KL's 74 steadies India A during 412-run chase against Australia A at Lucknow

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], September 25 (ANI): A steady half-century by KL Rahul and an unbeaten knock of 44* by Sai Sudarshan put India A ahead in their 412-run chase at the end of day three of their second four-day unofficial Test against Australia A at Lucknow on Thursday.

At the end of day three, India A was 169/2, with Sudharsan (44*) and Manav Suthar (1*) unbeaten. They need 243 more runs to win.

India started the day three with Australia A at 16/3, with Nathan McSweeney unbeaten at 11. After India elected to field first, half-centuries from McSweeney (74 in 162 balls, with 10 fours) and Jack Edwards (88 in 78 balls, with 11 fours and a six) took Australia to 420, despite Suthar’s figures of 5/107.

Sudharsan, with his 75, was the India A’s sole resistance as they managed to put up 194 runs, trailing by 226 runs. Henry Thornton (4/36) was the pick of the bowlers for the Aussies.

During their second innings, however, the Aussies slipped to 16/3. Pacer Mohammed Siraj (2/20) struck early on day three, removing Cooper Connolly (1), to reduce Australia A to 17/4. However, McSweeney put on a 90-run fifth-wicket stand with Josh Philippe (50 in 48 balls, with eight fours), helping his side go beyond the 100-run mark at least.

Gurnoor Brar (3/42) and Suthar (3/50) struck at regular intervals, bundling out Australia for 185 runs, leaving McSweeney unbeaten at 85* in 149 balls, with 10 fours and a six. Australia led by 411 runs, giving India 412 to win the unofficial Test.

During the run-chase, India started off well, with an 85-run stand between Narayan Jagadeesan (36 in 55 balls, with five fours) and KL Rahul. Later, KL carried the chase with Sudharsan, taking India to the triple-figure mark and scoring at a good tick. KL retired hurt at 74 in 92 balls, with nine fours. India ended the day with Sudharsan and Suthar at the crease, as Devdutt Padikkal (5) fell for cheap.

Ravichandran Ashwin signs with Sydney Thunder for BBL 15

Sydney [Australia], September 25 (ANI): Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin has signed with Sydney Thunder for the Big Bash League (BBL) season 15. He will be the first cricketer who has played for the India men’s cricket team to represent a BBL club.

“Indian legend Ravichandran Ashwin has created history, joining Sydney Thunder for BBL|15. The Thunder Nation will welcome the biggest overseas signing since the League’s inception, with Ashwin set to become the first male player to have represented India to join a BBL club,” Sydney Thunder said in a release.

Ashwin will enter Thunder’s line-up in early January and ignite the club’s push to play in back-to-back BBL finals, having lost to Hobart Hurricanes in the previous season.

The release said that 39-year-old brings an unrivalled cricket resume, a hunger to win and commitment to growing the game globally. His presence in Thunder Green will bring leadership and class on the field, while uniting the club’s multicultural Western Sydney heartland, it added.

In 287 matches for India, Ashwin’s off-spin claimed 765 international wickets, including 537 wickets at Test level. He is a Cricket World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013) winner with India, the ICC’s Cricketer and Test Cricketer of the Year of 2016 and a member of the 2011-20 Men’s Test Team of the Decade.

In 16 IPL seasons, Ashwin made 221 appearances for five franchises, making him the tournament’s seventh most-capped player. He is a two-time IPL champion with Chennai Super Kings, having won in 2010 and 2011, and has 187 career wickets in the tournament, ranking him fifth all-time. He has a total of 317 wickets in 333 T20 matches.

Ashwin joins the club following his retirement from international duties and the IPL.

Ashwin, following his landmark signing, said in a statement:

“Thunder was crystal clear about how they would use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we are fully aligned on my role. I love how David Warner (the Sydney Thunder captain) plays the game, and it is always better when your leader shares your mindset. I cannot wait to perform for the Thunder Nation,” said the spin wizard.

Before Ashwin’s arrival, Thunder kick off their BBL|15 campaign in Hobart with a grand final rematch against the Hurricanes on December 16, before returning home to ENGIE Stadium for a blockbuster Sydney Smash on December 20.

ISSF Junior World Cup: India takes early lead, sweeps women's 50 m prone event podium

New Delhi [India], September 25 (ANI): Indian shooters started off their ISSF Junior World Cup campaign in New Delhi with a high, securing all the podium spots in the women’s 50 m prone event at Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on Thursday.

