The Phoenix Mercury will be without All-Star forward Satou Sabally when they attempt to avoid being swept by the Las Vegas Aces on Friday in the WNBA Finals. The Mercury announced Thursday that Sabally has been diagnosed with a concussion and ruled out for Game 4 in Phoenix in the best-of-seven series. Sabally was injured when she fell while going for a rebound and her head hit the leg of the Aces' Kierstan Bell with 4:26 left in the fourth quarter of Game 3 on Wednesday. Lynch, Luc Cohen and Andrew Goudsward Oct 9 (Reuters) – New York Attorney General Letitia James, a longtime foe of President Donald Trump, was indicted on criminal charges including bank fraud on Thursday, the Justice Department said, as the administration seeks to use government power against those who have pursued investigations into him or publicly resisted his agenda. Lindsey Halligan, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said James had been indicted on one count of bank fraud and one count of making a false statement to a lending institution. The Justice Department has been probing mortgage fraud allegations against her. "The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public's trust," Halligan said. Each count is punishable by up to 30 years in prison, but should James be convicted, any sentence would be determined by a judge. Neither James' lawyers nor representatives of her office immediately responded to requests for comment. Trump, a Republican who campaigned for reelection in part on a vow of retribution after facing a slew of legal woes since his first term in the White House ended in 2021, has repeatedly assailed James on social media and at political rallies as a partisan enemy. New York state Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, said in a post on X, "What we're seeing today is nothing less than the weaponization of the Justice Department to punish those who hold the powerful accountable." INDICTMENT FOLLOWS CHARGES AGAINST COMEY The indictment of James comes after a grand jury in Virginia on September 25 indicted former FBI Director James Comey on charges of making false statements and obstructing a congressional investigation. Comey pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. Trump has regularly assailed Comey's handling of the FBI investigation that detailed contacts between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign. Both indictments come after Trump, in a September 20 social media post addressed to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, said James, Comey, and U.S. Senator Adam Schiff were "guilty as hell." The indictments against James and Comey were both brought by Halligan, who was installed last month as the top federal prosecutor in Alexandria, Virginia. Her predecessor, Erik Siebert, resigned on September 19, hours after Trump told reporters, "I want him out." Siebert believed the evidence against Comey and James was weak, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters at the time. As with the Comey case, Halligan presented the evidence against James to the grand jury by herself, without support from career prosecutors in the office, a person familiar with the matter said. Prosecutors in the office have previously expressed concerns about the strength of the evidence against her, Reuters previously reported. Comey's lawyers are expected to argue Halligan was unlawfully appointed as U.S. attorney. If that motion is successful, it could complicate the cases against Comey and James down the road. James is one of several Democratic state attorneys general who have sued to block Trump administration actions. She is best known for bringing a civil fraud case against Trump and his family real estate company in 2022. The case resulted in a $454.2 million penalty against Trump after a judge found he fraudulently overstated his net worth to dupe lenders. A New York state appeals court in August threw out the penalty, which had grown to more than a half-billion dollars with interest, but upheld the trial judge's finding that Trump was liable for fraud. Both Trump and James' office are appealing to the state's highest court. Trump denied wrongdoing. He has accused James' office of bringing the case against him for political reasons. JAMES' LAWYER HAS DENIED ALLEGATIONS The Justice Department's mortgage fraud probe into James was opened after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte, a Trump appointee, sent a letter to the U.S. Justice Department alleging James "falsified records" to obtain favorable loans on homes she purchased in Virginia and Brooklyn. In his referral letter, Pulte wrote that James indicated in a mortgage application that a Virginia property she was buying in 2023 would be her primary residence, even though she lived in New York. James' lawyer Abbe Lowell has said that she mistakenly stated that the property would be a primary residence. He said she made it clear in other documents that it would not be her primary residence, and that her broker understood that. The Justice Department, after receiving referrals from Pulte, has also opened mortgage fraud probes into Schiff, a Democrat who led the House of Representatives' inquiry that led to Trump's impeachment in 2019, and Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden. Neither Schiff nor Cook has been charged with a crime, and they both deny wrongdoing. Loans for primary residences can carry lower rates than mortgages on investment properties or second homes, which banks consider riskier. Tua Tagovailoa has been dealing with hip and left thumb injuries this week, but the Miami Dolphins aren't worried about his availability for Week 6. Tagovailoa was listed as limited on Wednesday's injury report, and Thursday's had yet to be published as of 5:15 p.m. local time. But Miami offensive coordinator Frank Smith downplayed his quarterback's health concerns before the Dolphins play the Los Angeles Chargers. "The U.S. Treasury is prepared, immediately, to take whatever exceptional measures are warranted to provide stability to markets," Bessent said in a post on X. Argentina's 2035 bond rose 4.6 cents to trade at 60.58 cents on the dollar while the peso closed at 1,418 per dollar, up 0.8% on the day after falling 3% earlier. Local stocks , which touched a 2025 low days before Bessent's initial support pledge last month, rose 5.3% Thursday. Bessent issued his statement at the end of four days of meetings with Argentine Finance Minister Luis Caputo that also involved officials from the International Monetary Fund. In April, the IMF granted Argentina a new $20 billion loan program. Bessent said Caputo had coordinated closely with the IMF on Argentina's reform commitments, adding: "Argentina’s policies, when anchored on fiscal discipline, are sound. Its exchange rate band remains fit for purpose." A spokesperson for the IMF could not immediately be reached for comment on the U.S. actions. "Argentina faces a moment of acute illiquidity," Bessent said in his post. "The international community – including @IMFNews – is unified behind Argentina and its prudent fiscal strategy, but only the United States can act swiftly. And act we will. To that end, we directly purchased Argentine pesos." A U.S. Treasury spokesperson declined to provide any further details, including on the amount of pesos purchased and how the $20 billion currency swap line would be structured. BACKSTOP FOR MILEI Previously, Bessent had pledged the use of the Treasury's $221 billion Exchange Stabilization Fund and its holdings of IMF reserve assets known as Special Drawing Rights to support Argentina. The backstop is partly aimed at giving Argentina's right wing president, Javier Milei, a boost in Argentina's October 26 mid-term legislative elections. His party wants to strengthen its minority position to solidify his agenda to cut government spending and boost private-sector investment. Argentine lawmakers are working to limit what the president can do via decrees, raising the stakes for Milei's party performance in the midterms. Bessent called the success of Milei's reforms of "systemic importance," to the U.S. by helping to anchor a prosperous Western Hemisphere. HEMISPHERE OF ECONOMIC FREEDOM Milei, who is due to meet Trump next week during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Washington, thanked Bessent and President Donald Trump in a message on X. "Together, as the closest of allies, we will make a hemisphere of economic freedom and prosperity. We will work hard every day to provide opportunity for our people," Milei wrote. Investors greeted the intervention with a sigh of relief. Eduardo Ordonez Bueso, emerging markets debt portfolio manager at BankInvest, said markets had been hungry for details of Bessent's support pledge and had been challenging peso valuations. "If they hadn't come through with a promise they made…we would be talking about a complete collapse of Argentina," he said.
