised Model Y the best-selling model in Denmark. However, new car registrations – a proxy for sales – fell in Sweden and in the Netherlands for the ninth straight month. Tesla has seen sales slump in Europe this year, as its limited and ageing lineup contends with a wave of new EVs from European and Chinese manufacturers. The company has not launched a new mass-market model since the Model Y in 2020. RISING COMPETITION AND BACKLASH VS MUSK Matthias Schmidt of Schmidt Automotive Research, said the uptick "reflects a bottoming out of the downward trend rather than any real signs of an expected uplift being anywhere around the corner." He added that an affordable version of the Model Y could help in 2026, but "we expect things will remain tough for Tesla in a more competitive market environment." Tesla's competitive problems have been compounded by a backlash by some consumers against its CEO Elon Musk, who helped bankroll Donald Trump's U.S. presidential election victory last year and has championed European far-right parties. Tesla has argued that its revamped Model Y, which it began delivering in many European markets in June, would lead a recovery in European sales. For January-August, Tesla's sales were down 42.9% year-on-year in the European Union and down 32.6% in Europe as a whole. During the same period, industry-wide EV sales in the EU rose 24.8%. China's BYD outsold Tesla in the EU in August for the second time this year, though Tesla outperformed its Chinese rival across Europe as a whole. Only a few years ago Tesla was largely unchallenged in Europe and the Model Y was Europe's top-selling car in 2023, but now faces dozens of much newer models from competitors across the continent. "Tesla may still be a big fish, but the pond is now full of serious competitors," said Andy Palmer, chairman of EV advocacy group Electric Vehicles UK. "Unless it refreshes its range, it will keep losing market share." MIXED RESULTS ACROSS KEY MARKETS In September, Tesla reported a 2.74% annual increase in sales in France and a 20.5% rise in Denmark. In Norway, Tesla's registrations were up 14.7%, with its Model Y and Model 3 taking the top two spots for sales. Tesla sales rose 3.4% in Spain, boosted by a 60% increase in new Model Y registrations. But in Sweden, which was Tesla's worst-performing market in Europe in the first eight months of the year, its registrations fell 64% to 1,726 cars, although that was up sharply from the 210 cars it registered there in August. Sales in the Netherlands fell 48% in September. Andy Leyland, co-founder of supply chain specialist SC Insights, said the competition Tesla faces is about to get worse, as Chinese automakers roll out their distribution networks in key European markets like Germany, the United Kingdom and France. "It will be really critical to see whether Tesla can still compete," Leyland said. (Reporting by Nick Carey; Editing by Mark Potter and Louise Heavens)

(Reuters) -Microsoft's Xbox has raised the price of the highest tier of Game Pass by 50% and expanded its offerings under the videogame subscription service to include more games, enhanced cloud streaming and a revamped rewards system. Xbox will now charge $29.99 per month for a Game Pass Ultimate subscription, $10 higher than earlier, the console maker said in a post on Wednesday. In return, these subscribers will get more than 75 first-day releases a year, including premium titles such as "Call of Duty: Black Ops 7", and "Ninja Gaiden 4." Microsoft had last month also announced price hikes for its consoles in the U.S. for a second time this year due to tariff-induced cost pressures. Xbox has made big bets on its subscription service by offering more premium titles and cloud gaming access, as it seeks to establish a foothold in the games-as-a-service industry to counter sluggish console sales and economic uncertainty. Alongside the price increase, the company rebranded its cheapest and middle tiers to "Essential" and "Premium", and included unlimited cloud gaming in them, as a part of its push to allow gamers to stream titles anywhere. Prices for the other two tiers remain unchanged, Xbox said. (Reporting by Zaheer Kachwala in Bengaluru; Editing by Leroy Leo)
