By Hanna Rantala LONDON (Reuters) -U.S. rock star Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance on the London Film Festival red carpet on Wednesday, lending his support to the cast and makers of a new biographical movie about his life. "Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere" stars "The Bear" actor Jeremy Allen White as the multiple Grammy winner. But instead of focusing on his high-flying career, it offers a raw portrayal of the person behind the music. Directed and co-written by Scott Cooper, the film is based on the book of the same name by Warren Zanes. It follows a young Springsteen, on the cusp of hitting the big time, struggling with his inner demons and childhood trauma while writing the stark 1982 album "Nebraska". White said the drama, which also delves into Springsteen's fraught relationship with his father, played by Stephen Graham, shows a difficult but decisive period in the rocker's life. "I think at the core of it so much is about that longing for familial connection and the relationship between him and his father," said White. "I think he made decisions during this period in his life that allowed him to live the life that he wanted to live." The film also features "Succession" star Jeremy Strong as Springsteen's supportive, longtime manager Jon Landau. "It's a film obviously about Bruce and about the making of 'Nebraska', but it's about repairing trauma through art and confronting depression and mental health issues," said Strong. "I think it's an incredibly courageous story to tell about someone as mythologised as Bruce, to tell the story of Bruce, the man," Strong said. The movie marks the first time the musician's life has been depicted on the big screen. Springsteen, 76, was closely involved in the production. "Very early on, he listened to me singing his songs. He said, 'you sing very well. You sound like me, not just like me. You're making the songs your own and I want the whole process to feel that way,'" White recalled. "Without that sort of blessing, I don't think I would have been able to do what I did. "He's been very generous in every way. He gave me the guitar I learned to play on. I still have it," White said. The film begins its global cinematic rollout on October 22. (Reporting by Hanna RantalaEditing by Bill Berkrot)

By Hanna Rantala LONDON (Reuters) -Hollywood star Channing Tatum transforms into a gentle and goofy real-life criminal in the comedy drama "Roofman".    Directed and co-written by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Derek Cianfrance, the movie tells the story of U.S. Army veteran and father of three Jeffrey Manchester, who was nicknamed "Roofman" for robbing over 40 McDonald's restaurants by breaking in through the roof.     Described by his friend as the "smartest dumb guy I know", the film sees Manchester being sentenced to 45 years in prison for his crimes and using his wits and observational skills to escape. Instead of going on the run, Manchester manages to hide in a toy store for months and falls for one of its employees, Leigh, played by Kirsten Dunst.     The movie tracks his efforts to evade capture and shows him winning over Leigh's daughters and charming the congregation of the church she frequents with his caring demeanour before eventually getting caught.    "I grew up in Florida and I've known people like Jeff. I was probably like two decisions away from being Jeff myself in certain aspects of my life," Tatum said as he premiered the movie at the London Film Festival on Tuesday.    "Jeff's story is about someone that just can't get out of his own way and I think a lot of us are like that. I think this movie is about empathy and grace," Tatum said.    "Blue Valentine" and "The Light Between Oceans" director Cianfrance said he was intrigued the contradictions in Manchester's behaviour.    "The crazy stuff that happens in the movie, I didn't have to make much up. I just had to tie a few things together for thematics," he said. "I just followed the crazy truth that I learned about. I felt like a kind of an emotional investigator."    Manchester has not been able to see the movie but has felt the ripples of its release behind the bars, Cianfrance said.    "Some really positive things have happened. There's people in Jeff's life who he hasn't talked to in a long time who have started to see the film, and he's been starting to get in contact with them. They're answering his calls now. He called me about a week ago and said,' Derek, if I could give you a hug, I would'," Cianfrance said. "That was, yeah, that was a moment.""Roofman" is out in U.S. theatres now and released globally in October. (Reporting by Hanna Rantala; Editing by Stephen Coates)

By Jasper Ward and Danielle Broadway (Reuters) -Grammy-winning R&B artist D’Angelo, a pioneer of neo-soul music, died at the age of 51 on Tuesday "after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer," his family said in a statement. "We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind," his family said, adding "the shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life." News of his death sent shockwaves across social media, with fans and fellow artists sharing tributes reflecting on the influence he had on their lives and music. American rapper Doja Cat described him as "a true voice of soul and inspiration to many brilliant artists of our generation and generations to come."  D'Angelo, who was born Michael Eugene Archer, launched his career in the 1990s with his debut album "Brown Sugar," which peaked at number four on the Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in 1995. The album's song, "Lady," reached the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100, with songs “Cruisin’" and the title track, "Brown Sugar," gaining critical acclaim. In 2020, Rolling Stone hailed "Brown Sugar" as one of the greatest albums of all time, calling it "a visionary fusion of seventies soul and nineties R&B that paved the way for neo-soul." It ranked the album 183 out of 500. D'Angelo released two other studio albums during his lifetime: "Voodoo" in 2000 and "Black Messiah" in 2014. His sophomore album spent two weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 list. Throughout his career he collaborated with other notable R&B and neo-soul artists such as Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill on her critically-acclaimed 1998 debut album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." D'Angelo also became known as a sex symbol for his 2000 hit, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)," in which he released a popular video that featured him shirtless. It was a title D'Angelo largely rebuffed, instead often saying he preferred to focus on his music. A four-time Grammy Award winner and 14-time nominee, D'Angelo is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest singers of all time.  "Few modern singers so freely display their church roots — but rather than a showboat, his phrasing is often understated, building patiently to torrid screams that could make the stoutest church lady feel positively sinful," Rolling Stone wrote of him in 2023. "And with arrangements that mirror and embellish his vocal melodies, D’Angelo’s subtle phrasing makes his music deeply durable, just like his gorgeous natural instrument." D'Angelo, who had become more reclusive in recent years, died months after the death of singer Angie Stone, with whom he shared a son. He had two other children. (Reuters) -Pop superstar Taylor Swift will release a concert film and a six-part documentary series that chronicles her record-breaking Eras Tour on Disney+ on December 12, the singer announced on Monday. Disney+, which streamed an earlier cut of the Eras Tour film this year, is deepening its collaboration with Swift, leaning into exclusive live music and the pop superstar's large, devoted global fan base to attract new subscribers in a competitive market.  In a post on X, Swift said "The Eras Tour | The Final Show" will feature the full performance from her last tour stop in Vancouver, including the live set for her album "The Tortured Poets Department." Disney+ also will release a six-part docuseries titled "The End of an Era," offering a behind-the-scenes view of what Swift called "the most important and intense chapter" of her career. The series will be released in batches of two episodes on Dec. 12, 19 and 26. The Eras Tour, which began in March 2023 and spanned Swift's two-decade catalog, became the highest-grossing tour in history after generating more than $2 billion in ticket sales. The previous film version, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," which premiered in cinemas last year, is the highest-grossing concert movie ever.  Swift has won 14 Grammys, including a record four album of the year awards. Her latest release, "The Life of a Showgirl," sold more copies than any other album in the modern era during its first week of release, according to Billboard, which cited data from Luminate.
