Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], September 29 (ANI): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed the state’s solidarity with the people of Palestine during a meeting with Palestine’s Ambassador Abdulla Abu Shawesh.

The meeting was held at the CM’s chamber in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, a statement by the Chief Minister’s Office said.

The Chief Minister told the Ambassador that Kerala has always stood with the people of Palestine. He said that Israel, with US backing, has been denying Palestine its democratic rights by undermining all international conventions, the statement said.

“Kerala stands firmly for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. The United Nations and the international community must act urgently to establish a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with UN resolutions, and to restore peace in West Asia. This has been the consistent position of the Left,” the CM added.

The Palestinian Ambassador detailed the challenges faced under Israeli occupation. He said Kerala’s support at this critical juncture is significant. “Palestine needs more support, and we hope it will come from across the world,” he added.

In a post on X, Vijayan said, “Had the honour of meeting Mr. Abdullah Abu Shawesh, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to India, during his visit to Kerala. Reiterated Kerala’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people and our demand for an immediate end to the genocide in Gaza. Kerala will always stand firm for justice to the people of Palestine.”

Shawesh said in a post on X, “It is my great pleasure to begin my three-day visit to Kerala, organized by the Kerala Media Academy, with a courtesy call this morning on the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala, Comrade Pinarayi Vijayan. What unites us; our shared humanity and common future, is deeply rooted in our convictions. I sincerely appreciate all the voices that continue to stand for justice and moral values. Taliban's ban on women's education is extremism, threatens Afghanistan's future: UN envoy Bennett

New York [US], September 28 (ANI): UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, has warned that the Taliban’s ban on women’s education constitutes extremism and threatens the country’s stability, development, and international standing, Tolo News reported.

Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday, Bennett said the Taliban’s emphasis on religious indoctrination over formal schooling was depriving Afghanistan’s younger generation of “opportunity and hope.”

He underscored the importance of credible, well-documented reports from Afghanistan, noting that they remain essential for shaping global debate and pushing meaningful international action. “Without such evidence,” he cautioned, “the plight of Afghan women and girls risks being overshadowed.”

According to Tolo News, Bennett also called for the creation of more platforms to allow Afghans themselves to be heard, particularly Islamic scholars and experts. He argued that their voices are critical in countering the Taliban’s narrative.

The UN envoy further highlighted the Taliban’s suppression of civil society, intimidation of critics, and reprisals against dissenters. “Despite attempts to silence opposition, the group’s actions remain under international scrutiny,” he said, as cited by Tolo News.

His remarks come as global human rights organisations continue to press the United Nations and international powers for stronger measures against Taliban restrictions, especially those targeting women and girls.

Bennett’s warning, Tolo News reported, underlines a grim reality for Afghanistan: without access to education and civil freedoms, the country risks long-term instability, deeper isolation from the international community, and the loss of an entire generation’s potential.

This concern was also echoed in a report published by the Atlantic Council on September 17, which stated that since the return of Taliban in 2021, more than one million girls in Afghanistan had been denied access to education, Tolo News reported.

The council further noted that education in Afghanistan had become an act of resistance.

A section of the report read: “Since the return of the Taliban in 2021 and their imposition of a gender apartheid system, more than one million girls in Afghanistan have been pushed out of school. Yet, across villages and cities, they continue to learn, build, and lead–often in silence, and often starting from next to nothing,” Tolo News quoted.

Tafsir Siyahposh, a women’s rights activist, said, “Our demand from the Islamic Emirate is to provide opportunities for women, reopen the doors of schools and universities. We may not have doctors tomorrow, which is extremely important. We may not have teachers. In every field where women are needed today, we might have no one left to step in,” Tolo News quoted.

Meanwhile, a number of female students in the country had once again called for the reopening of schools that had been shut to them.

Rabiya, a student, said, “When I work on a piece of art or paint a picture, I feel hopeful. I tell myself that even if I can’t go to school, at least I’ve managed to reach a certain point. Art is not less valuable than science, but worldly knowledge is necessary for us–we must learn it, because we are the ones who can build the future.”

Maryam, another student, said, “My only wish is that the doors of schools be reopened for us as soon as possible so that we can have a brighter future.”

