By Abhirup Roy (Reuters) -Tesla is expected to unveil on Tuesday a more affordable version of its best-selling Model Y SUV, as the electric vehicle maker seeks to reverse falling sales and waning market share amid rising global competition. Chief Executive Elon Musk for years has promised mass market vehicles, though last year he canceled plans to build an all-new $25,000 EV, Reuters first reported. The car expected this week is an "affordable" vehicle based on current manufacturing and design platforms. Tesla posted two clips on X over the weekend, igniting excitement among Tesla fans. One video shows headlights peering out of the dark and another shows what looks like a wheel spinning for a few seconds, followed by "10/7", the U.S. format for the date October 7. Neither Tesla nor influencers have indicated that an in-person event is in the works, in contrast to previous major Tesla launches. Still, analysts, investors and fans expect the company to make some kind of announcement. Major questions include the car's price, driving range and efforts to strip down costs. Late last year, Musk said the vehicle would be priced below the "key threshold" of $30,000 including U.S. EV tax credits. In the United States, prices effectively rose by $7,500 at the end of last month, when the credit ended. That helped goose quarterly sales to a record, but expectations are that they will slow down for the rest of the year, unless the affordable car comes to the rescue. "The desire to buy the car is very high. (It's) just (that) people don't have enough money in the bank account to buy it," Musk said in July during Tesla's second-quarter earnings call. "So the more affordable we can make the car, the better." Musk initially promised that production of the vehicle would start by the end of June. But Tesla only made what it called "first builds" of the car, it said in July, adding that it would be available for customers sometime in the last three months of the year. Tesla has already been grappling with slowing sales of its aging lineup as competition has grown rapidly, especially in China and Europe, where Musk's far-right political views also have undermined brand loyalty. Earlier this year, Tesla launched a refreshed version of the Model Y with improvements including new light bars and a rear touchscreen. Musk has been pivoting the company toward artificial intelligence, focusing on robotaxis and humanoid robots. Tesla has said it will launch more affordable vehicles in its lineup but has not provided details. Sources have told Reuters the EV maker also plans to roll out a stripped-down version of its Model 3 midsize sedan. Affordable cars will also be key to Tesla delivering 20 million vehicles over the next decade – one of the several operational and valuation milestones set by the company's board as part of its proposed $1 trillion pay package for Musk. By Jaspreet Singh (Reuters) -Dell on Tuesday nearly doubled its annual profit growth target for the next four years, betting on robust demand for its servers that power artificial intelligence workloads. The company, whose customers include Elon Musk's AI startup xAI and CoreWeave, lifted its expectations for annual growth in adjusted earnings per share to at least 15% from around 8%. Dell also said it expects compounded annual revenue growth between 7% and 9% for the next four years, up from its prior view of 3% to 4%. Insatiable demand for servers that provide the computing power needed to run services such as ChatGPT has turned Dell into one of the biggest winners of the generative AI boom. Its strong profit growth expectation may also ease investor concerns about the margin hit from competition in AI servers and the high costs of building the products. "Dell has a volume advantage due to its scale, established supply chain, and relationships with major buyers, compared to rivals like Super Micro," Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne said. Dell also reiterated its third-quarter and annual forecasts. It had raised its expectation for AI server shipments in August to $20 billion for fiscal 2026. "Customers are hungry for AI and the compute, storage and networking we provide to deploy intelligence at scale," CEO Michael Dell said, adding that the company was in the early stages of AI adoption despite two years of progress. Dell expects long-term compounded annual revenue growth of 11% to 14% for the infrastructure solutions group – home to its storage, software and server offerings. That compares with its earlier expectations of 6% to 8%. The company continues to expect revenue growth of 2% to 3% for its client solutions group, which includes personal computers. Strong competition in the consumer market has hit the business in recent years, even as Dell keeps a strong position among enterprise clients. When it comes to which diet is good for our health, the answer always has to be: Mediterranean cuisine. Experts explain why this is the case, how you can bring the Mediterranean diet into your everyday cooking – and, most imporantly, whether pizza is still okay. Berlin (dpa) – Good food is one thing people often associate with holidaying in Italy or Greece. It not only tastes good – a major understatement, many would say – but is good for you too: The Mediterranean diet is widely recognized as one of the healthiest eating patterns in the world.  Bringing its benefits to your table doesn't mean tucking into gnocchi in cream sauce, pizza or tiramisu though. They're not really part of the diet. Here's what you should know: What does the Mediterranean diet consist of? It basically comprises the foods typically eaten mainly in southern Italy and Greece in the 1950s and -60s. In other words, cuisine characterized by fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, whole-grain products, legumes, nuts and seeds, and olive oil. Meat, bread and sweets play a subordinate role. But there's more to the Mediterranean eating style than what's on your plate. "Nurturing the soul, creating a pleasant atmosphere, and the conviviality of shared meals are also involved and even part of the definition," says nutritional medicine specialist Dr Stephan Bischoff, professor at the University of Hohenheim in Germany. How healthy is the Mediterranean diet?  