Hoping for India-Taiwan FTA; will encourage more Taiwanese firms to India: Chairman of Taiwan External Trade Development Council

New Delhi [India], September 26 (ANI): The Chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), James Chih-Fang Huang, expressed optimism about a prospective Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Taiwan, stating that it would significantly boost Taiwanese investments and business partnerships in the country.

Speaking to ANI on Thursday during the Taiwan Expo 2025 trade show at Bharat Mandapam, Huang highlighted India’s pivotal role in Taiwan’s export strategy.

He stated that India has emerged as one of Taiwan’s most important export destinations, with exports to India.

“We don’t do Taiwan exports in any country. We select the most important trading partners of Taiwan for Taiwan’s exports. India is the country to which we export the most, six times already… India is already the fourth largest economy in the world… It has huge potential in the future. Taiwanese companies are very interested in coming to India, whether to invest, trade, or establish partnerships with Indian counterparts. The bilateral trade between our two countries is expected to double over the next 5 to 6 years. We are hoping that India and Taiwan can sign a free trade agreement… It will encourage more Taiwanese companies to come to India for business and investment,” he stated.

Echoing this enthusiasm, Benjamin Lin, President of Delta Electronics India, a leading Taiwanese firm specialising in power and thermal management solutions, announced plans to expand the manufacturing footprint in the country.

“We have just announced our new manufacturing site in Tamil Nadu… For the business in India, we always follow the Government’s support… In certain situations, we also need to observe and wait for a favourable response. Maybe this will be fixed very soon,” he said.

Last week, Yu-Chi Chen, Executive Director of the Economic Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India, stated that bilateral trade between India and Taiwan is expected to reach a new record level in the 2025 calendar year.

Speaking with ANI on the sidelines of the Taiwan Expo 2025, Yu-Chi said, “In recent years, after the pandemic, the bilateral trade with India has been growing every year. In 2024, we are expected to achieve a record high in bilateral trade, surpassing USD 10 billion, between India and Taiwan. This year, from January to August, it is already USD 8 billion from the bilateral trade.”

She noted that Taiwan-India bilateral trade reached a record high of USD 10.6 billion in 2024, demonstrating strong momentum in economic cooperation.

“It (bilateral trade between India and Taiwan) is expected that this year, we might break the record again. It is quite positive,” she added. (ANI)

Cloud over Trump-Sharif meet, White House yet to release official photo; Pak PMO says meet closed to press

Washington, DC [US], September 26 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) hosted the Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Asim Munir at the Oval Office in Washington.

However, there appears to be a cloud over the meeting with the White House failing to release any official pictures or video of the meeting. The White House usually follows protocol by releasing pictures or showcasing live video of the President’s meeting with foreign counterparts.

Earlier in the day, US President had hosted the Turkish President Recep Erdogan, and that meeting was followed by a live joint briefing. The meeting between Sharif, Munir and Trump however was only posted by official Pakistan social media accounts.

According to the Pak PMO, US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were also present. It added that the meeting was held in a pleasant atmosphere.

The Pak PMO claimed that the meeting was closed to the press and was delayed by nearly 30 minutes while the US President signed executive orders.

The White House press pool pictures however did show Munir and Sharif waiting at the White House as the US President completed his engagements.

The visit, the first formal bilateral interaction between the two leaders, comes six years after former premier Imran Khan met Trump during the latter’s first term in July 2019.

Shehbaz Sharif is in the US to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Earlier, in a veiled reference to Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar while addressing the Second G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York on Thursday, underlined the need for global unity against terrorism and called for urgent reforms in multilateral institutions, including the United Nations.

“A persistent threat to development is that perennial disruptor of peace – terrorism. It is imperative that the world display neither tolerance nor accommodation to terrorist activities. Given the extensive networking amongst terrorists, those who act against them on any front render a larger service to the international community as a whole,” Jaishankar said without naming Pakistan.

Meanwhile, South Asia analyst Michael Kugelman pointed out that the resurgence of US-Pakistan ties has emerged as a significant “tension point” in India-US relations, particularly in light of recent geopolitical frictions between Washington and New Delhi.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Kugelman noted that while India has long accepted the US-Pakistan friendship, including military aspects, the rapid resurgence has amplified existing frictions.