The men missed out on the gold in the same event, had to settle for a silver and bronze, but it was all enough to help India take an early lead in the medal tally, as per Olympics.com.

Anushka Thakur walked out with the gold in the women’s prone 50 m rifle shooting contest, with 621.6 points, edging out Anshikha, who shot 619.2 and Aadhya Agrawal, who secured a bronze with 615.9 points.

India’s Saniya Sudesh Sapale (610.9) and Nimrat Kaur Brar (604.3) also finished within the top 10 with eighth and ninth spot finishes.

Coming to the men’s event, India’s Deependra Singh Shekhawat, who shot 617.9 points, missed out on gold narrowly, which went to Kamil Nuriakhmetov, who outdid the Indian by a point.

Rohit Kanyan (616.3) bagged the bronze medal ahead of Sergeib Novoselov. In the same event, the fifth spot went to Vedant Nitin Waghmare, while Kushagra Singh Rajawat and Kunal Sharma occupied the eighth and last place, respectively, in a field of 11 players.

A 69-member Indian shooting contingent, led by Paris 2024 Olympian Raiza Dhillon and Asian trap champion Sabeera Haris, is a part of the competition, which will conclude on October 2 and will feature 208 shooters from 19 federations. This is the first time a Junior World Cup has been held in India. (ANI)

Kalinga Lancers strengthen squad ahead of Hockey India League 2026

New Delhi [India], September 25 (ANI): Kalinga Lancers had a successful outing at the Hero Hockey India League auction, making key additions to their squad for the new season, scheduled to take place in January 2026.

With three Indian and four overseas slots to fill, Kalinga Lancers began proceedings by acquiring Australian goalkeeper Jed Snowden for Rs 10 lakh. The 24-year-old made his senior team debut earlier this year and was part of Australia’s recent Oceania Cup title-winning team, as per a press release from Kalinga Lancers.

The franchise then picked up local talent Amit Kumar Toppo at his base price of Rs 2 lakh. He was a member of Odisha’s maiden title-winning team at the Men’s Senior Hockey National Championship 2024. After a competitive bidding war with Delhi SG Pipers, the Lancers secured Australian forward Cooper Burns for Rs 34.5 lakh. The 23-year-old, named Most Valued Player in Hockey Australia’s League, made his senior team debut in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25.

Sunil PB, a rising talent in the Indian junior men’s setup, was signed for Rs. 2 lakh. He was part of Karnataka’s gold medal-winning team at the National Games earlier this year and has recently been selected for India’s junior squad for the upcoming Sultan of Johor Cup.

Craig Marais became the team’s third overseas acquisition, signed for Rs 10 lakh. He made his senior team debut for Australia in 2024 and has been a regular feature since.

After another intense bidding battle with Delhi, the Lancers brought in Australian midfielder Liam Henderson for Rs 42 lakh, making him their top buy at the auction. Henderson, currently part of Australia’s core group, was also a key contributor to their recent Oceania Cup triumph.

Boby Singh Dhami, who was part of the Lancers last season, was reacquired for Rs 10 lakh, completing the squad for the upcoming season.

Heading into the auction, the franchise had retained 13 players, including three overseas stars. The team’s retained core features a mix of international talent and Indian standouts from recent victories, providing a strong foundation for the new season. Rising stars who impressed last season have also been retained, ensuring continuity and growth.

Speaking on the squad composition, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said,

“The HIL auction has allowed us to strengthen our squad with precision and purpose. Our approach focused on retaining the core strengths while strategically adding players to address key areas of opportunity. The team we have built is balanced, competitive, and ready to perform at the highest level. As we head into the new season, our goal is clear: to compete with determination and aim for the championship.”

Team Manager Subbaiah said, ” We had our core players retained from the previous season and just needed to fill the remaining slots. The players we have brought in are solid, talented, and have been performing well in their respective careers.”

Assistant Coach Kariappa added, “Half of our job was already done by retaining the core team from last year, and we have managed to get the players we wanted. We are really happy with the outcome and are looking forward to working with these players and this wonderful franchise.”

England skipper Sciver Brunt feels CWC 2025 in India could be "seismic moment" for women's cricket

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 25 (ANI): England all-rounder Nat Sciver Brunt, leading her country for the first time in a Cricket World Cup is looking forward to the upcoming marquee 50-over event in India, saying that “there is nothing quite like playing in India” and the tournament could be a “seismic moment” for women’s cricket.

