By Giselda Vagnoni ROME (Reuters) -A group of Italian families has filed a lawsuit against Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, accusing the platforms of failing to enforce age restrictions and using addictive features that harm children's mental health. The case asks a Milan court to require the platforms to adopt stronger age-verification systems for users under 14, in line with Italian law. It also seeks to make Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram and TikTok remove potentially manipulative algorithms and provide transparent information on the possible harms of overuse. LAWSUIT TO BE HEARD NEXT YEAR The action, filed by law firm Ambrosio & Commodo together with the Italian Parents' Movement (MOIGE), is scheduled to be heard by the Milan court's business chamber from February 2026. "It's too easy for children to bypass the age ban. This action is about stopping conduct that is harmful to a large number of individuals," said lawyer Renato Ambrosio in a statement sent to Reuters late on Monday.  A Meta spokesperson said the company was committed to keeping young people safe online and that "teen safety should be an industry-wide priority". "With Teen Accounts we provide default protections for teens limiting who can contact them, the content they can see, and how much time they spend on Facebook and Instagram. We also have measures in place to prevent teens from lying about their age," the spokesperson added. TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment. GLOBAL SCRUTINY OF SOCIAL MEDIA SAFETY Several countries, including Australia and some in Europe, have taken or are considering measures to curb social media use among minors. Facebook, Instagram and TikTok also face dozens of lawsuits in the U.S. accusing them of enticing and addicting millions of children to their platforms. In Italy, the plaintiffs estimate that more than three million of the 90 million Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok accounts are used by children under 14.  They argue that social media use among minors can lead to health issues including eating disorders, sleep deprivation, depression, and impaired academic performance. The Turin-based law firm and MOIGE said they were also preparing a subsequent class action lawsuit, open to parents whose children have allegedly been harmed by using social media. By Stephen Nellis SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Qualcomm on Tuesday said it has acquired Arduino, an Italian not-for-profit firm that makes hardware and software for developing prototypes of robots and other electronic gadgets. San Diego-based Qualcomm is a major supplier of chips at the heart of mobile phones but has been expanding into other fields such as connected vehicles, wireless earphones, laptop computers and industrial machines. With the Arduino deal, it will acquire an open-source platform with more than 33 million developers. The companies did not disclose the price of the deal. Qualcomm said Arduino "will retain its independent brand, tools and mission." Arduino is widely used by high-school and university students worldwide to learn how to build and program electronic devices. It is also used by professional engineers to develop prototypes quickly. Its software and hardware is compatible with chips from a range of providers beyond Qualcomm. The two firms said they will continue to support chips from other makers. Qualcomm also said it will introduce an Arduino development board powered by one of its "Dragonwing" processing chips that will be suitable for devices such as robots that need computational power similar to a computer or phone along with real-time control over wings, wheels or other robotic elements. The chipmaker said it will be the first board to work with a new coding tool called "AppLab" aimed at helping Arduino developers bridge the gap between coding languages used in robots and those used in more complex artificial intelligence systems. (Reuters) -Dell raised its long-term revenue and profit growth forecasts on Tuesday, signaling robust demand for its servers that power artificial intelligence workloads. Its shares surged 7% in premarket trading after the company said it expects compounded annual revenue growth between 7% and 9%, up from its prior view of 3% to 4%. It also nearly doubled its expectations for annual growth in adjusted earnings per share to at least 15% from 8%, betting on the insatiable demand for computing power needed to run generative AI products such as ChatGPT. "Customers are hungry for AI and the compute, storage and networking we provide to deploy intelligence at scale," CEO Michael Dell said in a statement. Dell, whose customers include Elon Musk's AI startup xAI and CoreWeave, reiterated its third-quarter and annual forecasts. It had raised its expectations for AI server shipments in August to $20 billion in fiscal 2026. A strong PC refresh cycle is expected after Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 next week, as users and companies seek to maintain security and access to the latest features, benefiting PC makers such as HP and Dell. While the booming demand for AI severs has boosted Dell's revenue, competition and higher costs of producing those products have pressured its margins, drawing investor concern. By Jaspreet Kalra and Ashwin Manikandan MUMBAI (Reuters) -India will allow users to approve payments made through popular domestic payments network, the Unified Payments Interface, using facial recognition and fingerprints starting October 8, three sources directly familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Authentications will be done using biometric data stored under the Government of India's unique identification system – Aadhar, one of the sources said. The move follows recent guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India permitting alternative methods of authentication and will mark a departure from the current system, which requires a numeric PIN for payment authentication. The National Payments Corporation of India, which operates UPI, plans to showcase this new biometric feature at the ongoing Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai, the sources said on condition of anonymity as they are not authorised to speak to the media. NPCI did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment. (Reporting by Jaspreet Kalra and Ashwin Manikandan; Editing by Sumana Nandy)
