TOKYO, Sept 30 (Reuters) – World number one Carlos Alcaraz wore down Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-4 in the Japan Open final on Tuesday to win his eighth title of a spectacular year and further cement his status as a dominant force in the men's game. Victory also earned Alcaraz revenge for a stunning loss to Fritz at the Laver Cup in San Francisco this month, the Spaniard's first defeat by the American in four clashes, which came shortly after his triumphant U.S. Open campaign. Pandora's share price fell 2% by 0931 GMT following the announcement and are down 37% year-to-date as the Danish company struggles with weak European sales, rising commodity prices and U.S. import tariffs. De Pablos-Barbier, formerly CEO of LVMH's champagne brand Moet & Chandon, was hired in November last year as a potential future leader of the group, and was the strongest candidate for CEO, Pandora said in a statement. Investors had not expected her to take the helm so soon. De Pablos-Barbier said she would continue Lacik's long-term strategy of building the company beyond its traditional focus on bracelets to make it a full jewellery brand. "We have to stay true to what Pandora is. Pandora is an accessible luxury brand," de Pablos-Barbier told Reuters. WEAK EUROPEAN DEMAND Lacik's departure is the latest in a series of CEO exits this year at European retail and consumer brands, which included Francois-Henri Pinault at Gucci owner Kering, Laurent Freixe at Nestle and Debra Crew at Diageo. De Pablos-Barbier has enjoyed a 30-year career in luxury and consumer goods. Other companies she has worked at include Mars Wrigley, Lacoste and jeweller Boucheron. "She is the right person to lead our continued growth, and I am pleased that we can maintain strategic focus and momentum during this smooth and orderly leadership transition," Pandora Chair Peter Ruzicka said. Pandora's share price tripled during Lacik's tenure as CEO, which began in 2019. BEIJING, Sept 30 (Reuters) – Artificial superintelligence may be available by 2030, but its capabilities are only likely to surpass humans in some aspects, the head of one of China's hottest AI startups said on Tuesday. The AI industry is abuzz with speculation about when the technology will overtake human intelligence. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted last week that ASI could arrive by the end of the decade, while SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son speculated last year it could exist by 2035. Zhang Peng, the CEO of Zhipu AI, said on Tuesday the concept was too vague to pin down to a specific timeline. SURPASS IN PART, FALL SHORT IN MANY "People reach different conclusions when discussing this issue," he said, as the company released its latest large language model, GLM-4.6. "I think achieving or exceeding human intelligence levels by 2030 might mean surpassing humans in one or several aspects, but likely still falling far short in many areas." Founded in 2019 as a Tsinghua University spinoff, Zhipu AI has emerged as a frontrunner in China's AI race and filed documents in April indicating plans to list on mainland Chinese markets. In June, it was singled out by OpenAI as a fast-rising rival and characterised as an extension of Beijing's efforts to push Chinese-developed AI abroad. Zhang said the company was "flattered" but its overseas expansion was "normal business". Zhang said overseas revenue had begun gaining traction, but acknowledged the company would not compete directly with U.S. models in consumer subscriptions yet. BEIJING, Sept 30 (Reuters) – China's state news agency said on Tuesday some automakers were "drastically" inflating pre-sale orders, warning such a practice can mislead consumers and investors and harm the industry's future. The Xinhua Daily Telegraph, a newspaper published by Xinhua, didn't name any of the automakers but alleged some asked employees to place refundable deposits to create an illusion of strong pre-sale performance while some had engaged with "a grey industry chain" offering the order-padding services. The orders reported by the automakers lack oversight from third-party agencies and usually far exceed their actual deliveries, it said. "Such inflated orders are raising alarm within the industry," the newspaper said, adding the practice has drawn regulatory attention. China's industry ministry said in September it would launch a three-month campaign to crack down on false marketing and other online irregularities in the automotive sector. INFLATING THE NUMBERS The Xinhua article followed a commentary from the official Economic Daily on Saturday, which also condemned the order padding by automakers without naming. Economic Daily said this practice originally came from the smartphone industry as companies used to race to claim tens of thousands or even millions of pre-orders that were not verifiable. "Nowadays, it has become more of a marketing tactic for automakers to boast about their order numbers, which is detrimental to matching production and sales," Nio CEO William Li told reporters earlier this month, adding that his company didn't inflate such numbers. The criticism follows other evidence of sales inflation being carried out in response to a bruising price war in the world's largest auto market. Reuters has reported on how Chinese automakers and dealers have used an insurance tactic to inflate car sales. Another method is to ship new cars overseas as used, which has been supported by local governments keen to boost economic performance. The unusual practices are rooted in China's "production-oriented” industrial model as industry policy created an oversupply of cars, a Reuters investigation showed. China's car sales grew by 9.9% to 14.9 million units in the first eight months of 2025, industry data showed. China Passenger Car Association noted that China accounted for 38% of the total car sales globally in August thanks to government subsidies.