“As we know, India quite some time ago accepted the fact that the US and Pakistan would have a friendly relationship, including a friendly military relationship. This resurgence in US-Pakistan ties has become a tension point in US-India relations, just because there are so many other bad things happening in US-India relations and also the US-Pakistan relationship has really strengthened very quickly in very big ways,” Kugelman said. "We need the leadership India brings, we need Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam": UN Resident Coordinator Shombi Sharp

New York [US], September 26 (ANI): United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, Shombi Sharp, praised India’s rising influence on the global stage, commending its pivotal role in geopolitics, development, and peacekeeping.

He highlighted India’s commitment to the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, the world as one family, as essential in addressing today’s global challenges.

Speaking to ANI, Sharp said, “India is playing an increasingly absolutely critical role in the geopolitical space and in the development space.”

He praised India’s unique position as a global leader capable of bridging cutting-edge innovation and grassroots development. “India’s a country that lands on the moon and is also developing new ways to lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, which are very relevant for developing countries of the Global South,” he noted.

“India is looking at how to solve the challenges, especially for those developing countries,” he added.

He also pointed out that India is making strides in renewable energy and food security–fields where it is innovating at an extraordinary pace.

Sharp pointed out India’s advancements in sectors such as renewable energy and food security, both of which are critical to addressing global climate and hunger challenges. “India is innovating and investing in renewable energy like perhaps no other country at the current moment, and food security as well,” he affirmed.

Sharp emphasised the close collaboration between India and the UN in counterterrorism efforts, underscoring the importance of India’s leadership in these global challenges. “India and the UN have worked together very closely on counter terrorism measures.”

“We need the kind of leadership that India brings. We need Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. We need that spirit of the world as one family,” he said, invoking the Indian philosophy that advocates for global unity,” he added.

On India’s role in global peacekeeping, Sharp referenced a statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who affirmed India’s commitment to peace. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that India is very much invested in being a force for peace. We see India’s powerful role in peace and security,” Sharp said.

“India is the largest contributor of troops, both armed and civilian personnel, to UN peacekeeping since its inception,” he added.

Sharp also referred to comments by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who highlighted the interconnectedness of peace and development. “Jaishankar said that it’s a combination of peace and development. These are two sides of the same coin, and India’s contributions to international peace and development, South-South cooperation, and as a voice for the Global South are vitally important to help bring about conditions for peace globally,” Sharp stated.

Further, the UN Resident Coordinator in India addressed key points made by Jaishankar during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where the EAM called for a balanced approach to peace and development.

Sharp noted, “S Jaishankar touched some very important issues. First of all, he said that you cannot have peace without development, you cannot have development without peace.”

“So we have to be looking at these two in a very balanced way, and he called out some of the double standards that we see in the world,” he added.

Sharp praised Jaishankar’s remarks, saying that “he pointed out that the global South is actually paying the highest price for many of the crises we’re facing today, the conflicts raging from Ukraine, Palestine and Sudan…He called for an equitable approach and climate justice. These are very balanced remarks.” (ANI)

"We must be a special team": Pakistan's captain Salman Agha praises team effort after win over Bangladesh

Dubai [UAE], September 26 (ANI): After clinical performances that propelled Pakistan into the final of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, culminating in an 11-run victory over Bangladesh in their final Super Four clash on Thursday, Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha believed that winning such games proves they are a special team.

With this win, Pakistan concluded their Super Four campaign with two wins and one loss, placing them second on the points table.

India, who sit atop the standings with two wins, will take on Sri Lanka in their final Super Four match on Friday, aiming to remain undefeated.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, finished third with one win and two losses, giving them two points. Sri Lanka has been eliminated, having lost both their games, and is in the bottom spot.

Pakistan will face its arch-rivals, India, for the first time in the history of the tournament, across both ODI and T20I editions.

“If you win these kinds of games, then we must be a special team. Everyone played really well. There is some room for improvement in batting. But we will work on that. Shaheen is a special player. He does what the team needs from him. Very happy for him. We were 15 runs short. The way we bowled up front, we will create pressure. We bowled well with the new ball. More often than not, you will win games if you bowl like this. We have been fielding well. Shane has been working hard for us. We have been having extra sessions. Mike Hesson said if you can’t field, you won’t be on the team. We are a good enough team to beat anyone. We will come back on Sunday and try and do that,” Salman Ali Agha said after the match.

Player of the Match, Shaheen Afridi, attributed his success to hard work on his slower ball, which paid off during the game. In a heartfelt gesture, Afridi dedicated his award to his wife and son.

