MILWAUKEE — The well-rested Milwaukee Brewers will turn to ace right-hander Freddy Peralta as they look to snap their playoff drought when they host the archrival Chicago Cubs on Saturday in the opener of the National League Division Series. Former Brewers manager Craig Counsell led the Cubs to a 3-1 victory over San Diego on Thursday in the decisive third game of the wild-card round. It marked Chicago's first playoff series win since 2017. Counsell did not name a Game 1 starter Friday afternoon, saying the Cubs had a couple plans and would make a call after Friday's workout. Peralta (17-6, 2.70 ERA), who led the National League in victories, likely will oppose either right-hander Colin Rea (11-7, 3.95 ERA) or right-hander Javier Assad (4-1, 3.65 ERA) in the first playoff meeting between the Central Division rivals, separated by about 90 miles. "At least from my perspective, kind of being on both sides of it, I think the regular-season matchups are awesome," Counsell said of the rivalry Friday. "It's a lot of fun. A lot of times there's extra energy from fans, and there's fans from both teams in the building. That's always made it a lot of fun." With a first-round bye, the Brewers have been idle since Sunday after securing the No. 1 overall seed and home-field advantage for the entire postseason with a franchise-record 97 victories. Milwaukee is in the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons, but has lost in the wild card each of the last two seasons and has not won a playoff series since the NLDS in 2018. "They've had the best team in baseball this year," Counsell said Thursday of the Brewers. "They feel like they have a chance to play in the World Series with this team. … That's going to be as good as it gets." The Cubs won the regular-season series 7-6, including three of five in the last meeting in Aug. 18-21. Milwaukee was 6 1/2 games behind the Cubs on June 17, but surged to a nine-game lead by Aug. 15. Peralta has not pitched since Sunday in Milwaukee's 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds, when he allowed one run in a two-inning tune-up start. Peralta is 9-3 with a 3.21 ERA in 22 career appearances vs. the Cubs, including 17 starts. He was 3-1 with 3.43 ERA in four starts this against them this season, with 22 strikeouts and 10 walks. "They know me really well, and I know them, too. I know how special they are," Peralta said Friday. "… I think I just need to go out there and compete." Peralta, who made a career-high 33 starts this season, was 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA in five starts in September, but pitched past five innings just once. Rea, who pitched in 58 games (49 starts) with Milwaukee the previous two seasons, was effective down the stretch, going 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA in five outings (four starts) in September, and did not allow a home run in 27 1/3 innings. Assad, who was not on the wild-card roster, was 3-0 with a 3.18 ERA in four games (three starts) in September. Counsell, who managed the Brewers for nine seasons before joining the Cubs in 2024, is Milwaukee's winningest manager with 707 victories. Murphy was the Brewers' bench coach under Counsell, but also was Counsell's college coach at Notre Dame. "I think he probably feels the same way: This isn't about us," Murphy said Friday. "We'll compete, the teams will compete. I don't think it will change us." Murphy also said that injured right-hander Brandon Woodruff, out with a right lat strain, would not pitch in the NLDS. The emergency preparedness funds put on hold, called emergency management performance grants, help local communities to prepare for disasters. The website for FEMA, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, notes that the program was allocated $319.5 million for fiscal year 2025. The Trump administration has said it will not provide DHS funding to local governments unless they agree to support federal immigration enforcement, end programs that support diversity or that provide benefits to immigrants in the U.S. illegally, and comply with Trump's other executive orders. Trump ordered the Commerce Department in August to begin work on a new census that excludes immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally, revisiting a push from his first term that was later rejected by the courts. The Trump administration has maintained a hard-line immigration agenda, which was a key part of Trump's campaign promises, and engaged in a deportation drive that has drawn criticism from human rights advocates. Trump, who took office in January, has also said he wants to gut or abolish FEMA, and has frequently said he wanted states to have primary responsibility for responding to disasters. FEMA has raised concerns about what it calls inflated payments. An agency spokesperson said on Friday the emergency preparedness grant was awarded "based solely on population data." The spokesperson added that recent population shifts, including deportations of immigrants, had created a need for updated data to ensure equitable distribution. "This requirement applies to all states and is unrelated to recent federal court rulings," the spokesperson said. On Tuesday, a federal judge in Rhode Island temporarily blocked the Trump administration from cutting $233 million in grant funds for Democratic-led states. (Updates shares in paragraph 12 and adds background in paragraph 11) Oct 3 (Reuters) – Drugmaker AbbVie said on Friday it has lowered its annual profit forecast, after flagging an expected $2.7 billion charge related to in-process research and development (IPR&D) expenses in the third quarter. The Chicago-based company said in a regulatory filing that such expenses may arise from collaborations, licensing deals or asset buys, but are not forecast due to uncertainty around timing and occurrence. It did not specify how the expense was incurred. Including the third-quarter charge, AbbVie now expects full-year adjusted earnings per share between $10.38 and $10.58, compared with the prior range of $11.88 to $12.08. Analysts were expecting full-year adjusted EPS to be $12.02, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company's previous forecast for full-year adjusted earnings, issued on July 31, excluded any IPR&D expenses beyond the second quarter, it said. AbbVie added that the results for the quarter ended Sept. 30 have not been finalized. "There can be no assurance that our final results will not differ from these preliminary estimates," the company said. It forecast third-quarter adjusted EPS in the range of $1.74 to $1.78, including the impact of the IPR&D expense, much lower than the analysts' estimate of $3.27. Separately, AbbVie said earlier this week it began building a $195 million manufacturing plant in North Chicago, Illinois, expected to produce immunology, oncology and neuroscience drugs and be fully operational by 2027. AbbVie has been leaning on newer immunology drugs Skyrizi and Rinvoq to offset declining sales of its blockbuster arthritis treatment Humira, which began facing biosimilar competition in the U.S. in 2023.