Brunt is confident that the upcoming tournament will have a significant impact on women’s cricket. The four-time champions, who last won the tournament by beating India by nine runs in 2017, will start their campaign against South Africa on October 3 at Guwahati.

Speaking to the ICC, the England skipper opened up on the tingling excitement of playing on the big stage in India.

“There is nothing quite like playing cricket in India. It really is special. And it is even more special when it is a World Cup,” she said as quoted by ICC.

“I have been lucky enough to play quite a lot of cricket in India, but I think World Cup cricket – especially with the prospect of passionate home support for India – is truly next level,” she said.

Sciver-Brunt added, “Whether we are there or not, you do get the feeling this could be a seismic moment for the women’s game.”

“If you think about India getting over the line in a close game, with all the noise and drama and excitement that it could bring, I think you begin to get a sense of what this competition could do for women’s cricket in India,” she continued.

The English skipper admitted to watching women’s cricket grow in India with the Women’s Premier League, having been associated with two-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI), being the tournament’s all-time leading run-getter with 1,027 runs in 29 matches at an average of 46.68, with a strike rate of 141.85, with eight fifties.

“But a World Cup is something else. I hope whatever outcome we see, we see that. I think we will all look back on our careers when we are retired and mark the World Cup in India as a game-changer,” she added.

Having been a part of England’s squad in the previous two editions of the tournament, when they finished as winners (2017) and runner-ups (2022) respectively, Sciver-Brunt will be leading their hopes of a fifth title.

The 33-year-old, who succeeded Heather Knight at the helm earlier this year, also conceded the emotions of captaining her country at the big stage.

“I do not feel it is something you think about growing up because all you can dream about is representing your country at all, but it is an honour – and one I am quite humbled by. I have had a taste of the job with the West Indies and India series this summer, and it was really enjoyable to work alongside Lottie (Charlotte Edwards) and to begin to shape how we want our team to play,” he said.

“There are a number of important things for us as we set about building our team for this competition and for next summer’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on home soil, but ultimately it comes back to winning. That’s our job, that is our focus,” he added.

In 18 ICC Cricket World Cup matches, Brunt has made 805 runs in 17 innings at an average of 57.50, with four centuries and two fifties and a best score of 148*.

Sciver-Brunt believes that while the competition in women’s cricket has only gotten fiercer, England has the goods to deliver on the big stage.

“The outcome of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup last year shows you that the margins between the teams are not always as big as people might think. I believe we have got a good mix of players who have been there and done it before and players for whom this is all very new and exciting,” said Brunt.

“There is a huge amount of talent in this group, and we have got a coach who knows exactly what it takes to win a World Cup. The job now is to put that all together on the pitch, to win the big moments and to step up when the pressure’s on to take us as far as we can possibly go,” she added.

In their lead-up to the tournament, the four-time winners will be facing off against India and Australia in warm-up fixtures on September 25 and 28, respectively, in Bengaluru. (ANI)

"Trying to find qualities of a leader in a lot of people": Agarkar clears air on Shreyas Iyer

New Delhi [India], September 25 (ANI): India’s Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has clarified that while Shreyas Iyer remains an important figure in India’s white-ball setup, his absence from red-ball cricket continues due to fitness reasons.

Iyer will lead India A against Australia A before heading into the ODI series in Australia.

“I don’t think we’ve discussed the 50-over format yet. At the moment, we have to pick the team for these two Test matches (against West Indies),” Agarkar said.

“Shreyas is a senior player. He obviously leads his franchise in IPL (Indian Premier League) cricket. He’s one of the senior guys. He was captain for India A as well. It’s not like because of that we are looking at him as a Test captain. We’re trying to find qualities of a leader in a lot of people and India A gives us an opportunity to see if somebody has that ability.”

“Unfortunately, I think the statement was put out already, with regards to his fitness in terms of red-ball cricket, he won’t be available…. and he’s been a key player in one-day cricket over the last few years,” he added.

Shreyas has conveyed to the BCCI that he has taken a decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience and work on his overall fitness, as per the BCCI media advisory.

As a result, the selectors did not consider him for the Rest of India squad for the upcoming Irani Cup against Vidarbha. However, Iyer will continue to lead the India A side in the three-match one-day series against Australia A, which begins on September 30 in Kanpur.