“I will dedicate this award to my beautiful wife and son, who are here. You need early breakthroughs. Those three overs made the difference in the power play. I was working on the slower ball. It came out well in the main time. The team decided I would go with Nawaz and Faheem behind me. I got two sixes, and that gave us the momentum,” Shaheen Afridi said.

During a chase of 136 runs, Bangladesh lost three wickets for 44 runs within the powerplay itself, with Shaheen (3/17 in four overs) proving to be destructive in his pairing with Rauf (3/33 in four overs).

Bangladesh’s stand in captain Jaker Ali attributed the team’s defeat to their batting performance, acknowledging it as the decisive factor in the loss.

As a batting unit, last two games, we lost it. We did good work with the bowling unit. Yesterday, the batting cost us the game. I tried to take those chances. I tried to adjust to the captaincy. Our bowlers, Rishad and then Saif, with the bat. Unfortunately, we didn’t support Saif much,” Jaker Ali said.

Shamim Hossain (30 in 25 balls, with two sixes) tried to hold the innings together, but a relentless Pakistan reduced them to 124/9, with Rishad Hossain (16* in 11 balls, with two fours and a six) and Mustafizur Rahman (6* in four balls, with a four) failing to get their team to the finishing line.

Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu represents India at ICAO General Assembly in Montreal

Montreal [Canada], September 26 (ANI): Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu represented India at the 42nd General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) held in Montreal, Canada.

In a post on social media platform X, the minister said he met with ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano and Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar during the assembly.

“Proud to be representing India at the 42nd General Assembly of ICAO at Montreal, Canada. Had the pleasure of meeting @icao Council President Mr Salvatore Sciacchitano and Secretary General Mr Juan Carlos Salaza. @JCS_ICAO,” he wrote on X.

During the discussions, Naidu highlighted the rapid expansion and exponential growth of India’s aviation sector. He expressed his appreciation for ICAO’s continued support and cooperation in strengthening India’s position in global civil aviation.

“I highlighted Indian aviation’s exponential growth and conveyed profound appreciation to ICAO for its constant support and cooperation. Also, discussed future prospects for India’s leadership in global aviation and in the ICAO Council and amongst all countries with whom India can share its technical and skilling expertise,” the post added on X.

He also referred to the ICAO’s global agenda, emphasising its theme, ‘No Country Left Behind,’ which aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guiding philosophy of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam, meaning ‘The world is one family.’

“The ICAO’s theme of ‘No Country Left Behind’ aptly complements Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s guiding principle of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam and India is totally committed to this cause,” Naidu added.

The minister further underlined India’s priorities in sustainability and inclusivity within the aviation sector. “I also emphasised to the high offices of ICAO, the firm steps India is taking on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and for larger participation of Women in Aviation, to make it more gender inclusive,” he said.

In a subsequent post, the Union Civil Aviation Minister announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and ICAO during the General Assembly.

The MoU is aimed at facilitating a technical study led by ICAO, which will advise and recommend strategic measures to boost the growth of Indian aviation.

“Happy to share that, on the sidelines of the 42nd ICAO General Assembly, Airports Authority of India and ICAO have signed an MoU for conducting a @ICAO-led technical study to advise and recommend @AAI_Official in particular and Indian Aviation in general.” Naidu wrote.

The minister explained that the study will focus on ensuring that airport growth in India is harmonised with its surrounding environments. It will also pave the way for developing airports as centres of economic development through the creation of aerotropolis or aerocity models.

“The study aims to focus on making airports’ growth in India more harmonious with their surroundings, paving the way for establishing airports as centres of economic development through the creation of aerotropolis/aerocity,” the minister explained. (ANI)

India strengthens ties with SICA countries, focuses on trade and digital payments: EAM

New York [US], September 26 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted India’s deepening engagement with the countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) and underscored key areas of collaboration, including trade and digital payments, during the India-SICA Foreign Minister’s Meeting.

Speaking at the India-SICA Foreign Minister’s Meeting in New York, Jaishankar expressed optimism about the growing interest of Indian companies to invest in SICA economies, especially in agriculture, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and information technology sectors.

He noted, “We are very encouraged by the growing interest of Indian companies to invest in SICA countries, in SICA economies, particularly in agriculture, in renewable energy, in pharmaceuticals, and in IT.”

The Minister underscored India’s commitment to fostering closer economic ties with SICA countries and emphasised collaboration in key sectors vital for sustainable growth in the region.

