(Reuters) -Canadian carrier WestJet said on Monday the personal information of some passengers was exposed in a cybersecurity breach earlier this year, though no payment data was compromised. The airline said it detected suspicious activity on June 13 and later determined that a "sophisticated, criminal third party" had gained unauthorized access to its systems. The aviation industry's growing dependence on complex digital systems and vast stores of passenger data has made it an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals. Earlier this month, a ransomware attack on Collins Aerospace, a unit of RTX, disrupted operations across major European airports, crippling check-in and baggage systems at popular hubs such as London's Heathrow and Berlin. WestJet said the type of data exposed in the breach varied but could include names, contact details, travel information and documents tied to reservations. However, no credit card and debit card numbers, expiration dates and CVV numbers were obtained during the breach. In a notice to U.S. residents on Monday, the carrier said it had worked closely with law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. It also notified relevant authorities, including the attorneys general of U.S. states where residents were affected. (Reporting by Shivansh Tiwary in Bengaluru; Editing by Krishna Chandra Eluri)

By Jody Godoy (Reuters) -California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a state law on Monday that would require ChatGPT developer OpenAI and other big players to disclose their approach to mitigating potential catastrophic risk from their cutting-edge AI models. California is the home to top AI players including OpenAi Alphabet's Google, Meta Platforms, Nvidia and Anthropic and with this bill wants to be seen as leading on regulation of an industry potentially critical to its economy in the years ahead.  "California has proven that we can establish regulations to protect our communities while also ensuring that the growing AI industry continues to thrive," Newsom said in a press release on the law. Newsom's office said the law, known as SB 53, fills the gap left by Congress, which so far has not passed broad AI legislation, and provides a model for the U.S. to follow. (Reuters) -Alphabet-owned YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit that U.S. President Donald Trump brought against the company over the suspension of his account following the January 2021 U.S. Capitol riots, a court filing showed on Monday. Trump filed lawsuits against Twitter, now known as X, and Facebook owner Meta , as well as Alphabet's Google, and their chief executives in July 2021, alleging they unlawfully silenced conservative viewpoints. Both Meta and X agreed earlier this year to pay to settle the lawsuits. Under the settlement, $22 million will be paid on Trump's behalf to the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the construction of a $200 million ballroom that Trump is building at the White House. The rest of the settlement payment will go to other plaintiffs in the case including the American Conservative Union. (Reporting by Deborah Sophia in Bengaluru; Editing by Tasim Zahid)

(Reuters) -OpenAI is planning to release a new version of its Sora generator that creates videos featuring copyrighted material, unless rights holders opt out of having their work appear, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. The artificial intelligence startup began notifying talent agencies and studios over the past week about the opt-out process and the product, which it plans to release in the coming days, the report said. The new process would mean movie studios and other intellectual property owners would have to explicitly ask OpenAI not to include their copyrighted material in videos Sora creates, according to the report. While copyrighted characters will require an opt-out, the new product will not generate images of recognizable public figures without their permission, the Journal said. Separately, Wired reported on Monday that OpenAI is preparing to launch a standalone app for Sora 2, featuring a vertical video feed with swipe-to-scroll navigation, resembling TikTok. Users would be able to create videos that are up to 10 seconds long, using Sora, according to documents viewed by Wired. There is no option to upload photos or videos from a user's camera roll or other apps. The app has an identity verification feature that allows users to confirm their likeness, Wired said. If a user has verified their identity, they can use their likeness in videos. OpenAI launched the app internally last week and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from employees, the report said. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on both the media reports. Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched Sora in December last year, expanding its foray into multimodal AI technologies and competing with similar text-to-video tools from Meta and Alphabet's Google, along with Stability AI's Stable Video Diffusion. Last week, Meta unveiled Vibes, a platform where users can create and share short-form, AI-generated videos. (Reporting by Juby Babu in Mexico City; Editing by Sahal Muhammed and Alan Barona)

