By Ann Saphir (Reuters) -St. Louis Federal Reserve President Alberto Musalem on Friday said he sees possible room for one more interest rate cut to shore up the labor market, but urged caution because inflation remains "materially" above the U.S. central bank's 2% target. "I am open-minded about a potential further reduction in interest rates to provide further insurance against labor market weakening," Musalem said at the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce in Missouri. But, he added, "I believe that we have to tread with caution because there's limited room for further easing before monetary policy could become overly accommodative, and I believe that monetary policy should continue to lean against persistence in inflation." Trading in interest-rate futures contracts reflects heavy bets that the Fed will follow its quarter-percentage-point rate cut last month with same-sized reductions at its October 28-29 and December 9-10 meetings. And while some Fed policymakers, including the influential New York Fed chief John Williams, have leaned into that expectation, Musalem's comments suggest he may not be sold on the idea. Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid, another of the Fed's 12 voting rate-setters this year, likewise has emphasized inflation concerns. Both had joined the 11-1 majority at the Fed approving the Fed's quarter-percentage-point rate cut last month. Musalem on Thursday said he expects U.S. economic growth to be healthy in the fourth quarter and to run at or a bit above its long-run potential next year, bolstered by robust consumer spending thanks in part to lower interest rates. But, he said, some groups like Hispanics are slowing their spending, and lower- and middle-income households are only maintaining their spending through borrowing. "Their real incomes, their wages adjusted for inflation, haven't been growing at a rate that allows them to consume comfortably without taking on additional credit," he said, attributing the insight to a recent conversation with community development practitioners. "That drove home for me that it's really important for us to achieve our 2% price stability or inflation goal to support consumption." He said he feels the Trump administration's tariffs are only responsible for about 10% of the current rate of inflation, and that he expects their effect to dissipate by the middle of 2026, allowing inflation to head back to the Fed's 2% target. Musalem expects the labor market "to continue to soften some going forward in an orderly way, with the supply and demand both muted." But that's only a baseline, he said, and there are risks that inflation could be more persistent, or that the labor market could weaken more than expected – one reason that he does not rule out some more "insurance" in the form of another reduction in borrowing costs. Still, he said, the Fed should be careful, especially in light of the stock market rally in recent months. "I now perceive monetary policy as somewhere between modestly restrictive and neutral, and I see, when I look out the window, financial conditions and financing conditions which are very accommodative of the growing economy," he said. On Monday, Senate Republicans disclosed a 2023 document that showed the FBI obtained phone data known as "toll records" from senators' phones, including Blackburn, tied to the U.S. Justice Department's investigation of the riot. She wants the telecom companies to answer questions including whether they provided "the cell phone records of their personal devices, their official government devices, or both?" Separately, Republican Senator Bill Hagerty — who is among the eight lawmakers whose information was seized — said he had written to Verizon seeking answers about the disclosure of his phone records. Verizon on Friday told Reuters it had provided the requested customer information and call records. "Federal law requires companies like Verizon to respond to grand jury subpoenas," Verizon said. * Stocks end week on dour note ahead of 3rd anniversary of bull market * JPMorgan, Goldman among bank reports due in coming week * S&P 500 earnings expected to rise nearly 9% in Q3 (Recasts for Friday's market declines, updates with confirmation of CPI release date, fresh analyst comments) By Lewis Krauskopf NEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters) – Investors will look to major banks' quarterly earnings reports in the coming week to help gauge the U.S. economy's health as the federal government shutdown has interrupted the flow of new data. Major U.S. equity indexes slumped on Friday, stalling the market's momentum, after comments from President Donald Trump ratcheted up trade tensions with China. Stocks ended the week on a dour note just before the benchmark S&P 500 is set to mark the third anniversary of the start of its current bull market run on Sunday. Markets had been overbought and due for some volatility, said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at Manulife John Hancock Investments. "At the end of the day, it's going to come back to the economy," Miskin said. "It's going to come back to corporate profits, and earnings season is right around the corner." With the U.S. stock market's valuation around its highest level in five years and some concerns about over-inflated investor enthusiasm for technology and artificial intelligence, a strong third-quarter earnings season will be critical for equities to maintain their momentum. Despite Friday's sharp decline, the S&P 500 remains up over 11% year-to-date and within