A significant part of India’s digital transformation has been the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a system that has revolutionised cashless transactions. “At the same time, our payments, digital payments interface, called the UPI, we’ve actually had great success in ensuring a seamless, real-time, and secure method of transferring funds. Today, more than half of the world’s cashless payments take place in India because of this,” Jaishankar remarked.

He further added that UPI, being a low-cost, high-efficiency system, could be adapted to the economies of SICA countries to enhance their payment ecosystems. “We would be very happy to work with SICA partners to see how this digital payments system can be applied to your economies if there is such interest,” he said.

Over the past decade, India’s relations with SICA countries have seen a marked improvement, and Jaishankar acknowledged this growing cooperation.

“Over the past decade, India’s engagement with SICA has deepened significantly. We have had high-level visits that demonstrate a commitment to closer ties with Central America,” he said.

While acknowledging the challenges of the current geopolitical and economic climate, Jaishankar expressed his desire to visit the region in the near future.

He mentioned, “I have myself been to Panama and the Dominican Republic. I intended to visit the region this year. Unfortunately, a lot of our attention has gone to trade-related concerns, which are understandable in the current situation. But I certainly look forward to doing so next year.”

He also referred to the visits of his deputy, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, to multiple SICA countries, including the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, and Nicaragua, reflecting India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

“But my deputy, Pabitra Margherita, has visited the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, and Nicaragua in the last two years…I will be coming to you, too. These reflect our growing partnership and our commitment to advancing cooperation across multiple domains,” he said.

Futher, Jaishnkar highlighted that India views SICA as a key partner in the context of South-South cooperation, an approach that recognises the shared challenges faced by countries in the Global South.

Jaishankar pointed out, “India regards SICA as a key partner in the framework of South-South cooperation. Our countries face similar challenges of development, poverty alleviation, and climate change, and we can address these more effectively if we address them together.”

He described the meeting as an “opportunity to exchange perspectives on development.”

“Today’s meeting gives us an opportunity to exchange perspectives on our development, on our view of the world and on the possibility of cooperation between us,” he affirmed.

The minister also referred to the Mechanism for Political Dialogue and Cooperation, established in 2023, which reinforced the mutual desire to deepen collaboration. “At our last meeting of the Mechanism for Political Dialogue and Cooperation, which was held in Panama City in April 2023, we reaffirmed the value of our partnership and agreed on the need to deepen cooperation,” Jaishankar said.

“Good to meet FM @javierachapmaof Panama on the sidelines of the India-SICA FMM. Discussed our bilateral ties and cooperation in multilateral fora,” Jaishankar wrote on X.

Sharing another post, Jaishankar wrote, “Delighted to co-host the India-SICA Foreign Minister’s Meeting along with FM @javierachapma of Panama in New York today.”

Earlier, Jaishankar also spoke at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted by South Africa on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80).

He stressed the responsibility of G20 members to strengthen global stability through dialogue, diplomacy, and combating terrorism, alongside enhancing energy and economic security.

“Highlighted that in a politically & economically volatile international situation, G20 members have a particular responsibility to strengthen its stability and give it a more positive direction,” Jaishankar wrote on X.

“Can be best done by: undertaking dialogue and diplomacy, firmly combating terrorism and appreciating the need for stronger energy and economic security,” the post added. (ANI)

"Will become backbone of economy," J&K LG Manoj Sinha praises real estate's growth

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 25 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha praised the growth of the real estate sector over the decades in the AIFORERA Governing Council Meeting on Thursday.

In the meeting, Sinha emphasised that India’s real estate sector will become the backbone of the economy in the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. The sector is expected to contribute 18% to the country’s GDP.

“The way the real estate sector has progressed in the past few decades, it can be said that this sector will become the backbone of the economy in the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and will potentially contribute to the GDP by 18%…” said the Lt governor.

The Jammu and Kashmir LG also stated that there will be significant growth in the sector in the coming times.

“And it is believed by the consultancy firms that there will be huge growth in the sector in the coming times…” added Sinha.

Meanwhile, the Lieutenant Governor of the union territory also attended the launch of the Atal Sarthi Programme of the Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, which was held at the Convocation Complex of the University of Kashmir.

During the programme, Sinha emphasised that Atal Tinkering Labs are becoming a new means of exploring new discoveries and enhancing self-confidence among youth.

