By 1429 GMT, the rand was trading at 17.2825 against the dollar, up about 0.3% from Friday's close. Gold surged above the key $3,800-per-ounce level for the first time on Monday as investors flocked to the safe-haven asset on U.S. rate cut expectations this year. The dollar last traded about 0.2% weaker against a basket of currencies. USD/ The domestic economic calendar will feature a central bank report on economic trends in the second quarter and statistics agency data on formal sector employment on Tuesday. Money supply, private sector credit, the trade balance and budget balance figures are also expected on the same day. Investor attention later in the week will shift towards vehicle sales numbers, an Absa purchasing managers' index and S&P Global whole-economy PMI, which will shed light on the shape of the country's manufacturing sector and business conditions respectively. On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was up 0.8%. South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was slightly stronger as the yield fell 1 basis point to 9.155%. (Recasts with more details) CAIRO, Sept 29 (Reuters) – British maritime security firm Ambrey said on Monday that a Netherlands-flagged general cargo ship reportedly came under attack 120 nautical miles southeast of Yemen's port city of Aden. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also said that military authorities reported that a vessel, 128 nautical miles off Aden, had been hit by an unknown projectile and was reported to be on fire. The UKMTO and Ambrey said they received reports of smoke in the vicinity of the vessel, with the UKMTO saying the ship's master reported witnessing a splash in the distance. At the time of the attack, the vessel was not transmitting its automatic identification system (AIS), Ambrey added. The vessel was previously targeted on September 23 on its way to Djibouti, according to Ambrey. The UKMTO said on September 23 that a vessel reported a splash and the sound of an explosion in its vicinity 120 nautical miles (222 km) east of Aden. Both firms did not identify the party responsible. It was not immediately clear if the reported attack was carried out by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, who had launched numerous attacks on vessels in the Red Sea since 2023 that they deem to be linked with Israel in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in Israel's war on Gaza. Viljoen's appointment coincides with the abrupt resignation of Mark Bristow as CEO of rival Barrick Mining earlier in the day. Shareholders are pressing for stronger returns to match successive all-time highs in the gold price, even as companies grapple with rising costs, resource nationalism and growing expectations to align with the energy transition. Palmer will step down as Newmont's top boss on December 31 and serve as a strategic adviser until his retirement in March next year. He joined Newmont in 2014 and became its chief operating officer in 2016 before being appointed as CEO in 2019. Sept 29 (Reuters) – Canadian carrier WestJet said on Monday the personal information of some passengers was exposed in a cybersecurity breach earlier this year, though no payment data was compromised. The airline said it detected suspicious activity on June 13 and later determined that a "sophisticated, criminal third party" had gained unauthorized access to its systems. The aviation industry's growing dependence on complex digital systems and vast stores of passenger data has made it an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals. Earlier this month, a ransomware attack on Collins Aerospace, a unit of RTX, disrupted operations across major European airports, crippling check-in and baggage systems at popular hubs such as London's Heathrow and Berlin. WestJet said the type of data exposed in the breach varied but could include names, contact details, travel information and documents tied to reservations. However, no credit card and debit card numbers, expiration dates and CVV numbers were obtained during the breach. In a notice to U.S. residents on Monday, the carrier said it had worked closely with law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.
