PLAYERS AT NET STORY: Canada's Victoria Mboko secured her first victory in two months on Tuesday (October 21) with a straight-sets win over former U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu at the Pan Pacific Open. The 19-year-old, ranked world No. 23, defeated her compatriot and doubles partner 6-3 6-3 in their first career meeting to advance to the tournament's second round. The match lasted one hour and 15 minutes. Mboko, who had not won a set or match in the four tournaments since her breakthrough title at the Canadian Open in August, dictated play throughout the encounter. She jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, broke Andreescu to go up 5-3, and served out the set. The second set remained tightly contested until 2-2, when Mboko converted her third break point to take the lead. She sealed the win with another break in the final game and will next face qualifier Eva Lys in the last 16. Mboko, ranked 291st a year ago, has continued her rapid rise in the sport following her maiden career title in Montreal. Also through to the second round is Sofia Kenin, the American needing only 68 minutes to beat Japan's Moyuka Uchijima 6-1 6-3. (Production: Suramya Kaushik)