Iyer had low scores while playing in the red-ball match against Australia A and against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final.

“He gets three games before we go to Australia, and more than anything, we want him playing and playing well because he becomes a key member in the one-day squad,” Agarkar added. (ANI)

Tanvi and Changmai will this time compete in the U-17 categories as the Indian contingent hopes to build on the last two successful campaigns. India had won a gold and a bronze in 2024, and one gold, one silver, and one bronze in 2023, with both editions taking place in Chengdu, as per a press release from the Badminton Association of India (BAI).

The Indian team was selected based on the players’ performance in the just-concluded Ashwani Gupta Memorial All India Sub Junior (U-15 & U-17) Ranking Badminton Tournament 2025, held at Panchkula, Haryana, from September 13 to 21, 2025, and has a mix of some already established stars, along with a few fresh faces.

“India’s consistent success in the continental championships over the years reflects the strength of our junior development program. This squad has several promising players with the potential to bring home medals, which highlights the depth and talent within the team,” said Badminton Association of India Secretary General, Sanjay Mishra.

Among the squad, Sharayu Ranjane will feature in all three categories of U-15, teaming up with Soyara Shelar in girls’ doubles and Hemanth Sri Sammetla in mixed doubles.

Punith S and Deepak Raj Aditi, who will partner each other in the U-17 mixed doubles, will also be in action in boys and girls doubles, respectively.

BFI names 23-member squad for Asian Youth Games, training underway in NIS Patiala

New Delhi [India], September 25 (ANI): The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) on Thursday announced the 23-member squad for the 3rd Asian Youth Games 2025 in Bahrain, with training camp now underway at NS NIS Patiala from September 23 to October 20.

The team was selected based on performances at the 6th U-17 Junior Boys & Girls National Boxing Championship 2025, where gold medalists earned direct entry into the squad, and silver medalists were named as reserves in their respective categories, as per a press release from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).

Among the selected athletes are standout performers from the Asian U-17 Championships held in July 2025, where India clinched 43 medals and finished second overall. This achievement served as a reminder of India’s growing strength in youth boxing, challenging traditional powerhouses in the sport.

“In the past few months, our young boxers have shown they can stand toe-to-toe with the best in Asia, bringing home strong results at continental and national levels. This camp is about building on that momentum, sharpening their skills, and preparing them to be serious medal contenders in Bahrain, while underlining the rising strength of Indian boxing,” said Ajay Singh, President, BFI.

"We'd like them to play a bit more cricket": Agarkar on Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Shami

New Delhi [India], September 25 (ANI): Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has shared his thoughts on Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Shami, stressing the importance of game time for both players before they can be considered for regular selection.

Speaking on Kishan’s inclusion, Agarkar said on his presence in the Irani Trophy squad, “Yeah, he’s in the Irani Trophy team, yes. When we picked India A, he was not yet fit anyway. So he’s fit now. He’s a very good player as we know Ishan Kishan, but we’d like him to play a bit more cricket and show some performances.”

Regarding veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, the chief selector admitted there were no fresh updates but highlighted his lack of recent match practice.

“I don’t have an update. I think he has not played a lot of cricket in the last 2-3 years. I think he’s played one match for Bengal and one for the Duleep Trophy. So as a performer, we know what he can do, but he will need to play some cricket,” Agarkar explained.

India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Thursday announced a fifteen-member squad for the upcoming home Test series against West Indies, scheduled to begin on October 2 in Ahmedabad.

Despite speculation that Shubman Gill might be rested due to his involvement in India’s Asia Cup T20I campaign, the selectors have opted for a full-strength squad, including Jasprit Bumrah, for the World Test Championship campaign.

India will play two Test matches against the West Indies.

Karun Nair is not in the squad. Ravindra Jadeja has been announced as the vice captain.

Prasidh Krishna, who had a promising run in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, has been included despite suffering a head injury during India A’s second match against Australia A in Lucknow on Wednesday, which forced him to leave the field.

Rishabh Pant misses out as he continues to recover from a foot injury.

The Indian team will play the Asia Cup final on Sunday, September 28, giving Gill and a few other players just a few days before joining the Test squad. The selectors’ decision to go with a strong line-up reflects India’s intent to keep up a strong World Test Championship campaign.
