By Mrinmay Dey (Reuters) -Hollywood's premier talent agency, Creative Artists Agency, said on Thursday OpenAI is exposing artists to "significant risk" through its new AI video-generating tool Sora. The Los Angeles-based CAA, founded in 1975, represents thousands of actors, directors and music artists and athletes. "The question is, does OpenAI and its partner companies believe that humans, writers, artists, actors, directors, producers, musicians, and athletes deserve to be compensated and credited for the work they create?" CAA said in a statement sent to Reuters on Thursday. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside regular business hours. Sora, launched in September as a standalone app initially in the U.S. and Canada, lets users create and share short AI videos that can be spun from copyrighted content and shared to social media-like streams. The app has quickly gained popularity. ChatGPT creator OpenAI will soon introduce controls allowing the owners of content rights to dictate how their characters are used in Sora, and plans to share revenue with those who permit such use, Chief Executive Sam Altman posted on his blog on Friday. But at least one major studio, Disney, has opted out of having its material appear in the app, people familiar with the matter have told Reuters. CAA said control, permission for use, and compensation were "a fundamental right" of creative workers and warned the misuse of new technologies poses "serious and harmful risks" that extended beyond the entertainment and media industries. The agency said it was open to hearing OpenAI's solutions to these issues and was working with intellectual property businesses, creative guilds and unions, as well as legislators and policymakers to address the challenges. By Dawn Chmielewski and Lisa Richwine LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Reuters) -Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel said on Wednesday he believed his comments about the reaction to the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk were "intentionally and maliciously mischaracterized" by critics before his show was suspended. Kimmel drew outrage from conservatives for saying on his September 17 show that President Donald Trump's supporters were desperate to characterize Kirk's accused assassin "as anything other than one of them" and for trying to "score political points" from his murder. "I didn't think there was a big problem," Kimmel said to the initial backlash to his comments. "I just saw it as distortion on the part of some of the right-wing media networks, and I aimed to correct it." Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles, Kimmel added that he thought critics had "intentionally and maliciously mischaracterized" his remarks. ABC parent Walt Disney temporarily pulled "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" off the air after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr said the host misled viewers about Kirk's alleged shooter's affiliation with Trump’s Make America Great Again movement. Carr urged local stations to push back and raised the possibility of the FCC revoking the licenses of local television stations that did not comply. Kimmel said he spent the weekend following his suspension speaking with Disney Entertainment Co-Chair Dana Walden about how to address the situation. "It helped me think everything through, and it helped me just kind of understand where everyone was coming from," Kimmel said. "I can sometimes be reactionary. I can sometimes be aggressive, and I can sometimes be unpleasant. And I think that it helped me really having those days to think about it."     Disney reinstated Kimmel after six days off the air. The host said he told Disney executives "the spirit of what I'm going to say" when he returned to the airwaves "rather than specifically what I was going to say." Upon his return, Kimmel defended political satire against "bullying" from Trump and officials in his administration. Kimmel's voice choked with emotion, moments after he took the stage to a standing ovation, and he said: "It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don't think there's anything funny about it." (Reporting by Dawn Chmielewski and Lisa Richwine; Editing by Kim Coghill)

By Lisa Richwine (Reuters) -Country singer Dolly Parton sought to reassure fans about her health on Wednesday after comments by her sister stoked concern that the Grammy winner was near death. "I ain't dead yet," Parton, 79, said in the caption to an Instagram video. "Do I look sick to you? I'm working hard here," the "9 to 5" singer said with a smile from a set where she was filming commercials for the Grand Ole Opry. She wore black pants and a red top with black fringe. Parton had recently announced she was postponing a series of shows planned for Las Vegas to deal with some unspecified health issues. This week, her sister, Freida Parton, said on social media that she had been "up all night praying" for the singer. She later said she "didn't mean to scare anyone or make it sound so serious." In Wednesday's video, Parton said she had neglected her own health during the illness and death of her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March. She was now working with doctors to address some issues, she said.  "I want you to know I'm OK. I've got some problems … nothing major," she said, adding, "I'm not dying." Parton is a Grammy-winning singer and star of movies including "Steel Magnolias" and "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." She is due to receive an honorary Oscar in November. (Reuters) -Warner Music Group is nearing an agreement with Netflix to create a variety of movies and documentaries based on the label's artists and songs, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Warner Music, the label behind artists such as Bruno Mars and Ed Sheerean, and Netflix did not respond to Reuters' request for comments outside regular business hours. Warner Music CEO Robert Kyncl, speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles, declined to comment on any specific deal. "It makes a lot of sense for us to partner with a company that can bring it alive all around the world," Kyncl said, referring to the catalog of rights to songs by legendary artists. "The stories we have are incredible, and they have not been told." In July, Warner Music and Bain Capital announced a joint venture aimed at acquiring up to $1.2 billion worth of music catalogs. LONDON (Reuters) -Britain's King Charles has said he was considered "rather dotty" for voicing concern about damage to the environment in the past. An upcoming documentary film aims to chart the spread of views once seen as eccentric, and bring them to new audiences. The 76-year-old monarch first spoke of the dangers of "indestructible plastic containers" and the pollution from "endless cars and aeroplanes" in the early 1970s, well before protecting the planet became a mainstream topic. "Remarkably few people around the world know the full depth of The King’s lifelong battle to bring nature and humanity into harmony," the film's director Nicolas Brown said in a statement. "Finding Harmony: A King's Vision" will explore the history of Charles' belief that nature is at the core of human wellbeing and emphasise the urgent need to protect it. The film is due to be released early next year, a counterweight to scepticism about environmental issues voiced by U.S. President Donald Trump. The film will feature Charles' projects at his Highgrove residence and Dumfries House – part of his charity, The King's Foundation – and further afield in India and Guyana. "Nature is our sustainer – we are a part of Nature. Therefore, what we do to her, we do to ourselves," Charles said in the statement from the charity. His environmental campaigning has already inspired both his sons. Heir to the throne Prince William set up the Earthshot charity, which offers multi-million pound prizes to help fund environmental technologies, while his younger son Prince Harry champions conservation and wildlife causes. The film will be available on Amazon's Prime Video, marking the latest move by the royal family to embrace global media platforms. Earlier in October, William appeared on an Apple TV show, while Harry, who is no longer a working royal, has a contract with Netflix. (Reporting by Sarah Young; editing by Philippa Fletcher)

PARIS (Reuters) -Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy kicked off his design reboot of the century-old French fashion house on Monday with an evening runway show featuring dropped waists and long, button-up shirts, capping months of mounting suspense. Blazy, 41, snagged fashion's most coveted job in December. He is one of dozens of new designers recruited by labels seeking to spark the interest of inflation-weary shoppers. Blazy's debut at the Grand Palais in Paris drew swarms of guests decked out in the brand's signature tweed, the famous interlocking C logo visible on heels, jewellery and handbags. Inside, gigantic, glowing planets hovered in the vast glass-and-steel exposition hall.  Models marched down the slick, black runway, parading low-waisted skirts, silk tops and elongated twin sets with frayed edges. Red carpet looks included full skirts with piles of colorful feathers, dresses with extra flounce and glittering knitwear. Along with Chanel's classic-look leather handbags, models also paraded what the brand called "crushed" versions in gold and silver with exposed seams and open flaps. At the end of the show, the audience of over 2,000 gave a standing ovation as Blazy ran out for his bow. Blazy, who joined Chanel from Kering-owned Bottega Veneta, follows long-time Virginie Viard who left in June last year after a long collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld, the creative force behind the modern revival of Chanel until he died in 2019. Paris Fashion Week, which featured Saint Laurent, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Balenciaga, finishes on Tuesday, concluding a month of shows in New York, London and Milan.
