San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy continues to be hindered by a painful turf toe injury but remains hopeful he will be on the field when his team battles the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night in Inglewood, Calif. The NFC West rivals have 3-1 records as part of a three-way tie for first place with the Seattle Seahawks, and Purdy is feeling the urgency to play in the division showdown. "If I can play this game, I'm going to play," Purdy said on Tuesday. "Obviously, I want to get right and get healthy and everything, but we need to win this game against the Rams, so that's how I'm looking at it." Purdy didn't participate in the team's Tuesday walkthrough, and the team will divulge his official status on Wednesday. Purdy was initially hurt during San Francisco's Week 1 victory over the Seahawks and missed the next two games. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said pain tolerance is only part of the decision regarding Purdy. "It will come down to whether we feel he can play to 100 percent of his ability and if we feel that he can protect himself," Shanahan said. In a complaint filed in Los Angeles federal court, the Department of Justice said the sheriff's department has systematically denied Californians' Second Amendment rights through a "deliberate pattern of unconscionable delay." According to the Justice Department, license applications in Los Angeles County typically sit nine months before being reviewed, and some applicants wait more than two years before being interviewed. "The Second Amendment protects the fundamental constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to bear arms," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. "Los Angeles County may not like that right, but the Constitution does not allow them to infringe upon it," she added. Sheriff Robert Luna was also named as a defendant. In a statement on Tuesday night, the sheriff's department said it respected the Second Amendment, and believed that despite "significant staffing shortages" its practices haven't deprived individuals of their rights. The department said it has issued more than 5,000 concealed carry permits in 2025, including 2,722 new applications, and is issuing permits "at a significantly increased rate, contrary to the statistics and information cited" in the complaint. LONG WAITS While Republican President Donald Trump's administration is regularly at odds with California officials and has a broad view of Second Amendment gun rights, Tuesday's lawsuit focuses more on bureaucratic issues than on policy differences. According to the complaint, the Los Angeles sheriff's department received 3,982 applications for new concealed carry licenses between January 2024 and March 2025 but approved just two. Los Angeles County had about 9.7 million people in 2023. The complaint also said the average wait time to start processing applications is 281 days, violating a California law requiring initial reviews within 90 days. Some applications sit as long as 1,030 days, or about 34 months, it said. Lawyers in the Justice Department's civil rights division and the office of U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli in Los Angeles began investigating the sheriff's department in March. Their lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction requiring the sheriff's department to issue concealed carry licenses in a timely manner, and in compliance with the law. The case is U.S. v. (Updates death toll, adds reports of damage from disaster and local officials) * Officials warn death toll may rise as rescuers access collapsed buildings * San Remigio declared state of calamity, appeals for aid * No tsunami threat, but strong aftershocks recorded MANILA, Oct 1 (Reuters) – The death toll from a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake in the central Philippines has risen to 27 with more than 140 people injured, and officials on Wednesday warned the numbers could climb further as rescuers access collapsed buildings. The earthquake struck off the coast of Bogo City in Cebu province in the central Visayas region just before 10 p.m. (1400 GMT) on Tuesday, causing power outages and bringing down buildings, including a church that was more than 100 years old. Cebu province, one of the Philippines' most popular tourist destinations, is home to 3.4 million people. Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country's second busiest gateway, remained operational. The quake struck hardest in northern Cebu, including San Remigio, which was placed under a state of calamity to facilitate response and relief efforts. Alfie Reynes, vice mayor of San Remigio, appealed for food and water for evacuees, as well as heavy equipment to aid search and rescue workers. "It is raining heavily and there is no electricity so we really need help, especially in the northern part because there's a scarcity of water after supply lines were damaged by the earthquake," Reynes told DZMM radio. In the neighbouring city of Bogo, near the epicenter of the quake, hospital patients were evacuated and strong aftershocks forced many residents to stay in evacuation centres and out on the streets. Earthquake monitoring agencies put the quake's depth at around 10 km (6.2 miles) and recorded multiple aftershocks, the strongest having a magnitude of 6. There was no tsunami threat following the quake. The Philippines lies in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. The country had two major earthquakes in January, with no casualties reported. In 2023, a 6.7 magnitude offshore earthquake killed eight people.