Although the Islamic Emirate had recently remained silent on the matter, it had consistently labelled girls’ education as a domestic issue and called on countries and organisations not to interfere in Afghanistan’s internal affairs, as per Tolo News. (ANI)

From courtroom to target: Pakistan army accused of silencing human rights activist Zubair Baloch

Balochistan [Pakistan] September 27 (ANI): Advocate Zubair Baloch, a human rights activist and former chairman of the Baloch Students Organisation (BSO-Pajjar), was killed in a Pakistan Army raid along with his companion, Nasir Baloch.

The incident, which occurred during a military operation in Dalbandin, has drawn sharp criticism from rights activists who call it an act of state terrorism, the Baloch Nationalist Movement (BNM) said on Wednesday.

In a post on X, the Baloch Nationalist Movement (BNM) stated that Zubair was widely recognised for his peaceful political activism and outspoken criticism of enforced disappearances, exploitation of resources, and ongoing violations in Balochistan. Observers allege that his assassination was not coincidental but a deliberate targeting of a prominent voice advocating for the rights of the Baloch people.

The Pakistan Army later acknowledged carrying out the raid, a move that highlights the impunity with which the state conducts such operations. BNM contends that this latest killing fits into a broader pattern where political leaders, students, and civilians are subjected to violence and intimidation under the guise of security measures.

For years, Pakistan’s authorities have labelled the Baloch struggle as foreign-sponsored, often framing it as “Fitna-al-Hindustan”. BNM points out that such rhetoric is designed to discredit what is essentially a homegrown movement rooted in longstanding grievances. The killing of Zubair reinforces how the state conflates peaceful dissent with militancy to delegitimise legitimate demands, BNM stated.

BNM condemned the incident, stating that women, children, and nonviolent activists continue to face violence in Balochistan. “The murder of Advocate Zubair is further proof of the systematic campaign to suppress every voice that speaks for justice and dignity.”

Zubair, a law graduate and political activist, had led BSO-Pajjar, the student wing of a parliamentary party, and consistently promoted peaceful avenues of struggle. His death demonstrates the military’s intent to crush democratic opposition rather than engage in dialogue.

As Pakistan participates in the ongoing United Nations session, BNM has urged the international community to confront Islamabad’s human rights record. “This case highlights the urgency for global accountability,” BNM stated, warning that continued silence will only embolden further abuses. (ANI)

Washington, DC [US], September 26 (ANI): The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has strongly criticised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Urumchi on Tuesday, where he marked the 70th anniversary of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The exile group denounced the event as a staged propaganda exercise that concealed what it describes as an ongoing genocide against Uyghurs.

According to Chinese state media, Xi was welcomed with carefully arranged performances by Uyghur dancers and children waving national flags. For many Uyghurs, such images highlight the contrast between state-orchestrated celebrations and the reality of life under repression, including mass incarceration, forced labour, extensive surveillance, family separations, and the systematic destruction of cultural identity.

During his speech, Xi underlined the themes of “stability, development, and ethnic unity.” The WUC argued that these slogans in practice translate into fear, economic exploitation based on confiscated resources and coerced labour, and policies such as forced marriages aimed at erasing Uyghur culture. “This was not a commemoration; it was an attempt to disguise crimes against humanity,” said WUC President Turgunjan Alawdun.

The trip coincided with the release of a White Paper by China’s State Council on September 19. The document asserted that government programs had improved “happiness” and “well-being” among Uyghurs and laid out a five-part plan emphasising the rule of law, prosperity, cultural identity, ethnic unity, and Party leadership. It also touted economic growth, tourism, and joint civil-military projects as evidence of progress.

Rights groups dismissed the White Paper as a rebranding of policies rooted in heavy securitisation and forced assimilation. They pointed to restrictions on language, religion, and cultural freedoms, as well as intrusive monitoring systems that leave no room for independent civic life. The Uyghur Human Rights Project called the claims “propaganda designed to obscure widespread persecution.”

The WUC urged governments and international institutions to reject Beijing’s narrative and to reinforce findings of the 2022 UN Human Rights Office report and other treaty body reviews, which highlighted grave violations in Xinjiang. The WUC called for renewed global action to ensure accountability and defend the rights of Uyghurs and other Turkic communities. (ANI)

Pakistan accused of using blasphemy laws to oppress communities

Geneva [Switzerland], September 26 (ANI): At the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Alejandra Martinez Otero, the Human Rights Officer of the Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD), in her oral intervention, has raised alarm about Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, warning that these provisions are being increasingly misused to subjugate minorities and stifle free expression.

Addressing the UNHRC, she stated the urgent need for legal reform and the safety of the vulnerable communities.