(Reuters) -Online marketplace Etsy on Monday said it will transfer its common stock listing to the New York Stock Exchange, with trading set to begin on October 13. The company said it expects to cease listing on Nasdaq on October 10. Shares of Etsy, which has a market capitalization of about $6.36 billion, have risen nearly 41% so far this year. Earlier on Monday, OpenAI partnered with Etsy to launch instant checkout on ChatGPT, allowing users to buy directly from Etsy sellers within the chat to boost shopping on the platform. The Brooklyn, New York City-based company's shares closed up 15.8% at $74.34, the highest since February 2024 after the news. In July, Etsy reported upbeat second-quarter revenue on strong demand for lower-priced products, including handcrafted goods, even as the broader retail industry struggles with inflationary pressures. By AJ Vicens (Reuters) -The U.S. federal law that facilitates a significant portion of information sharing between the federal government and private sector is likely to expire October 1 in a development that could have major impacts on private industry and government cyber threat coordination.  WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Despite broad bipartisan support, lawmakers have not agreed on how to either renew or modify the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act, first passed in 2015, which offers private organizations legal protections to share cyber threat information with each other or the government.  Expiration of the law could lead to a dramatic decrease in information sharing by private entities, according to a client alert written by five attorneys with the WilmerHale law firm posted September 15 to the firm’s website.  KEY QUOTES “Without the critical protection for legal privileges—and the perceived need for liability and antitrust protections—private entities are less likely to voluntarily share information with the federal government or private entities due to a perceived increased risk,” the attorneys wrote. “The consequences could be significant, especially considering the fact that the private sector owns and operates most critical infrastructure in the United States.” Michigan Democratic Senator Gary Peters said that the authorities in the law are "critical to protecting our national and economic security from cyberattacks." A bipartisan group of leaders in the House, Trump administration and a "coalition in the Senate all support extending this legislation for 10 years. It's shameful we've reached this point — we need to pass a long-term clean extension immediately." The White House did not respond to a request for comment. CONTEXT The deadline looms as federal lawmakers work to avert a partial government shutdown that would lead to hundreds of thousands of federal employees being furloughed without pay and disruptions to a wide range of services. (Reuters) -Alphabet-owned YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit that U.S. President Donald Trump brought against the company over the suspension of his account following the January 2021 U.S. Capitol riots, a court filing showed on Monday. The deal makes Google the last of the three big tech companies to resolve lawsuits Trump brought in July 2021 accusing them of unlawfully silencing conservative viewpoints. Trump had also sued Twitter, now known as X, and Facebook owner Meta , as well as Alphabet's Google, and their chief executives in July 2021. Meta and X agreed earlier this year to pay to settle the lawsuits. Under the YouTube settlement, $22 million will be paid on Trump's behalf to the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit that the filing says is dedicated to the construction of a $200 million ballroom that Trump is building at the White House. Work on the 90,000-square-foot (8361.27 square meters) facility is expected to be completed "long before" Trump's four-year term ends in January 2029. The remaining amount will go to other plaintiffs in the case, including the American Conservative Union, which sponsors the Conservative Political Action Conference, and U.S. author Naomi Wolf. YouTube did not admit wrongdoing and will not make product or policy changes under the settlement. Trump did not lose his YouTube account in 2021 but was suspended from uploading new videos; it was restored in 2023. In January, Meta agreed to pay about $25 million and X paid about $10 million in February to settle similar lawsuits by Trump. Meta's settlement designated $22 million for a fund for Trump's upcoming presidential library in Miami, Florida. (Reuters) -Chipmaker Wolfspeed said on Monday it has exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy after cutting its total debt by nearly 70% and lowering annual cash interest expense by roughly 60%. The company said it has sufficient liquidity to continue supplying customers with silicon carbide-based chips. Wolfspeed filed for Chapter 11 protection in late June in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, after flagging going‑concern doubts in May, citing deepening economic uncertainty from changing U.S. trade policies and weakening demand that triggered financial challenges. The company on Monday also added five new directors to its board, including Mike Bokan, most recently senior vice president of worldwide sales at Micron, and Eric Musser, who is set to retire this year as president of Corning Inc. Wolfspeed makes silicon carbide-based chips, which are more energy‑efficient and used in high-power‑conversion applications such as electric vehicles, solar inverters and industrial power systems. By Jody Godoy (Reuters) -California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into state law on Monday a requirement that ChatGPT developer OpenAI and other big players disclose how they plan to mitigate potential catastrophic risks from their cutting-edge AI models. California is the home to top AI companies including OpenAI, Alphabet's Google, Meta Platforms, Nvidia and Anthropic, and with this law seeks to lead on regulation of an industry critical to its economy, Newsom said. "California has proven that we can establish regulations to protect our communities while also ensuring that the growing AI industry continues to thrive," Newsom said in a press release. Newsom's office said the law, known as SB 53, fills a gap left by the U.S. Congress, which so far has not passed broad AI legislation, and provides a model for the U.S. to follow. If federal standards are put in place, Newsom said, the state legislature should "ensure alignment with those standards – all while maintaining the high bar established by SB 53." Last year, Newsom vetoed California's first attempt at AI legislation, which had faced fierce industry pushback. The bill would have required companies that spent more than $100 million on their AI models to hire third-party auditors annually to review risk assessments and allowed the state to levy penalties in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The new law requires companies with more than $500 million in revenue to assess the risk that their cutting-edge technology could break free of human control or aid the development of bioweapons, and disclose those assessments to the public. It allows for fines of up to $1 million per violation. Jack Clark, co-founder of AI company Anthropic, called the law "a strong framework that balances public safety with continued innovation." The industry still hopes for a federal framework that would replace the California law, as well as others like it enacted recently in Colorado and New York. Last year, a bid by some Republicans in the U.S. Congress to block states from regulating AI was voted down in the Senate 99-1. "The biggest danger of SB 53 is that it sets a precedent for states, rather than the federal government, to take the lead in governing the national AI market – creating a patchwork of 50 compliance regimes that startups don't have the resources to navigate," said Collin McCune, head of government affairs at Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. U.S. Representative Jay Obernolte, a California Republican, is working on AI legislation that could preempt some state laws, his office said, although it declined to comment further on pending legislation. Some Democrats are also discussing how to enact a federal standard. "It's not whether we're gonna regulate AI, it's do you want 17 states doing it, or do you want Congress to do it?" U.S. Representative Ted Lieu, a Democrat from Los Angeles, said at a recent hearing on AI legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