If you ask Bischoff, who's been doing research on the Mediterranean diet for many years, he sings its praises: "Its effects are so significant that no pill I know of can come even close in terms of preventing health problems," he says. Numerous studies show that a Mediterranean diet can promote health, lengthen life and protect against diseases. A case in point: It can prevent, or reduce the progression of, arteriosclerosis [hardening of the arteries]. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) also gives a positive assessment of the Mediterranean diet. "It's indeed very healthy and can be recommended as standard fare – which we do," says DGE spokeswoman Silke Restemeyer. In fact, traditional Mediterranean cuisine and the DGE's recommendations are nearly a perfect match, focusing on plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole-grain products. Animal-source foods are complementary, fish being preferred to meat. What makes the Mediterranean diet so healthy? There isn't a single decisive factor, Bischoff says. "It's probably a combination of various elements." Healthy fats lower cholesterol levels and thereby the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish, along with antioxidants from fruit and vegetables, support brain health, slow ageing and reduce chronic inflammation associated with cancer, arthritis and heart disease. High-fibre foods such as whole-grain products, legumes and vegetables are another important element. They provide food for beneficial microorganisms in the intestines, which has a positive effect on the immune system and digestion. Can meat be part of a Mediterranean diet? "The eating pattern doesn't really exclude anything," remarks Bischoff. "You can also eat meat – just not every day in large quantities." Some types of meat are quite popular in the Mediterranean basin," he notes, "and there's nothing wrong with a piece of beef or lamb on occasion." It's important – and not just for reasons of animal welfare – that the animals be able to move around and don't put on too much fat, he says. "Meat then can definitely be a component of a healthy diet." You should largely refrain from eating sausage and highly processed foods in general though, "which aren't a part of the Mediterranean diet at all." They often contain a lot of salt and sugar. What if you don't like olive oil? Olive oil is an important element in the Mediterranean diet. If you don't like it, however, the DGE recommends – as a regional alternative – rapeseed oil, "in part because it's rich in heart-healthy, monounsaturated omega-3 fatty acids," says Restemeyer. She recommends using refined olive or rapeseed oil for cooking, frying and baking, and those cold-pressed oils for salads. The latter, Restemeyer says, "is usually considerably more expensive and too good for browning, since it doesn't add flavour." What about pizza and pasta? They're not off limits in the Mediterranean diet either. "But if you constantly choose foods like these, you're not exactly doing your health a favour," says Restemeyer. When you do eat them though, she recommends the wholegrain variety. The reason is that the carbohydrates in white flour products can be rapidly broken down by the body into glucose [sugar], which is absorbed into the bloodstream. But you don't feel full for long and are hungry again. You can avoid this by choosing pasta and pizza bases using wholegrain flour and served with plenty of vegetables. What exactly does a Mediterranean-style meals look like? In a book on the Mediterranean diet that Bischoff co-authored, there's an example of a Med-meal day: amaranth porridge with pears and blueberries for breakfast, zucchini noodles with shrimp and walnut pesto for lunch, and rice salad with smoked mackerel for dinner. You can start by making individual meals Mediterranean-style. For breakfast, Restemeyer suggests plain yogurt with fresh berries, or scrambled eggs with fresh herbs and tomatoes. She advises against croissants. "Although they originally come from France, they're not typical Mediterranean fare since they contain a lot of butter and are very high in calories." Your lunch and dinner selections can depend on your daily routine, Restemeyer says. For example, for lunch you could have lentil soup with garlic, onions, carrots and tomatoes, and for dinner a slice of whole-grain bread along with uncooked vegetarian fare or a small salad. Or, if you ate a Greek salad with tomatoes, olives, cucumbers and feta cheese in the canteen during your lunch break, for dinner you could have a portion of fish with lemon and vegetables. As for between-meal snacks, a handful of nuts are a good choice. Besides healthy fats, they provide plenty of dietary fibre and leave you feeling full for a long time, in contrast to chocolate. How can you permanently adopt a Mediterranean diet? "You should try to do it gradually," says Bischoff. "Take your time, and don't put too much pressure on yourself." A first step could be cutting out sweetened drinks. Once you've managed that, you can take further steps. Several examples: Use olive or rapeseed oil instead of butter, substitute vegetable spread for sliced sausage, grill fish instead of red meat, and season with fresh herbs instead of salt. "Basically, you should increase the proportion of vegetarian foods in your diet and successively reduce the amount of animal-source ones," says Restemeyer. "And try more recipes with vegetables, fruit, fish and whole grains." The following information is not intended for publication dpa/tmn ksp yyzz a3 bzl rid nhr ob