She highlighted that Pakistan’s blasphemy statutes, which allow for the death penalty, have left dozens facing extreme punishments.

At least 53 individuals are currently on death row for blasphemy-related charges, she stated, and within that, minorities, particularly Ahmadis, Christians, and Hindus, are disproportionately accused, with many cases linked more to personal grievances or entrenched bias than to genuine religious offences.

She also raised concerns over the role of digital platforms in fuelling violence. Online activity and social media posts have frequently triggered mob attacks, sometimes with deadly consequences.

In 2024, civil society organisations reported several suspected extrajudicial killings tied to blasphemy allegations. Despite the severity of these crimes, those responsible are rarely brought to justice, creating what she described as a climate of impunity.

Another area of grave concern is the vulnerability of minority girls, who are at heightened risk of abduction and forced marriage.

She asserted that threats and false blasphemy charges are often used as tools to justify or conceal these abuses, compounding the dangers faced by young women and girls in minority communities. She called on the Council and its mechanisms to engage directly with Pakistan to press for reform.

Its recommendations included revising or repealing blasphemy provisions, ensuring fair trials for the accused, releasing those unfairly imprisoned, safeguarding communities at risk, and holding perpetrators of violence accountable. (ANI)

According to CTA, Australia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Her Excellency Clare Walsh, delivered the country’s statement at the session, highlighting continued restrictions on Tibetans and their cultural freedoms. The statement emphasised that governments should adhere to international law and norms, noting that “Governments should not interfere in the selection of religious leaders, including the Dalai Lama.”

Canberra’s position follows a series of domestic parliamentary discussions earlier this month. During Tibet Lobby Day in Canberra, several Australian MPs and senators publicly criticised Beijing’s planned interference in the Dalai Lama succession.

Australian Senator for Victoria, Steph Hodgins-May, told the Senate that the succession of the Dalai Lama is a sacred tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and urged Australians to take a principled stand against Chinese interference.

Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim further highlighted Beijing’s ongoing efforts to control Tibetans’ spiritual and cultural life, asserting that “any Dalai Lama appointed by the Chinese government has no legitimacy” and describing such interference as unacceptable. These remarks serve as a strong signal of international support for Tibetan religious autonomy, as highlighted by CTA.

In the House of Representatives, Susan Templeman MP reiterated the government’s stance that no external power should influence the appointment of religious leaders. Human Rights in China report flags repression, re-sentencing of journalist Zhang Zhan

New York [US], September 25 (ANI): Human Rights in China has released its latest weekly brief, illustrating China’s tightening grip on dissent, surveillance, and digital control, which has drawn fresh scrutiny amid a series of developments in the country’s worsening human rights climate.

At the centre of global concern is the case of Zhang Zhan, a former lawyer turned citizen journalist, who was sentenced to an additional four years in prison in Shanghai.

Zhang first came to international attention in 2020 when she documented the realities of Wuhan’s COVID-19 lockdown, capturing overwhelmed hospitals and severe shortages at a time when state media offered only scripted narratives. Her independent reporting led to a four-year sentence for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”, during which her health deteriorated from hunger strikes.

Zhang was re-arrested within months for refusing to remain silent. Authorities accused her of tarnishing China’s image through social media posts. Observers were barred from her trial, and it remains uncertain whether she received legal counsel. The UN Human Rights Office called the conviction “deeply disturbing” and urged her immediate and unconditional release.

HRIC also highlighted Beijing’s expanding legal and cyber apparatus. China’s official law database has been overhauled with new features, while updated cybersecurity reporting rules effective November 1 require incidents to be graded by severity, reflecting an increasingly broad definition of online threats. Adding to these measures, China introduced the world’s prototype “Satellite Internet Firewall”, equipped with AI-driven monitoring and decoy systems designed to filter vast volumes of data. At the same time, regulators imposed sanctions on popular platforms Weibo and Kuaishou for promoting “undesirable” celebrity content.

Concerns over transnational repression also intensified. Nine independent UN experts have demanded answers from Beijing regarding the cross-border harassment of activists and minorities who fled China. In the United States, dissident Yuanjun Tang admitted to spying on pro-democracy groups on behalf of Beijing’s authorities.

Inside China, the crackdown on civil society continued. Human rights advocate Zhang Yadi (Tara), known for championing Tibetan rights, was detained in Changsha on charges of “inciting separatism”.