“Atal Tinkering Labs are providing innovation and technology to the knowledge power… It is becoming a means of exploring new discoveries and self-confidence for the youth…” said Manoj Sinha.

Meanwhile, an Indo-Australian delegation led by Sajid N. Saiyed, Chairman of the Bharat CSR Network met Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and presented a series of proposed Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at sustainable development in the region.

During the meeting, the delegation proposed several impactful projects for Jammu and Kashmir, including the establishment of ten Smart Villages, the setting up of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Labs, a Waste-to-Wealth programme to promote sustainability, Water Remediation Projects, the construction of Community Centres, and rehabilitation support for flood victims, as per an official release. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha welcomed the proposals and lauded the delegation’s commitment to community empowerment and inclusive development. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], September 25 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swadeshi’ remarks on Thursday.

Speaking to ANI, Shrinate stated that PM Narendra Modi promotes Swadeshi, yet most of his items are made abroad.

“PM Narendra Modi talks about Swadeshi, but from top to bottom, he is immersed in foreign things. If we talk about his spectacles, he is of Italian-Bulgarian descent. His pen is Germany’s Mobla, his watch is Swiss Mavado, and his shoes are Kenneth Cole’s from America. The vehicles in which he drives are not Indian vehicles; they are BMW and Mercedes. The aircraft in which he flies is American,” said Shrinate.

The Congress leader claimed that all the children of PM Modi’s ministers are studying in prominent foreign universities and questioned why the government does not call them back to the country.

“There is another limit to hypocrisy, and that limit is that all the people around Modi, all his ministers, all their children study in big foreign universities, they are settled there, they are making big money there. Call all of them back to India. Tell them to come to India and cooperate in Swadeshi,” said Shrinate.

Moreover, Shrinate also asserted that all the ministers are settled in foreign countries.

“All the people around you are settled in foreign countries. The way you dress, the way you fly, the things you use are all foreign. And you talk about Swadeshi. Talking about Swadeshi looks very bad from your mouth, and your own dialogue comes. Remember, there is a limit to hypocrisy, Mr Modi,” said Shrinate.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the need to enhance indigenous production across various sectors. He stated that the government is fully committed to supporting all stakeholders in this effort. PM Modi highlighted that India must prioritise becoming a ‘Swadeshi’ economy as it moves forward on its path of development.

“The government is putting a strong emphasis on Make in India manufacturing. We want everything from chip to ship to be manufactured in India; for this, we are focusing on your ease of doing business. The government abolished more than 40,000 compliances, and more than a thousand laws were decriminalised. We are standing with you shoulder-to-shoulder,” said PM Modi while addressing the business fraternity and the traders present at the event.

Addressing a gathering at the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show-2025, he further demanded that there should be no compromise on the products being produced indigenously. “Every citizen is adopting Swadeshi, ‘Garv se kaho hum swadeshi hai’, our traders will have to proudly adopt this mantra.” (ANI)

"Trying to find qualities of a leader in a lot of people": Agarkar clears air on Shreyas Iyer

New Delhi [India], September 25 (ANI): India’s Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has clarified that while Shreyas Iyer remains an important figure in India’s white-ball setup, his absence from red-ball cricket continues due to fitness reasons.

Iyer will lead India A against Australia A before heading into the ODI series in Australia.

“I don’t think we’ve discussed the 50-over format yet. At the moment, we have to pick the team for these two Test matches (against West Indies),” Agarkar said.

“Shreyas is a senior player. He obviously leads his franchise in IPL (Indian Premier League) cricket. He’s one of the senior guys. He was captain for India A as well. It’s not like because of that we are looking at him as a Test captain. We’re trying to find qualities of a leader in a lot of people and India A gives us an opportunity to see if somebody has that ability.”

“Unfortunately, I think the statement was put out already, with regards to his fitness in terms of red-ball cricket, he won’t be available…. and he’s been a key player in one-day cricket over the last few years,” he added.

Shreyas has conveyed to the BCCI that he has taken a decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience and work on his overall fitness, as per the BCCI media advisory.

As a result, the selectors did not consider him for the Rest of India squad for the upcoming Irani Cup against Vidarbha. However, Iyer will continue to lead the India A side in the three-match one-day series against Australia A, which begins on September 30 in Kanpur.

Iyer had low scores while playing in the red-ball match against Australia A and against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final.

“He gets three games before we go to Australia, and more than anything, we want him playing and playing well because he becomes a key member in the one-day squad,” Agarkar added. (ANI)