By Jan Strupczewski BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Euro zone finance ministers will discuss on Thursday how they can support the development of euro-denominated stablecoins so as not to leave the rapidly growing market only to the United States, a senior euro zone official said. Stablecoins are digital tokens that have stable value against a regular currency and are backed by reserves like the currency itself or other assets. The stablecoin market is now around $300 billion, but is forecast to grow tenfold over the next decade, the official said. Almost all stablecoins now are denominated in U.S. dollars and U.S. legislation called the Genius Act from July aims to keep that dominance by requiring stablecoin issuers to base them on U.S. dollars or U.S. treasuries. "So the discussion is basically how should we position ourselves towards all this," said the official, who has taken part in the preparations for the ministerial meeting. Last month, a consortium of nine European banks, including heavyweights ING and UniCredit launched a euro-denominated stablecoin to counter U.S. digital market dominance. But euro stablecoins still account only for around $620 million out of the $300 billion total issuance. Europe has its own legislation on stablecoins, called Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), and the ministers will discuss if it needs to be changed to help create euro-denominated stablecoins. "(The ministers will discuss) whether we have got the right balance between risk mitigation and promoting financial innovations, whether we should be more supportive, if there are some regulatory issues that we need to fix to better nurture the development of high quality European stable points and also discuss how all this links together with the digital euro," the official said. "This is very much an early engagement. It is mainly about putting this issue in the hands of finance ministers, getting their attention, first reactions, and we will then see where it takes us later," the official said. Los Angeles (dpa) – Over the past decade, the use of inhalers has generated the same amount of emissions in the US as around half a million petrol or diesel cars, according to researchers who describe much of this everyday asthma medication as a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. As governments around the world seek ways to drive down the emissions causing climate change, a team at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is calling for health care systems to shift away from common inhalers with high emissions. "Inhalers add to the growing carbon footprint of the US health care system," said William Feldman, a pulmonologist and health services researcher at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. Metered-dose inhalers are "the most harmful" as they contain propellants similar to those used in aerosol sprays, according to the team, which said some 1.6 billion inhalers were dispensed in the US between 2014 and 2024. "Other types of inhalers, which include dry inhalers and soft powder mist inhalers, are less harmful to the environment as they deliver medication to the lungs without the need for propellants," the researchers said. Published by the American Medical Association, the study was based in part on inhaler prescription data, according to the researchers. The team's estimates for emissions were generated by using what they said were validated academic studies and "analyzed by drug type, device type, propellant type, therapeutic class, branded status, manufacturer, payer and pharmacy benefit manager." By Stephen Nellis SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Gaps in efforts by the U.S. and allies to restrict China's ability to manufacture advanced computing chips have allowed China to buy nearly $40 billion of sophisticated chipmaking gear, according to a bipartisan investigation by U.S. lawmakers. U.S. Democratic and Republican administrations have tried to restrict China's ability to make microchips, viewing the industry as crucial for national security. But inconsistencies in rules issued by the United States, Japan and the Netherlands have led to non-U.S. toolmakers selling to some Chinese firms that U.S. companies could not, according to a report by the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on China seen by Reuters. The committee called for broader bans by the group of allies on chipmaking tool sales to China, rather than narrower bans of specific Chinese chipmakers.  Chinese firms last year bought $38 billion in equipment from five top semiconductor manufacturing equipment suppliers, without breaking the law, a 66% increase from 2022, when many of the tool export restrictions were introduced. It also accounted for nearly 39% of the aggregate sales of Applied Materials, Lam Research, KLA, ASML and Tokyo Electron, the report found. The U.S., citing national security concerns, is targeting China's ability to make state-of-the-art chips because they are crucial to fields such as AI and military modernization. The two economic superpowers are also vying to sell advanced technology such as AI data centers to other nations. "These are the sales that made China increasingly competitive in the manufacture of a wide range of semiconductors, with profound implications for human rights and democratic values around the world," the report said. In an interview, Mark Dougherty, president of Tokyo Electron's U.S. unit, said the industry's China sales have started to decline this year, in part due to new regulations and welcomed more coordination between the U.S. and Japanese governments. "I think it’s clear, from a U.S. perspective, there’s an outcome that is still desired that has not yet been achieved," Dougherty told Reuters. Applied and Lam did not respond to a request for comment. ASML and KLA said they could not comment until seeing the report in full. The committee said that the toolmakers cooperated with the committee on the report and were informed of its findings. Three Chinese firms that have become major customers of toolmakers – SwaySure Technology Co, Shenzhen Pengxinxu Technology Co and SiEn (Qingdao) Integrated Circuits Co – are of particular security concern. They were flagged last year by the congressional committee's leaders, Chairman John Moolenaar, a Michigan Republican, and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Illinois Democrat, in a letter to the Commerce Department alleging ties to a secret network aiding Huawei Technologies, and U.S. officials barred exports to them in December.  The report recommended tighter coordination among allies and broader restrictions, including on components China could use to build its own chipmaking tools. “China is attempting to rewrite the entire supply chain," said Craig Singleton, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a think tank. "What used to be niche tool segments are now battlegrounds." (Reporting by Stephen Nellis in San FranciscoEditing by Shri Navaratnam)