Meanwhile, news emerged that Tibetan monk Dhargye, arrested in Lhasa in 2021, has never been released. Reports also pointed to mounting pressure on feminist networks and tighter control over religious leaders amid Beijing’s emphasis on political loyalty.

In Hong Kong, divisions between citizens and state power widened. The legislature rejected a same-sex marriage bill despite significant public backing, while Chief Executive John Lee vowed to intensify the national security crackdown. A man marking the Tiananmen crackdown anniversary with “6436” graffiti received a one-year probation order.

Beijing sought to manage global narratives. Foreign delegations were invited to Xinjiang in carefully choreographed visits aimed at downplaying accusations of Uyghur persecution. In Tibet, military veterans have been stationed in schools and kindergartens, raising fears of militarisation. Internationally, China renewed threats against Taiwan, invited Afghanistan to join the Belt and Road Initiative, and pledged deeper integration between Hong Kong and the mainland.

Global responses reflected growing unease. Taiwan issued a new civil defence handbook to prepare citizens for emergencies, while a U.S. congressional delegation visited China for the first time since 2019, focusing on military cooperation. Together, these developments paint a picture of a government using law, technology, and international pressure to consolidate power while silencing independent voices, such as Zhang Zhan, whose courage continues to symbolise the fight for truth in the face of authoritarian control. According to WUC, the smear campaign is designed to discredit prominent Uyghur leaders and weaken the global movement for Uyghur rights, which has gained significant momentum over the past year.

WUC officials emphasised that the accusations against Abbas are entirely baseless and fabricated. The organisation described them as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of a leader who has devoted decades of her life to defending Uyghurs against persecution by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

This is not the first time Abbas has faced such attacks; repeated smear campaigns against her reflect a broader pattern of disinformation aimed at silencing influential Uyghur voices.

The WUC also highlighted that its staff members have long been targets of threats, disinformation, deepfakes, and other smear tactics, often originating from anonymous sources. These campaigns include individually tailored posts and videos intended to intimidate staff and damage the personal reputations of both male and female members of the organisation.

“These allegations are completely false, lack any credible evidence, and come from sources that are untraceable or questionable,” the WUC stated, linking the attacks to documented CCP strategies aimed at spreading disinformation and weakening international support for Uyghur rights.

The organisation stressed that the smear campaign is politically motivated and serves as a distraction from the ongoing human rights abuses and crimes against humanity in East Turkistan.

The WUC reaffirmed its full support for Rushan Abbas, urging governments, media outlets, and civil society groups to recognise the attacks for what they are: deliberate attempts to silence Uyghur advocates and undermine the global movement for justice.

By publicly standing with Abbas, the WUC aims to highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Uyghur activists and call attention to the CCP’s systematic efforts to suppress dissent and distort narratives surrounding Uyghur persecution. (ANI)

UN urged to act as invasive alien weeds threaten rural livelihoods and food security

Geneva [Switzerland], September 24 (ANI): At the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the CEO of ECO FAWN Society, Sai Sampath Mettu, urged the UNHRC to take immediate and decisive action against invasive alien weeds, which are increasingly threatening agriculture, ecosystems, and the livelihoods of rural communities worldwide.

The appeal was made during an oral intervention delivered at the UNHRC session under the agenda “Interactive Dialogue with the Working Group on the Rights of Peasants.”

Sampath Mettu warned that invasive alien weeds are spreading rapidly across farmlands, causing significant soil degradation, reducing crop yields, and undermining biodiversity. Farmers are bearing the brunt of this ecological crisis, facing mounting challenges to secure their livelihoods and sustain food production.

He emphasised that these developments directly affect the human rights of peasants, including the right to food, the right to a healthy environment, and the right to sustainable economic activity.

During the session, he called on the UN to implement a series of urgent measures. These include the allocation of dedicated global funds to manage and control the spread of invasive alien weeds, as well as the appointment of a Special Procedure Mandate Holder to monitor, investigate, and advise on the human rights impacts of invasive species.

The Society also proposed the declaration of a “Decade of Action on Invasive Alien Weeds,” urging the integration of these efforts into the review frameworks of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he said that addressing this ecological and agricultural crisis is not optional but an essential responsibility for the international community.

Effective action, the organisation stated, is critical to safeguarding rural livelihoods, ensuring food security, and protecting the long-term health of ecosystems.

The intervention by Sampath Mettu has drawn renewed attention to the urgent need for global cooperation to tackle invasive alien weeds. (ANI)