roughly 3% of its all-time high. "The market just keeps grinding higher," said Garrett Melson, portfolio strategist at Natixis Investment Managers Solutions. "The key underpinning of that is stronger earnings outlooks. … When you look at the fundamentals, things continue to look good." The record-breaking run for U.S. stock indexes has been accompanied by recent strong gains for other assets, including gold, silver and bitcoin. Several high-profile officials have recently made cautious comments about markets, including Kristalina Georgieva, head of the International Monetary Fund, and JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon. JPMorgan is among the major banks kicking off the earnings season when it reports on Tuesday, along with Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are due on Wednesday. Recent weak labor market data has raised concerns about growth and prompted the Federal Reserve to restart interest rate cuts. "Banks are a window into the U.S. economy," said Irene Tunkel, chief U.S. equity strategist at BCA Research. "If we see that consumers are still spending, if we see that demand for loans is improving, then I will start to think that perhaps we're not really edging towards contraction." Other companies due to report next week include healthcare company Johnson & Johnson and asset manager BlackRock . S&P 500 companies overall are expected to have increased earnings by 8.8% in the third quarter from a year earlier, according to LSEG IBES. "A lot of the bullishness is built around the expected earnings growth," said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services. "If we start to see cracks in that, that would not be good for the market in general." Attention also will be on Washington to see if Republican and Democratic lawmakers break an impasse and end a government shutdown that began on October 1. Markets have largely shrugged off the shutdown so far, but investors have warned that risks to the economy will increase the longer it goes on, while it is already hamstringing U.S. travel. Another issue for investors is the interrupted publication of key economic reports by government agencies. The monthly employment report, due on October 3, already has been delayed. Investors have been concerned that the shutdown also could affect next week's data, including releases related to inflation and retail sales. The monthly consumer price index report, which is closely watched for inflation trends, will be published on October 24, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday, after the CPI report was originally scheduled for this coming Wednesday. While the CPI report will allow the Social Security Administration to meet deadlines necessary for payment of benefits, the BLS said no other releases will be rescheduled or produced until regular government services resume. If the shutdown drags on through next week, there will be an impact on the October employment report when it is released, "which would make the numbers harder to interpret," Michael Pearce, deputy chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, said in a note on Friday. "With much of the regular economic data unavailable during the shutdown," Pearce wrote, "the data fog is thickening." By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn wants the CEOs of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile to disclose whether they received or objected to subpoenas for phone data from eight U.S. senators related to a probe of the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, according to letters seen by Reuters on Friday. On Monday, Senate Republicans disclosed a 2023 document that showed the FBI obtained phone data known as "toll records" from senators' phones, including Blackburn, tied to the U.S. Justice Department's investigation of the riot. She wants the telecom companies to answer questions including whether they provided "the cell phone records of their personal devices, their official government devices, or both?" Separately, Republican Senator Bill Hagerty — who is among the eight lawmakers whose information was seized — said he had written to Verizon seeking answers about the disclosure of his phone records. Verizon on Friday told Reuters it had provided the requested customer information and call records. "Federal law requires companies like Verizon to respond to grand jury subpoenas," Verizon said. "We received a valid subpoena and a court order to keep it confidential. We weren't told why the information was requested or what the investigation was about." Blackburn said all three companies got subpoenas for phone records related to "time, recipient, duration, and location of calls placed on our devices from January 4, 2021, to January 7, 2021." The records were part of special prosecutor Jack Smith's investigation into President Donald Trump’s effort to overturn his loss of the 2020 election to his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden. Trump was charged in the Capitol assault but the case did not go to trial, having been delayed and buffeted by a series of legal challenges. Smith dropped the case after Trump won the 2024 election against Biden's Vice President Kamala Harris. Smith cited a longstanding Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president, but issued a report saying the evidence he gathered would have been enough to convict Trump at trial. Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr said Friday in an interview he had previously raised concerns about prior disclosures of lawmaker records.
